Pharmacy Technician Study Tips?

I was in the exact same boat as you just a couple weeks ago. First of all, don't even try memorizing all the drugs..there's too many! Just know the common ones, but even those are a lot! Try memorizing what you can. I made hundreds of flash cards, and probably got tested on 10% of the drugs I studied and I didn't even study all my cards, it was ridiculous! If it weren't for the math, I probably wouldn't have passed. There's lots of conversions and proportion problems, some alligations, so do lots of practice problems. Make sure you know the math metric conversions (ie. how many lbs are in a kg, g in oz, mL in tbsp, etc.) because you'll need them for the problems. Know some of the rules and regulations in regards to schedule II drugs and other controlled drugs. You don't need to know too many abbreviations, just the basics like QID, BID, gtts, ac, pc, etc.

It seems like you're doing a lot more studying that I did and I passed. You'll be fine. Do well on the math, which isn't as hard as it seems, and you should be alright. Good luck!

How long does it take to become a pharmacist?

Only Sandra had a good answer. I'll try and break it down simply.

To be a pharmacist in the US, you need to go to pharmacy school which is a grad school.

Pharmacy schools, like other medically related grad schools, have a certain list of required courses they want you to take before you start pharmacy school (see each individual pharm school for their specific list). Pharmacy school normally lasts 4 years. Schools like Univ of Pacific in California last only 3 years because they are year round and don't have a summer break like "regular" pharmacy schools.

Now, technically, pharmacy schools don't require you to get a bachelors degree. It only takes 2 years to finish all those required courses. If you wanted to speed through, it'd take you 5 years (2 yrs in undergrad, and then 3 yrs at a school like UOP). Or, 6 years at a regular schedule pharm school.

However, pharmacy is extremely competitive. So, many applicants get a bachelors degree (4 yrs or so) before applying to pharm school in order to look better on the application. Doing that, it'd take you 8 yrs (4 undergrad, 4 pharm school) or 7 at a school like UOP. In a state like CA, it's quite competitive so having a 4 yr bachelors degree seems to be the norm rather than the exception.

Is studying pharmacy today a good career option?

There are no career options that are universally good. There are no all-size-fits-all as far as careers are concerned, and that’s why there is no such thing as “good career choice”.A lawyer is not the best career in the world for somebody who hates arguing. A doctor is not the best career for somebody who hates the sight of blood. Both those careers are not a good fit for someone who prefers to work alone, in complete solitude. You should know what turns you on and what turns you off. You should pay attention to how you feel about doing certain things.Steer away from people who want to tell you which is a “good” or a “bad” career choice. They’re charlatans.Don’t ask what others think of this profession. They will tell you just that - what THEY think about this profession. But you want to know your opinion, don’t you? Isn’t your opinion most important for you?Pros and cons are person specific. Not everybody will agree with my list of pros and cons. Someone might even take my list and say that the pros are actually cons (to this person) and vice versa. What’s the point knowing whether pharmacy (or law, or mowing loans) today is a good career option?Every profession has its ups and downs. Objectively, now it might /might not be a good moment to enter a certain profession but this may change. How about in 5, 10 or 15 years? How can we guarantee what will happen to this profession or industry? What others say about this profession is largely irrelevant because if it’s your passion you are more likely to achieve great results than by doing something which does not turn you on, or which feels like a drudgery to you. In every profession there’s always a room for people who are passionate about it and they are the ones who will eventually prevail. Most important, don’t be afraid to try new things. You can always pivot or transition to something new again.Doing is most important. Not thinking about what you might be doing.Go with your gut instinct. Do. Try. Pivot. Until you find your thing.

What is the future of B.pharm students?

I can tell you a lot of opportunities of academics, research and foreign education and job after your BPharm. However, if your question is regarding the job opportunities and earning immediately after BPharm, that too in India itself, here are some imp points..First of all, do not expect or compare your salary with your fellow engineering and IT friends!in case of job there are two options: Govt job and Private jobsto get into a govt job is a good option (here, you have to give the entrance exam for that particular govt post)if private, try to go for good industries. However, starting your career by working in a descent company and then promoting yourself to a better one is also a good option as you may not get a very good company immediately after your Bachelors.Starting your own medical shop is a good option. But, please look for a good spot! A pharmacy store with a huge competition is pointless!and this is the risky but fruitful one! you can think of starting your own pharmaceutical plant. start it at a small scale and then increase your market. I know few people who have their own mfg unit of general drugs like anti pyretics, analgesics, drugs for cough and cold, etc. you can capture the local market by this way!Speaking in a nutshell, one can not expect a huge hyping amount, salary or a profit immediately at the start of any venture in pharmacy, but determination, hard work and obviously smart work and judicious choices in ur profession will give you achieve great results ahead! As far as further education is concerned, its been already discussed in another answer.

Pharmacist Vs. Psychiatrist?

Psychiatry is not a "program" at university--you get a BA or BS, then go to medical school for 4 years, then start a psychiatric residency. So, pharmacy is less time. You have to LOVE chemistry as you need 6-8 classes, and pharm schools are very competitive (as are medical schools). You'd need to major in biochemistry or something like that for both programs. Yes, medical school is very expensive and you really can't work for the four years (no summers off).

Is pharmacy a good career?

Yes, of course becoming a pharmacist is a good choice.but there two scenarios after u become a pharmacist1)PHARMACIST IN INDIA ;-Pharmacist in India is nothing more than a COMPOUNDER ( he/she reads the prescription and dispenses the required medicines to the patient from pharmacy) .Also he sometimes have to tell how administer the drug ,time of drug administration and frequency , precaution are also told sometimes . SO, THIS IS THE JOB OF PHARMACIST IN INDIA BUT EARN A PRETTY WELL AT THE END OF THE DAY DUE HIGH MARGIN IN CASE OF MEDICINES.Moreover all the pharmacy that is community pharmacy(run in society like u might have visited the one in your society),hospital pharmacy (pharmacy setup in the hospital itself ,which u might have seen in combination with the hospital only and clinical pharmacist (provide healthcare treatment and other remedies ) are same in India .SO,IN INDIA BECOMING A PHARMACIST IS NOT A VERY GOOD CHOICE2)PHARMACIST IN ABROAD:-In abroad the scenario is opposite .HERE THE PHARMACIST HAVE A RIGHT TO PRESCRIBE A MEDICINE LIKE A DOCTOR PRESCRIBES IN INDIA .Hence u are treated as a doctor in abroad after becoming pharmacist and u will earn a decent amount of money (around $ 50–60/hr) . But its not a easy task to become a pharmacist in abroad as u have to crack the respective entrance exams of the country in which u want to go.SO ITS YOUR CHOICE TO MAKE THE DECISION AND HOPE THIS ANSWER HELPED YOU.THANK YOU

Pharmacy Technician?

Hello. This is a VERY good field to look into. It really doesnt take that long to get certified it just depends on how they teach or where you go to determine how long it will take you to finish. You have 2 options:

1. CVS, that is where I worked and i became Certifiied Pharmacy Technician. I am still there now. I enjoy it. It is a great opportunity to work because you have alot of options like. You start off As a PSA.

Pharmacy Service Associate (PSA)

This is an entry-level role. The primary focus for a PSA is on customer service. Responsibilities within the position include: Ringing out prescriptions, answering telephones, and Pharmacist referrals. The role of the PSA is important because he/she is often the first person with whom the customer comes into contact. The impression that the PSA gives the customer may determine the outcome of that customer's experience at CVS/pharmacy.

Pharmacy Technician

This is a second level position that builds upon the skills and responsibilities of the PSA. The role of the Technician is focused on customer service and prescription order processing, as well as problem resolution and inventory management. The role of the Technician is important because he/she helps to ensure that the right customer receives the right prescription, every time.

Pharmacy Lead Technician

This is a third-level position that builds upon the skills and responsibilities of the Tech. The role of the Pharmacy Lead Technician includes more focus on mentoring and guiding support staff members in team development. The Lead Technician is important because he or she serves as a role model for for other Pharmacy Support Staff, and supports the Pharmacist.

You can also call your local cvs, and talk with the lead manager or the pharmacist in charge.

2. You can go to a community college and alot of them have started classes where you go for 6-8 weeks and it helps you prepare for the Pharmacy Technician Exam. My friend done that and she passed. They meet for like 4-5 hours 3 or 2 times a week

Good Luck
