Has There Ever Been A Female Gymnast Who Has Won The All Around And All 4 Events Finals

Why are the women's gymnastic event on nbc so late?

That may be true about Live events, but I bet NBC has a lot to say about when these events happen for their scheduling. I think the gymnastics have been on so late because NBC knows it is of greater interest to audiences, and they will stay up later.

My husband and I have been trying to stay up late enough for the gymnastics all week, but keep conking out. I finally caught the women's finals till 1:15 a.m. and now I am dead today. I think NBC's decision in this area was poor and it is really runing our enjoyment of the olympics this year. I really don't care about beach volleyball!!!

Also I am on the East coast and the gymnastics have come on at 11 pm here - so they must be lagging the airing of the olympics for the West coast if you are seeing them at 11 pm too. That is weird b/c I thought at least you all were seeing them at a more reasonable hour. I just found a link showing west coast airings for the olympics are not live - which supports my points that NBC puts gymnastics on later on purpose - b/c you guys could see it a better time if they truly showed it live for West!

*see how tired and grouchhy I am?*

What is the reason to have a "two per country" rule in Olympic women's gymnastics?

The main reason is to prevent one country from sweeping all the awards. If the strongest contenders are all from the same country, the podium will look like awarding athletes from one particular country, which is different from one of the Olympic’s goals: involving athletes of different nationalities.Yes, this rule sounds stupid if you’re looking for building the stage for the best to compete. Even if you’re one of the best, you may still be ruled out from the final due to regulations, just because you’re not the best two competitors in your own country (that doesn’t mean you’re not a qualified athlete). To athletes, this is heartbreaking.

US Women's Gymnastics (Olympics)?

USA Women's Gymnastics Team is favored to win the gold, mostly because they were the Gold Medalists in the World Championships 2011 (the most recent Worlds).

The gold medal winning team of 2011 was comprised of : Gabby Douglas, McKayla Maroney, Alexandra Raisman, Alicia Sacramone, Sabrina Vega, Jordyn Weiber. Alicia Sacramone did not compete due to an injury during training after the team left the USA and were in Tokyo.**

The 2012 Olympic Team is comprised of most of the same gymnasts: Douglas, Maroney, Raisman, and Weiber. Vega, most unfortunately, has not been competing as well during the Trials, and did not make the team. Kyla Ross was chosen as the fifth member***, probably because she has decent uneven bars (the USA's weakest even this quad) and because she is an all-around competitor.

The Russian Team is also favored, they were 2nd to the USA at the 2011 Worlds. (The team score was USA 179.411 to Russia 175.329). However, the Russians were without one of their two best competitors, Aliya Mustafina (Victoria Komova is the other star who did compete) who was injured at the time. Both stars have made the team for Russia for the Olympics.

Note that the USA had no falls during any of the routines performed during both Team Qualifications and Team finals for 2011 World Championships. That was a huge contribution to their securing the gold medal. Although they are favored to win the gold medal, it is theirs to lose if there are any falls during the Olympic Team Finals.

It is surely going to be an exciting competition. :)

** On Alicia Sacramone's 2011 injury: the USA could have called up one of the alternates at the World Championships, but they opted to compete with 5 gymnasts although they were allowed 6 gymnasts if they had wanted.
*** The FIG (governing body of gymnastics) changed the rules: Team size is now 5 gymnasts for 2012 Olympics, it had been 6 gymnasts at 2011 Worlds.

Olympics Gymnastics Laurie Hernandez?

What was it she was not select for. The announcers said Marta Karoly had to choose who to ..... And Laurie was not chosen Laurie said she cried a little but she understood..... What was it she want chosen for I didn't understand?

Why does Nastia Liukin's dad stand underneath the uneven bars?

He's her coach and her spotter. Yes, he's allowed to be there.

He only actually runs under the bars when she's warming up. During her actual event, he stands close by so he can catch her during her risky maneuvers.

I think the reason you see him, but don't see the other coaches/spotters, is because the camera focuses on him, since he is her dad. The other gymnasts have their coaches right there, too.

During the upcoming event finals, watch more closely. You'll see that every gymnast has a spotter standing by to break a gyymnast's fall if necessary.

OMG! Chung Fei WAYYYYYY overscored on Women's Vault FInal!!???

Ok, firstly, there were two vaults. Both done the first vault just fine.
It was the second there was a landing difficulty, and the difference between the difficulty levels is why Sacramone didn't do so well.

The A Score is difficulty, the B score is Execution. A doesn't change, B can be deducted from for mistakes. By starting with a low A score, you can come close to ensuring a very good B score, but there is less total points you can get. For example, on Vault 2, the most Sacramone could get was 15.8, while without a problem, Cheng Fei could have gotten 16.5. Sacramone was playing it safe. What really killed it for Sacramone is the 0.2 start she gave Cheng Fei on the first vault. The average between Sacramones two "safe" vaults and Chengs two harder vaults - even with a fall - only worth 0.8 deduction, was always going to be bigger.

You can see in there scores, Cheng got her Execution score flogged on her second vault. But there were 2, and she nailed the first one and that ended Sacramones days by 0.03 points.

Sacramone:
Vault 1: A: 6.30 B: 9.450 - Total: 15.750
Vault 2: A: 5.80 B: 9.525 - Total: 15.325
Final score : 15.537

Cheng Fei:
Vault 1: A: 6.50 B: 9.575 - Total: 16.075
Vault 2: A: 6.50 B: 8.550 - Total: 15.050
Final Score: 15.567
