Heartworm Testing Cost For Ferrets

How much does a canine heart-worm treatment cost?

I have heard prices quoted from $400 - $800 in the US.Some people decide not to treat the active infestation, and simply treat the larval heartworms and wait.  The adults will die in about three years, so if there are no larvae to re-infect the dog, the infestation will eventually go away. Some vets will support you in this.  Discuss it with your vet; the heartworm treatment is not safe for all breeds of dogs.

How much does a heartworm test costs at banfield?

I'm sorry I should have been more clear, my 7 month old puppy is currently under their Wellness Plan, which means office visits are free. However, he is not taking heartworm preventatives and I wanted to get him tested before putting him on meds. I want to know how much it costs to get him tested at banfield because if it is too expensive then I will take him to a local vet, they quoted me a price of $25.

I don't want to sound cheap but I am an unemployed college grad. Lol

If you have an only indoor ferret, does it still need shots?

I'm wanting to get a ferret and when i went to petco and tried to ask questions, the people are rude first of all. But the girl told me i'd have to get it shots every month or something because people let their ferrets outside and they can catch an illness. I tried to ask what if i just always keep it inside and she just told me it needs shots. Which ever ferret i get.
So is that really true? I can't afford to get a ferret shots all the time. And i would keep it in my house. I wouldn't let it outside. :/

How can I help my bloated ferret???

Ok...your vet wants to give an ultrasound to see what is going on with his heart. Cardiomyopothy is common in ferrets. This disease will cause some 'swelling' around the chest and belly. Testing the fluid may be a waste of money. Draining it away and giving the ferret lasix would help make him more comfortable. Exploratory surgery is an even BIGGER waste of money. If it was a foreign body that your ferret ingested he would be dead by now and you would have long ago noticed he wasn't pooping properly. As far as exploratory surgery for the heart...waste...they are already going to do an ultrasound. I'm surprised the blood work didn't show anything here. Yikes! I wish you luck. Also...just curious, why are you feeding raw meat? How long have you been feeding it? Did he have a poop sample tested? Its typically routine so I'm sure they did.

FYI: Lasix is commonly used in ferrets with heart disease. The x-ray must have shown somehting for your vet to prescribe it. I don't know...I get the impression that the vet is trying to 'milk you for all its worth' and having you waste money on tests that are not necessary at this point. If I were you I would try another ferret knowledgeable vet or just tell the vet you want him tested for something like heart worm just to rule it out and be certain that cardiomyopathy is what the problem is. Keep in mind that the ultrasound is the only thing I don't think you are wasting money on. The ultrasound is what is used to determine what type of cardiomyopathy you are dealing with. The ultrasound enables the vet to get 'a better look' from what was already determined on the x-ray.
