Hedgehogs As Pets Care And Management

Which pet is easier to take care of, a tortoise or a hedgehog?

I'm part of a family of five, a mother (who won't be involved in looking after either pet), and four children from eleven to twenty. So we're all pretty responsible. 4/5 of us are either in full time education or have a full time job, so we don't have a lot of time for a lot of cleaning, but have time to leave the pets to roam in supervised areas.

What I want to know is which pet would best suit our lifestyle, what both pets require, if there are known health issues etc.

We have turtles, and we weren't given clear instructions on how to take care of them by the seller, so they were miserable for a while for a variety of reasons, just a few of them being that they didn't have the right lamp and the water temperature was too low etc. It turned out to be quite expensive to make the environment how they'd prefer it, so I'd like to prevent that by asking beforehand if there are any MUST HAVES for either pet, eg. I know hedgehogs need a lot of exercise so a wheel is essential.

And how much does upkeep and food cost for each pet?

Thanks!
P.S. It doesn't matter if you don't have both a tortoise and a hedgehog, just talk about the one you DO have!
And I'd really like it to be as detailed as possible, so justify whatever facts you give, (eg. don't just say, oh tortoises are great! Say why!)

Basic Hedgehog care please?

Well my family are thinking of getting a Hedgehog but none of us know a lot about hedgehog care. All we know is that hedgehogs are not legal in some places and they can have insects as treats. But thats about all. Can a hedgehog owner give us some tips on care? General care I mean.

How can I tame an aggressive hedgehog?

You’ll want to find out why your hedgehog is acting aggressive in the first place. Some hedgehogs just have a grumpy personality. However, it could also be because something in the environment is bothering him.If there is no problems with the environment, then be patient and give your hedgehog some time to get used to you.Wear a t-shirt to bed for a few days, and then roll it up and put it in your hedgehog’s cage. This way, your hedgehog will be able to get used to your scent.Another things you can do is keep your hedgehog in your lap when you’re watching TV.You can read about how to pick up an aggressive hedgehog here.I hope that helps :)

I put my hedgehog in the pool?

my hedgehog loves swimming! and she looks so cute. i would say it was ok, as long as there was no chlorine in the pool. that would make me nervous about putting her in, it could cause probs to her eyes maybe. just keep an eye on her and see how she does, she should be ok though. was she in very long?

Pygmy hedgehog or chameleon?

just asking a opinion.

I am a animal lover, dog and cat groomer for 8 years, work in a pet store etc..

I would like a new pet but not really wanting a dog cause I live in a apartment and dont want a dog until I have a nice size backyard and a bigger home.I have 2 cats that I take care of really well

I have been interested in pygmy hedgehogs for a few years now and have been researching them for awhile and they seem like a good little pet.I also have taken a liking to a chameleon.

I have had small pets similar to a hedgehod before like rats and hamsters but never had a reptiile

does anyone have any thought or which one would be a good one to have?

Can i keep a hedgehog in a closed room?

I am thinking of getting a hedgehog, but i also have three cats; i'm only really worried about one that might try to hurt him but if i got one his cage would be in my room so i could have the door closed. I am still in high school so the door would be closed most of the day and i just want to make sure that is ok for the hedgehog. I have heard and read that some small animals need a good air current in the room and i live in Tx, so in the summers it can get really stuffy and warm in my room, not all the time but a few.
So if this isn't a good idea please let me know so i can think of an other way to keep my cat away; if anyone knows first hand what to do please tell, i have everything else i need know for caring for them so this is really the only thing that is holding me back.

I have been bitten by wild hedgehog once I tried to grab it. What are the chances of rabies?

According to Hedgehog Zoonoses the chance of rabies is quite low. The article mentions that only one case has been reported of a Hedgehog with rabies. This happened in Budapest. But they can carry other diseases, the most common of which is Salmonellosis.Whether or not you contract an infection or illness will depend largely on where you live and the types of diseases the local hedgehog population may be carrying.CRASH Care Rehabilitation and Aid for Sick HedgehogsHEDGEHOG RABIES hits Russia: Public warned not to go near the animals (The Daily Mail is not the most reliable news source, so I don’t know how accurate this is.)

Low-maintenance pet for college student?

Wait until you graduate.

I've worked in animal shelters and I can tell you that there are always college kids surrendering pets at the end of every term. You don't know where your life will take you for the next few years. It's not responsible to get a pet right now.

INSTEAD - GO TO MORE PARTIES!

Find something else to do with your life rather than spend money and time on an animal.

Is it possible to get a license to own a hedgehog in NYC?

I don't think you can own a Hedgehog in the Burroughs even with a license. Major Giuliani was very active in enforcing his interpretation of the US Department of Agriculture's stance on controlling potential zoonotic diseases that could be carried and transmitted by pet hedgehogs or by wild-caught hedgehogs that have been rescued.

I think the issue is the hedgehog's species, and what is considered a wild animal and what is the domestic hybrid variety.

SUMMARY: This document gives notice that we are now regulating under the Animal Welfare Act the handling, care, and treatment at retail pet stores of small mammals commonly referred to as “pocket pets'' and requiring any retail pet store that sells pocket pets to be licensed as a dealer under the Animal Welfare Act. This action is necessary because the Animal Welfare Act regulations require regulation of all persons who sell exotic or wild animals for research, exhibition, or for use as a pet, and we consider pocket pets to be exotic or wild animals for this purpose.

I am sorry, you will have to wait until you move out of that district. If you do manage to get a hedgehog and it is confiscated, they are very strict and will probably euthanize your pet, so it's not worth the risk.
