Help Do I Have Diarrhea

How do I deal with diarrhea?

It depends on what kind of diarrhea.Watery diarrhea, is usually self limiting. They are usually responses to bacterial toxins (and not infection) which causes your intestinal cells to secrete massive amounts of fluid. The recommended treatment for this is oral rehydration solution (NOT PLAIN WATER!) which consists of water, salt, and glucose. The reason you add glucose is that this helps your body absorb sodium, and thus water a little better. Gatorade, for example, is a weak oral rehydration solution (the medical ones are a little stronger).Bloody diarrhea is more complicated. This will depend on the etiology of the disease. Common causes include E. coli, Shigella, and Campylobacter bacteria and may also co-present with constitutional symptoms such as headache, weakness, cramps, nausea, and vomiting. Again, treatment is usually supportive, however, complications can develop such as hemolytic uremic syndrome or typhoid fever. Though people can recover spontaneously from these complications, it's recommended to seek medical treatment since HUS can progress to acute renal failure. Another common cause of bloody diarrhea, especially in this hospital and elderly population is C. diff enterocolitis. This needs to be treated medically with antibiotics, and diagnosed with stool PCR assays. Fatty/foul-smelling diarrhea is usually indicative of a parasitic infection (e.g. Giardia). It's self-limiting in some cases, but anti-parasitics (e.g. metronidazole) can help.Diarrhea in children, especially in infants, can indicate some sort of malabsorption problem. This can be due to a genetic defect in intestinal transporters, or could be part of a more generalized developmental problem. Recurrent diarrhea in kids should be grounds for consultation with a pediatrician. These cases are usually managed with dietary restrictions and/or supplementation. This is not a comprehensive list, but does illustrate the diarrhea is quite a non-specific symptom of many etiologies. Usually, diarrhea is self-limiting and requires no further treatment, but sometimes, it does warrant additional medical attention.

Does Activia help with diarrhea?

Considering Acitivia is a dairy product it probably wouldn't help with your diarrhea. However, I would highly recommend buying dairy pills such as Lactase. You can get them at nearly any drug store, Walmart, Target, etc. You take a pill each time you eat a dairy product or something with milk in it and it helps you digest it. I take them and although they are tedious, they truly work and I never suffer from gas, bloating, diarrhea, etc. anymore if I take my pill while eating dairy.
As for your original question, I wouldn't eat yogurt if you have diarrhea. I would eat simple foods (the BRAT rule- bananas, rice, applesauce and toast) and take your dairy pills if you eat anything with milk in it and your stomach should feel better and your stools should return to usual.
Good luck!

How exactly does sex help with diarrhea?

I asked for natural remedies for the period craps and everyone told me to drink tea and have sex. I'm extremely skeptical. Can anyone clue me in? Any tips on not ---err, soiling the bed in such a condition?

What foods should you eat when you have diarrhea?

Start by eliminating all solid foods and sipping warm or tepid drinks to prevent dehydration. Drinking half a cup every quarter hour or so is usually enough. Suitable drinks include water, mineral water, herbal teas, and ginger ale. Clear broths also help replace salts and other minerals lost. You can make your own rehydration fluid by mixing 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda, a pinch of salt, and 1/4 teaspoon of corn syrup or honey in an 8 ounce glass of water. If you choose a commercial sports drink make sure that the sugar content is low, anything over 10% can aggravate diarrhea.

Follow the B.R.A.T diet. Bananas, applesauce, rice and toast. This is what you should do when you feel like eating, but preferably not within the first 24 hours. Apples and other fruits high in pectin help counteract the diarrhea; that's why unsweetened applesauce is a traditional home remedy. Other suitable foods include salted crackers and chicken-rice soup to help replenish lost sodium and potassium. Avoid milk products until symptoms disappear; some of the organisms that cause diarrhea can temporarily impair the ability to digest milk. Although cooked and pureed fruits and vegetables can usually be tolerated, don't eat raw fruits, high fiber vegetables, and fats until everything is back to normal. Avoid alcohol and caffeine. Even within 48 hours after diarrhea has stopped.
