Help Do I Have A Virus

I might have put a virus on my computer help!?!?!!?

Reboot your computer and see if it comes up again. If it does then yes you did put a virus onto your computer, but if it doesn't then no you most probably don't have a virus on your computer.

At worst you might have some adware on your computer that created the pop-up which that can be quite easily removed using ESET online scanner.

http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/

and go into the advanced settings for the online scanner and tick the box that says about searching for potential threats.

The pop-up is just a scare tactic to make you believe you have a virus and chances are if you didn't actually install anything (and you weren't using Internet Explorer) you probably didn't get any virus in there in reality. There are lots of fake pop-ups that warn you that you have thousands of viruses on your computer and you need to call their number to regain control of your computer or install their software to protect your computer.

The problem is when people proceed and install the software, because that is when these scam programs take over, and then they tend to lock the computer down all together so you can't access anything at all and everything you try and run states it was blocked by the program because it was a "virus" and you need to call them to pay them - and in reality it wasn't a virus, the real virus is the fake anti-virus.

If you do reboot your computer and find you've got this what ever you do - Do not call the company or pay them anything, or even enter your card details into their system. Try rebooting into safe mode and seeing if you can disable their software from there using MSCONFIG, but this is only if you have actually installed the program, from the way you describe it, it seems you stopped before you got to the installation phase so you should be fine just run an ESET online scan to be sure, if it is in your computer and you can't disable it you might need to take it to a local PC repair shop to have them disable it, or do an entire system restore back to factory settings - but remember doing this will most probably mean you'll lose all your pictures, documents, music, etc on your computer, some PC repair shops will try and recover the data (we always attempt to recover the persons data), but many computer repair shops are really lazy and just do a system restore to factory defaults and delete all your files in the process.

How do I know if my Mac has a virus?

Macs can get viruses and do  get viruses.  But there are not very many and they are not as serious as the ones that are on Windows.  Some people will tell you this is because the Mac doesn't have the the large installed base of windows. But this is not the reason why. The reason why there are less viruses in the MacOSX today is because Apple has really good mechanisms for patching the MacOSX quickly and easily when a virus does appear and because down deep MacOSX is based on a very secure architecture called UNIX. Out-of-the-box Mac OSX does not enable root user account (although you can over ride this) and is really good about requiring a username and a password in order to do much of anything to the operating system itself. This means that the virus does not have access to a lot of the lower level things that can do a lot of damage on the vast majority of macs. Because of this a lot of virus writers don't even bother to write things that work on the MacOS. Windows doesn't share these features and is therefore much less secure than the Mac which makes it a major target for virus writers who get thier jollies doing evil things to computers. Window out of the box is not as secure or well written. Microsoft has traditionally been much slower about patching it's  systems and a lot of the windows install base are running out of date versions of the OS.  You have to do a lot of work to secure a windows system and a huge percentage of the user base doesn't bother to do the work. Because of this millions and millions of Windows machines are open to viral attacks. This is led to a situation where the general public has the false belief that Macs don't get viruses.  So while you can't say that the MacOS doesn't have viruses you can say that the Mac OS has very few of them that you need to be afraid of and they get felt with quickly.

How does System Restore help to get rid of virus?

It’s not as simple as it being able to wipe a machine clear of viruses. I’ll explain…Imagine you get a virus, it’s going to infect and attack your system in a fast and wide spread fashion. We’re talking your entire system infected in a matter of days at the most. Anything in the Operating System (OS) is compromised.Windows System Restore (WSR) is in the operating system, so it’s going to be targeted by the virus; and because most viruses (rightfully) assume it’s going to be a go-to for most people, it’s going to target that with a higher priority.Because of this, I don’t recommend using WSR as a method for removing a virus. It’s too unreliable. Hypothetically it would revert your system to before you had the virus but it’s more often then not too compromised to do so.IF you aren’t backing up your data, re-formatting the machine is the best option. If you can, back up your data with a disk imager like Macrium Reflect Free, or a snapshot tool like Comodo Time Machine or RollBack Rx. Those will be far more reliable for restoring your machine, and all three offer a freeware version.

Does peeing a lot when you have a cold help to wash out the virus?

In a word, no, it doesn’t get rid of the cold virus. In general, passing plenty of urine, provided you are not a diabetic, is a good thing, because it has all sorts of beneficial effects on bodily systems. It helps to get rid of many waste products, including breakdown products of bacteria, viruses and other bodily cells.Provided you are not over hydrated, which can also be harmful, it helps to keep the body fluids more dilute, and contributes towards a slightly reduced risk of developing thromboembolic phenomena.Bottom line, it is a good thing, in general, to maintain your fluid input and output, rather than letting yourself get excessively dehydrated. This is a brief summary, which I have just done on awakening. There will be much better answers if you look around.Steve
