Have I Damaged My 5th Metacarpal

Fracture to 2nd metacarpal?

I don't believe that it is broken but suffering from a strong bone bruise. That will cause swelling and intense pain that will last for days. To be sure an x-ray will confirm the presence or absence of a fracture. If it is fractured it will be splinted. Try dipping your hand into a bowl of ice water. Keep the hand in there for fifteen to twenty minutes. While in the water keep moving the fingers. This should remove any lingering swelling and decrease pain. the sharp pain in the shoulder maybe due to when the hand was struck the first instinct was to forcibly remove the arm and in so doing pulled a muscle. Again if in a few days there is no improvement then see a doctor or if you want an immediate answer see one now.

Pain Between my 4th and 5th Metacarpals?

I've had pain in between my 4th and 5th knuckles for about 3 weeks and nothing has improved. The pain is centered mostly on the side of my 4th knuckle. I don't know why I have this pain and was wondering how to make it better and what it is. Sometimes I will have pain that runs down the pinky side of my hand but not very often. In February, I was diagnosed with a carpal tunnel sprain but it was in my wrist near my thumb, so I think this new pain is something different. Any suggestions?

Broken 5th Metacarpal recovery timeline?

I broke my 5th metacarpal (undisplaced, spiral, midway down the bone, similar to this image - http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/brennerak/kidhand3.jpg ). The injury occurred 3 weeks ago and I immediately went to the ER where they gave me a partial hand/wrist cast secured by an ace bandage. Healing seems to be going well (less pain on movement of my hand/fingers). There is still considerable swelling in the area of the break and limited (about 75%) ability to move my pinky and ring fingers on my right hand. I have been out of work as my job is all done using my hands, and I am hoping the swelling and pain will be sufficient as I am scheduled to return to work in 1 week. My question is, is there risk of further injury to go back to work 4 weeks after a non-displaced fracture like this, or is it more dealing with the pain? Also, is it risky to return to sports like waterskiing and softball after 7.5 or 8 weeks post-injury or is that sufficient healing time for the bone? Thank you!

Is there instant pain when your break a metacarpal (hand bone)?

I was going to be punched and so I lifted by left hand to block the hit, unfortunately I didn't have time to turn the hand over. I noticed nothing initially, then after 10 minutes or so there was pain at the bottom of the 5th metacarpal (bone in the hand below the pinky finger) If I move my hand in certain positions theres is a pretty concentrated pain, would I have felt it right away if I had broken my metacarpal, could this be something else like a bad bruise? To what I can percieve there isn't much swelling, or none at all, just pain on that one area. Thank you for any help!

When a foot fracture is healing, is swelling without pain normal after 6 weeks?

It depends on what bone was broken, how it was treated ( cast, external fixation, pins, internal fixation, etc.). It is ultimately a question for an X-ray. If the bone(s) have healed and the swelling is aling the fracture line, that is called a panus, it is a normal part of healing. If it is global swelling with dark discoloration in the mist gravity dependent parts it might not be a good thing. Painless is good unless the fracture or repair damaged a nerve or you have a condition that impairs the ability of the nerves to sense pain. I would get an X-ray and see how the site is healing. Less use is better until you get the OK for partial (toe touch with crutches) or nonweightbearing or normal use. A failed healing of a fracture is always bad but a nonunion of a foot fracture is REALLY painful. Get seen, better to know for sure.

5th metatarsal fracture/break?

okay, so..last monday I fell down the steps and broke my right 5th metatarsal bone. I was put in an air cast boot and was told that I have to go back in 6 weeks to see how the healing is progressing. yesterday I had my boot off all day, and I was wondering if anyone know if that was okay to do? I am able to apple some pressure to the injured foot. how often can I have the boot off? how much do I have to wear it? also, does anyone know why the 5th metatarsal is difficult to heal? the specialist said it is harder to heal, and smoking stunts the healing. anyone know why? all opinions are helpful. thanks!

Do you think that my hand is broken or fractured?

Recently I punched a wall (sheetrock) with a closed fist in a hammer like fashion (Instead of punching with my knuckles, I hit the wall with my right hand using the side where my pinky is) -- kinda like a karate chop with a closed fist

Its now really swollen, and I can't see my pinky knuckle but I can feel the tendon. I can close my fist and open it. It hurts when I extend my pinky all the way, but I suppose it hurts because that entire side is swollen)

Any ideas? And I do realize that I should have an x-ray done, but I'd like some advice from others beforehand.

Thank You.

I punched a wall, and now my first 3 fingers are swollen. Could they be broken?

You probably have a boxers fracture. Try feeling your 5th metacarpal with your left hand. Just press gently on it. If that hurts like hell, it's definately a boxers fracture (broken 5th metacarpal). If that doesn't hurt much, there's a good chance it's "just the blow". Which will hurt for a few days and then get better.

Something is for sure though. It's not sprained. A sprain is a soft tissue damage. Like when you tear a ligament or a tendon. And that doesn't happen when you punch a wall :-) so either a really bad bruise or a fracture. I think you should go to the ER.

Good luck :-)
