Why does Google have to advertise on TV in India for its app, despite having the monopoly on search engines?

Even though this is extremely negative perspective, it projects the clear picture (answer) of ‘why’.Before going in to details, I would like to mention that, in my opinion, Google is not marketing specifically for its apps, but just increasing the visibility of their products. Since smartphone market is the hot thing right now, they chose the medium to better connect with audience.Google being super famous, there is no denying that most people would be knowing about the company. However, knowing about google and knowing about what it does (offer) are different things. People in far rural areas or people who are less educated don’t know how to operate Internet, how they can use it for betterment of their lives and how they could solve many of their problems just using an Internet. Despite being 2nd largest market of smartphone (With 220mn users, India is now world’s second-biggest smartphone market), Only 17% Indians own smartphones: survey. Which leaves a rather bigger scope in terms of potential user base.TV has more outreach to the houses, (Television in India: India now has over 167 million households (out of 234 million) with television sets), which roughly translates to 71% contrary to 17% for mobile users, (The obvious reason being 1 phone has access to 1 person while 1 tv has access to whole family of 6 on an average). Which makes it an excellent platform for marketing AND education. If one can educate potential users about usage of his product, obviously he has chance to have more users in future. This is what Google and IDEA are doing.

Has Google ever advertised its search engine?

Yes! It actually has!Though this wasn’t right after it launched and was put out after the google search engine was already mainstream and had become the worlds primary search engine. Even so, this has to be one of the greatest ads of all time, and the advertisement, being as subtle as it with the beautiful story it conveys, still gets the point across, of google being an engine for change.And here’s the ad itself -Cheers! :)

Google itself is the advertiser. How do you think an advertiser advertise themselves. They do what they are good at. They created their search engine to be self learning. When there was no Google and people used Internet Explorer, the default search engine was Bing , created by microsoft. I was using them when I started out with Internet using dial Up connection in India. One day, under bing search , there came google search result, a link refering to google search engine. And when I tried that, it was really smooth and gets what we needed exactly. Now anyone who knows to search in google, can find anything on the web. And I'd say google search became more and much popular upon the introduction of Google Chrome, to replace Internet Explorer on a massive scale and integrating google search into address bar

Why has Google started advertising?

Google does not have viral reach like Facebook which will automatically bring in the new Internet users in developing countries on their platform. Search is a great and simple way to create a brand impression while penetrating new market. It is just competition and smart marketing stratgey to bring in more users, create awareness about the many ways in which you can use google and trying to be ahead in internet race.
