Help Help Me Find This Sloth To Buy

Can you have a sloth as a pet?

I can't imagine where you'd find one, but if you live in CA, it's apparently legal, along with anteaters and armadillos. They are listed as an exception, on the bottom of page 1:

From wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sloth

"Sloths are native to South and Central America. Of the six species, only one, the Maned Three-toed Sloth, has a classification of "endangered" at present. The ongoing destruction of South America's forests, however, may soon prove a threat to the others."

With the exception of stuffed toys, I couldn't find any outside of native rescues or zoos.

Sounds like a bad idea to me. I can't imagine why you'd want a wild animal for a pet, let alone one with dangerous claws, that moves so slowly it grows algae.

No. NO. NO. NO. Do NOT get a pet sloth.Wild animals make very poor pets. Before you even consider any exotic animal, you need to ask the following questions.Do you already have a vet within a 45 minute drive of your house lined up that is willing to treat your sloth? If not, is your regular vet willing to put in the extra time after work to study how to treat it? If the answer to this is “no,” then you cannot have a pet sloth. Most vets will refuse to treat exotic animals even if it is dying. Are you willing to go without vacation for as long as the sloth lives? If you get a permit, your permit will only cover you and the address of your home. You cannot get a pet sitter. There are no boarding facilities for sloths. If you cross state lines with it, your permit will no longer cover you and the sloth will be confiscated.Your sloth will need a temperature of 85+ degrees F and a humidity of 80%. Are you willing to raise your home temperature to that? Are you aware of what that high a humidity will do to your furniture, carpet, and books? The sloth needs these conditions to be healthy; it is a rainforest animal.Do you know you will have to make several small batches of fresh food every day for it? Sloths are browsers, they don’t eat one big meal. You cannot get Purina Sloth Chow at Walmart. What type of ecosystem do SLOTHS live in?

Sloths live in a tropical rainforest biome.

[Link 1] The rainforest biome consists of three main layers. The "undercarpet," which is home to a variety of blanched fungus and a host of bacteria--both of which need little sunlight and help dead plants and animals decompose; the "carpet," which consists mostly tightly woven tangles of of sawpalm, lichen-moss, and cat's-foot; and the "umbrella," which is the tree-top home of 95 percent of rainforest animal life. Life in the umbrella is quiet by day, but at night, the tree-top habitat explodes with activity: Howler monkeys screech, Spotted Tariots swing from branch to branch using their prehensile tongues to grasp the foliage, and Black Panthers lie in wait to snatch unsuspecting prey by the throat. The umbrella is also home to millions of beetle species--some larger than a football!

Can i get a sloth in australia?

No, sloths are not available for private ownership in Australia. You need a special licence, the type of which are only given to zoos. I love sloths too - I think though that even if they were available to everyday people like us, they would be difficult to house, and probably not all that exciting once the novelty wore off. I think they are an animal that should live in the wild where they belong, not cooped up in a cage.

How do I combat the deadly sin of sloth?

To be honest, as someone who has dealt with issues of motivation, the only thing I've discovered is chemicals. Antidepressants, if you can find the right ones work wonders. But there are numerous over the counter remedies that are surprisingly effective. Rhodiala Rosea can be purchased at most any vitamin shop and is essentially like an all natural adderal. Not as potent and not addictive, but it will increase energy and focus. Unlike many stimulants, which cause anxiety,'Rhodey' as I call it, actually helps with anxiety. It is considered an 'adaptogen' helping the body adapt to stress. There exist other energy boosting supplements at the vitamin shop. Some work better than 'rhodey', but, at least for me, tend to make me anxious after too many days taking it. But for long term use, I think Rhodiala Roses is where it is at. If you can get a prescription, modafonil can boost one's energy and focus without the addiction, anxiety and other side effects of amphetamine stimulants, but depending on your insurance (if you have it) can sometimes be costly.
