Which branch is better for engineering civil or computer science?

I am personally a civil engineer but will try to be neutral:Let me tell you pros and Con's of both then you can decide for yourself as that is what matters the most:Computer science :Pros:With the onset of digital era you can do lots of stuff after taking CS ..open startups , learn ethical hacking and for many years now the demand of India CS engineers is very high in silicon valley ( yes trump has made some recent reservation but he will not always be there ) and in other parts of world too India CS engineers are required.Work environment is way better than a civil engineer in most of the casesYou guys have pretty good female ratio in class :pIf you get a decent college its most likely you will get placedCon's :Too much saturation in your field ..every other guy wants to take CS as it pays big bucksYou get mocked by civil, electrical, mechanical branch all the time as they think you are not a proper engineer unless you don't sweat it out in sunMost people after sometime get up being bored as your life reduces to your office block no outside experienceVery few government jobsCivil engineering:Pros :You have a very interesting job profile , get to learn about different basic phenomenon all your careerOpen up your own firms easily .. Be creative design as you like.. Leave your impression on the world for generation to seeLow initial salary but with experience gain enough to live a happy satisfied lifeHuge amount of govt jobsVast variety of fields to specialize inHuge demand in gulf nations (DUBAI,QATAR) .. You can also work in US or GB by passing a exam based on basic civil knowledgeCon's :Very less campus placement (except top institutions)Growth may take timeHave to sweat it out in sunWorking hours may be oddVery vast branch so huge efforts required to be put in while studying if you are serious

Is volunteering at a retirement home/nursing home lame?

It is not lame, it is commendable. Your friends don't know what they are talking about and I doubt they'd say the same about you to their grandparents.

However, a word of warning - don't be used as free labour. Nursing homes are, mainly, businesses not charities. They charge high fees for their services and should pay decent wages to STAFF who are there to do the actual work. Such places should be FULLY staffed at all times and anything done by a volunteer should be non-essential and for enjoyment of the residents.

Your role should be to make their boring, long day a little more pleasant. You would make some of them very happy by just chatting to them or reading to them - just flicking the pages of a magazine which they cannot turn themselves and cannot see as clearly as you can. You could ask them if they like jigsaws or any form of craft work and ask matron if there are suitable supplies there for such purposes. Talking to the residents will help you find out what they would like to do during those long periods between meals and when their family (if they have any family) come to visit.

Don't let your friends put you off. This could end up with you enjoying it so much that others will join you, but, as I've already said, don't be told what it is you must do and be used as free labour. If one home owner or matron tries that then it would be best for you to report that fact to the authorities, but move to a different home to help.

Finally if, through doing voluntary work and seeing what the paid workers do for the elderly, you decide that this is the type of work you would like to do when you leave school you could ask the matron if he/she would let you know if ever there is a paid Saturday job available (or a few hours in an evening) so that you could do a little of the 'proper' job as a trial to ensure that you really would enjoy that work.

What is the future of petroleum engineering as a career choice?

I personally don't recommand to pursue Petroleum engineering as your Bachelor's degree. Always pursue your bachelor's degree in core sector, so that you can have strong back up. Moreover as this sector is cyclic in nature, it doesn't assure you jobs in odd times.Petroleum engineering very speciallized and streamlined course. It is better to chose such courses at Master's level. If you pursue your degree in mechanical, chemical, civil or any other core branch, the basic fundamentals will remain same. As petroleum engineering is applied branch, fundamentals from your bachelor will be useful. Anyone can enter in Petroleum engineering but vice versa may not be possible.Today 70 % petroleum graduates in India struggling to get job in Petroleum sector. They end up with no option other than going for MS or working with small companies. Don't go behind fancy packages they show it as survey. I know good engineers working for peanuts (2500 month salary provided by one of the rig contractor). People may criticize me but this is reality and one has to accept it (I am talking about Indian point of view where energy sector is still emerging). Now it's upto you.

What salary will I get after MCA?

I will answer this question later after discussing my experience and thoughts. This is the question that every student search on google before taking admissions in MCA. I am also an MCA degree holder. My free advice is to get Admission in a good College. And from first day start working on your Aptitude and reasoning abilities because in MCA we generally focus on our Academic and technical subjects. But the entry point is Aptitude and Reasoning Tests that most giant companies follow for freshers. And pick one Computer language and sharp your skills in that.Regarding the salary if you got hired in a good company then you will get 25k to 30k per month.if you start from a small or medium level company then you can get 8k to 15k depend upon the company.
