Have I Got Arachnophobia

I have arachnophobia, should I get a tarantula?

Well, keeping any pet spider will familiarize and expose yourself to spiders, thereby quelling much of your anxieties. The only thing that might make your fear worse would be panic, and continued practice of being afraid of spiders.
I have seen a number of people overcome this fear by keeping tarantulas for pets, the downside is some people still have fears of common house spiders, but love their pets.
I have also seen this idea backfire, as some people are just too scared to properly care for tarantulas.
What you might consider is catching something like a common house spider and keep it for a pet, Many do make good pet spiders, and some, docile enough to freely handle.
If you discover this just won't work, you can set the house spider free, something you can't do with a tarantula other than a native species.
Many people have overcome arachnophobia by keeping pet spiders, and often, because they invest the time to become familiar with them and get to know spiders, they discover they like spiders or become fascinated with them. You might read an answer I gave here:

Keeping pet spiders is easy, even tarantulas, but consider tarantulas can live many years, so this becomes a long term responsibility to care for your pet. If you chose this route, you might read about keeping spiders for pets:

One of my personal favorites is the southern house spider or Arizona black hole spider.
They are docile enough to handle, never bite, and can live up to 8 years in captivity.
I also keep hobo spiders and often handle them. A bit more skittish, and no, they are not dangerous.
Godspeed.

Severe Arachnophobia?

Is this a severe case of arachnophobia?
I check behind the toilet when I sit down.
If I feel something on me I jump and try to get it off.
Can't be in the same room as one.
I was up all last night thinking about them.
I have nightmares.
If I see one I freak out completely.
I check my clothes before I put them on.
I check the rooms corners after I walk in.

Is this severe? How can I get over all this? ^

How do I know if I have arachnophobia?!?!!?

I'm 17 and I know that most people have got a fear of spiders but its usually not that bad, but is my fear the typical (everyone has it) fear of spiders or is it proper arachnophobia. small spiders, I'm fine with, no problem, but medium and big ones, yikes!

so last night, I watched a film in bed and it finished around 1 am, so when it ended, I turned on the bed room light to turn off the tv and there is this big @ss spider sitting off on my wall. it wasnt really big, the body itself was the size of 2 peas but the legs were so long the whole spider could cover my fist. So i freaked out, and started having a panic attack, as in I started crying hysterically, my heart started beating soo fast and my whole body was shaking also with hyperventilation ! this had never happened to me before, I seriously had never been so scared in my whole life. I needed someone to get the spider out of the room because I sure as hell couldnt but everyone one in the house was asleep as it was past 1am, so I sat and stared at the spider for 7 hours straight across the room from it because I couldnt sleep knowing it was in the room. when the spider was still, I was relaxed and okay but every time the spider moved slightly or just shook its leg, I would hyperventilate, shake rapidly and start hysterically crying again. and I knew that it was a totally irrational way to react but I wouldnt help it, I even kept chanting 'It's more scared of me then I am of' over and over again to calm me down but it didnt work. it eventually I got my little bother (13) to get the spider out for me at 8am, now its 8:40 and my eyes are really red because I've been awake for 23.5 hours because basically lost 7 and a 1/2 hrs of sleep last night because of that damn spider! so what do you think? do I suffer from Arachnophobia??

Lil Wayne said "Im so fly i got arachnophobia"?

It's very clever

How to kill a spider when I have arachnophobia?

This same exact thing happened to me the other day except I wasn't in my room so I was less nervous. I even have this fear that if I am the one to kill it that they will all come after me and kill me in the most horrendous ways. ANYWAYS what I did after long hours of pressuring myself and stopping the hyperventilation (lol sad I know) I finally got the guts to just capture it. I waited for it to go on a flat surface (NOT the carpet it will escape) and then found something like a cup or a jar or a box and turning it upside down and then throwing it over the spider. I left and went to try and sleep on the other side of the house and waited til morning cause then my mom or dad would find it and kill it for me. If your brave enough to kill it I would spray things on it... but idk. Honestly, I don't think you have arachnophobia considering you are making some attempt of getting rid of it. People with phobias have great fears that make it hard for them to even stand in the same room or think about it. On the more serious levels of phobias they might go panic and cry and scream and look completely insane running as far away from what it is. It's pretty sad but your lucky you don't have those serious cases! Good luck with the spider and I would sleep somewhere else if I were you...

Is it a bad idea to own a tarantula if you have arachnophobia but wants to get over it? I'm an animal lover and feels guilty that I don't love spiders as much as other animals.

Purchasing a tarantula is a really bad idea. Loving animals doesn’t translate to caging them. Arachnophobia is a common fear, owning a spider isn’t likely to change your nature.Owning a tarantula strikes me as an exercise in futility. If you truly love “animals”, start with a conscious decision to catch and release household spiders. When you see a spider contain it with a glass, slide a sheet of paper under the glass, hold steady as you walk outside. With a flick of the wrist, remove paper and set house spider free.:)

I have really bad arachnophobia. Please help!?

First, your lack of familiarity with spiders provoked a fear when you found the spiders crawling on you.
You simply did not know this is a totally harmless event. You brought on your own fears by dwelling on them instead of taking control of them. Your hallucinations, like spotting real spiders incites your fear, and you further dwell on it until you literally 'brainwash' yourself. now you suffer arachnophobia.
To overcome this yourself takes will power.More will power than your fear. you must take command of your fear in any situation with a spider. looking at photos, spotting a spider on the wall, finding a spider crawling on you. you must become familiar enough with spiders for you to realize no harm at all will come to you with any of these situations. You reach a point where all the horror stories, urban myths, and hyperbole mean nothing because you know better. with your fear this far diminished, catching a spider and putting it outside,or just plain ignoring them would be easy.
Unless you feel you can do this on your own, you may need counseling with a professional therapist.
One thing that will help right now,is when you spot a spider, don't let your fear take control of you. you take control of your fear. and especially don't dwell on your fears or fantasize them.
If you can watch the following,it will give you an idea just how harmless spiders really are.
