Healthier Options Than Bread

What is healthier bread or tortillas?

It's hard to say. Whichever bread is made from whole grain is probably healthiest, though a corn tortilla (whole corn) is pretty tasty and healthy. I think the corn tortilla tastes best, and if it tastes better (and is healthy) it's going to be better for you because it improves your mood, don't forget about that aspect of health! So eat whatever healthy option you prefer.

Healthiest options at subway?

Hey !
A "mini" is a four inch sandwich. It is the size that comes with the kid meals. So if you are very hungry, I would not suggest getting the mini. But it's great for when you aren't that hungry or you need something to hold you over for a while before a bigger meal.
And yes, ask the worker to hollow out the bread for you ! I have had people ask me to do that, and I don't mind at all. Of course, it may be a bit bothersome if there is a long line out the door, but you should be okay.

And don't forget, Subway offers salads. You can get any sandwich made into a salad. That eliminates your carb problem. You get whatever meat you want, and can add whichever vegetables you would like !

Is meat a healthier option than bread?

Bread is called the ‘staff of life’ because it, or at least grain, is the basis of civilization. Not only does it have carbohydrates for energy, but also protein, fibre, and vitamins. However, it is not enough to eat only bread.A balanced diet will also include fruits and vegetables and sources of protein like meats, fish, dairy, and pulses. There are a few hunting societies, like the Inuit, which existed substantially on animal protein, but those eat the entire animal, including the stomach contents to get a balanced diet. Both kinds of food are healthy and both kinds of food are needed for a healthy body.

Are wraps healthier than bread?

No a wrap is not healthier than bread per se.  Depending on the ingredients and nutritional content, a wrap may be a better or worse choice than a slice of bread.  The size of the wrap matters as well--are we talking the small size or huge burrito-size ones? Always look at the number of calories, fat grams, fiber and protein as well as whether the wrap is made with whole wheat or just enriched flour.  Often a slice of bread is 80 - 120 calories, so for a sandwich that is 160 - 240.  A healthy wrap can be low fat and just 100 calories so you can bank those extra calories. That said, the right wrap can definitely be a lower calorie choice with stong nutrition.  For example, I use Flatout Bread Low Carb, High Fiber Flatbreads

Are wraps healthier than bread sandwiches?

Green Ghost is right. Most things one would use as wraps are just bread. Tortillas. Lavosh. Yadda yadda. Generally speaking they CAN be better. But that depends on the bread you compare it with.

Most wraps (i.e., tortillas) are made with refined white flour which is bad for you. I have seen whole wheat wraps. I have not seen whole wheat lavosh.

Studies done on basic white bread vs basic flour (white) tortilla for lunches ended up giving the tortilla glowing reviews. This is probably where you got the idea for your question.

However, the studies glowing reviews - of course - gave way to mass produced tortillas. No longer being made by "mom and pop" facilites with very simple ingredients, they are pretty much loaded in chemicals so they'll have a 15 year shelf life.

Many wrap fast food joints use fancy tortillas to give the customer more "variety." These fancy tortillas also have a lot of junk in them because they too are mass produced.

Pita is bread. Many kosher whole wheat pitas have no chemical additives. Flour, water and yeast. The whole wheat flour is SO much better for you. Wins hands down over a refined white flour wrap. "But I got a spinach wrap" you say. Still made with refined white flour. Pita. Hands down. I buy a whole grain pita with 5 different whole grains in it. It's costs more. But it's worth it.

French bakery hemp breads are LOADED with all sorts of things that are fantastic for you. Yum Yummy!

Ezekiel's sprouted whole wheat tortillas are a truly divine inspiration. But they tend to be very hard. Even when warmed, they break rather than fold making them impossible to use as wraps. I use them like soft tortilla chips.

Is Panera Bread healthy for you?

I just went for the first yesterday and LOVED IT!!! I got a half a sandwhich (smoked turkey with mayo) and clam chowder with it. It surely seems healthier than McDonalds obviously, but is this ok for losing weight to eat here? It was very fresh and tasty!

Is gluten free bread healthier than normal bread?

Normally gluten free bread is made with complex carbs (ie: non-typical wheat, and whole grains ie: spelt, rye, etc)

which is far healthier than white bread, and has less of an allergic reaction (for my husband if he eats wheat or gluten it's sneezing and constant runny nose-like a forever cold, for others it could make them tired sleepy, cranky, foggy brain, even fat because it doesn't metabolize properly in some people... according to my naturopath and many detox books)

We took hubby off wheat and gluten, gave him a special liquid solution, and the problem he had for years cleared up in days.

That was our experience anyways

Which Subway bread is the healthiest for you?

Does it bother anyone else that a double meat six inch is more expensive than the same 12 inch? I feel like ordering a 12 inch, have them put all the ingredients on one half and discard the other half.Edit 3/28/2014: Thanks Jeremy for backing my play. Someone 'up there' heard me. I went to my local subway and proposed just that, a 12 inch with everything on one side. The cost worked out about the same. Unless you catch one of their sales, which have thinned out a bit.The funny postscript for this question about which bread is 'healthiest' points to this story: (please don't mind the web sites overall bias) Subway Vows to Not Put Shoe Rubber Chemicals in Your ‘Healthy’ Sandwich Bread Anymore turns out Azodicarbonamide is a popular food additive. Scary! Almost 500 Foods Contain The 'Yoga Mat' Compound. Should We Care?EDIT: Flat Bread is listed as having the same amount of calories and carbs as regular breads, surprise! I would advocate asking the preparer pull out a good amount of bread on the rolls if you are looking to reduce bad calories.

Which is healthier, a spinach tortilla or whole wheat bread?

The answer depends on a number of factors and what you mean by "healthier". For example, strictly speaking, whole wheat bread (that is bread with 100% whole wheat flour as the main ingredient) will typically be "healthier" than a spinach tortilla as it has whole grains, decent fiber and protein, and will probably have no cholestoral and lower amounts of fat than a tortilla. The typical tortilla has higher amounts of fat, cholestoral and very little fiber. Conversally, if you are buying the cheapest whole wheat bread out there and it is full of trans fat and preservatives but your tortilla is organic than the tortilla might be the healthier option.

So, considering all things even, an organic piece of whole wheat bread is "healthier" than an organic spinach tortilla in most cases. A conventional piece of whole wheat bread is "healthier" than a conventional spinach tortilla in most cases.

Another piece of information to consider. A spinach tortilla typically has none of the health benefits of actual spinach. Often times the spinach is used only for coloring and no nutrients are passed along to the tortilla.

Is having bread on a daily-basis for breakfast a healthy option?

I would say so but you should lean towards whole grain and you should pair it with protein or other wholesome, nutrient-dense foods, such as: eggs, cheese or cream cheese, peanut butter, avocado (list goes on).I would say breakfast is probably the most ideal time to consume breads and carbs, because you are more likely to burn off the energy over the course of your morning and/or day, as opposed to consuming breads and carbs later in the day or at night.Breads are enriched with folic acid, niacin, iron, thiamine and riboflavin (it's pretty much REQUIRED in the United States) which are essential to our diets, so my simple answer is: YES, they are healthy to eat for breakfast.(Of course, having diabetes or specific allergies can put a different spin on this).
