Tips on becoming a great writer?

I love to write, I am currently a college student trying to decide between being a journalist or a lawyer. I eventually want to be a full time fiction writer. Any advice?

What is the worst punishment you got in school?

I was studying in Kannada medium till 4th standard. My mother was eager to send me to English medium, because our neighbor’s kids’ were going for English medium. So, everyday my mother used to pressurise my father to get me admitted to English medium. The fee in English medium was so high, still my father somehow agreed to join me to English medium. My mother always pressurised me to call her as “Mummy” and my father as “Daddy”, but I didn't like to call her so, but I was comfortable calling her “Maaa” and my father as “Paaa”. Even today too I call my mother as “Maaa” only.Well, my father somehow arranged money for my admission to English medium. My 5th standard started with English medium classes, I was bit nervous and inferior looking at the fellow mates. My class teacher used to dictate in English, I was failing to match her speed while taking notes. So, my notes used to be blank everytime. One fine day, my class teacher caught me for not taking notes in the class. She opened the cupboard and took out Matchbox and candle. She lit a candle and started pouring hot candle wax on my dorsum or back side of my palm.“Ahhhh! It's hurting” I screamed. It was a terrible punishment she gave to me.Later, my teacher got to know that I was from Kannada medium and newly joined to English medium. She apologized and gave me utmost importance in class. I should thank her for making me learn English.(Your little appreciation and honest feedback makes me write even more. A person who feels appreciated will always do more than expected.)Thanks for reading, Yours,Rakshith Akira ✍

What is the funniest thing ever happend in everyone's school life?

Once we had an English solo song competition in our school. Since my school (Ramjas Public School, Anand Parvat, Delhi) was not a convent or Christian school but a normal public school which had more of desi folks, where we students normally didn't use to listen to English songs. So for that sake my English teacher planned for an english solo song competition as a part of internal assessment when I was in class 9.We were given 3 days to prepare a song of our choice. All of us downloaded and discussed what all songs we were about to sing in the class. While getting busy for preparations I forgot to tell one of my classmate who was absent on the day when the teacher announced for the competition. On the competition day we were revising and singing our songs in front of each other and trying to correct our mistakes in the morning time. The friend who was absent came on the competition day after recovering from illness. He was worried but though he was the naughtiest kid of the class he said I will manage don't worry. When we asked "how?" He responded you just wait and watch. Few of us sang the song. Some stuck while some did it easily. When my friend's turn came he took a pause and started singing "Brazil taa ra ra ra ra raa, taa ra ra ra ra raa brazil" (this was the most played song on weddings and dj at that time) The whole class laughed like mad. The english teacher's face was a mix of humor and anger at that time. She was confused with her feelings. She wanted to laugh and be angry at the same time. This song has only 1 word "brazil" and rest music so it was legally an English song. He got 2 on 10 but we classmates got a memory worth remembering.

What is something that seems to make sense to everybody else but you?

Having children: I mean, 8000000000 people aren't enough already?? Come on!!Bigger population makes the conquer of life more difficult. It also increases the speed of destroying the planet. More than 50 percent of forests and jungles are gone already. I (personally) think it would be very selfish of me to increase the corruption just to satisfy the feeling of holding a sweet creature in arms. I think the downsides weigh more than benefits. Kids take away a whole lot of energy. The amount of general happiness among parents is lower than couples without kids. (Fact or Fiction: Childfree Couples Are Happier than Couples with Kids) We think further generations are going to have a better life but actually, it isn't true, due to the limitation of goods. I don't think our kids will be pleased with what they will face.Sport matches and events: I get it when people do sports for being healthy/in shape. But why on Earth is everyone into sport events?? Why do they exist? What's the point?Currency price, exchange, and worthy metal prices: I'm just not good at figuring them out! :) So, they are expensive because many people want them, and then you buy them to add to the number of the people who want them, and make them even more expensive, so that more people feel the urge to have them?? WTFDesigning house/car/phone with gold and diamonds: That's plain stupid if you ask meSmall talk: If there's something worth saying, let's have a full conversation. But when there's no really important thing to be said, silence is a better choice.Hollywood lifestylePiercings (specially on the nose)Porn: No, I'm not asexual. But to be honest I find porn unpleasant and disgusting. The desire that people have for crowded noisy places: As an introvert person, such places are torturing to me!!Eating garlic, onion, and olive oil!!: Garlic and onion produce chemicals with nasty smell, in order NOT TO BE EATEN!! And guess what? People love them exactly for their nasty chemicals. Olive oil isn't a bad thing but I personally hate the strong taste.Writing the phrase "A2A" on top of requested answers: So what?!Wearing expensive and eating expensive: It’s good to spend on goods, but I don’t like how the world is obsessed with the price tag to feel “good”.

What are some slang terms used among police officers?

The most derogatory terms for the bad guys and citizens who are just pains in the rectum:A.H. = Adam Henry (A-dam H-enry) If you don’t get it…..sometimes you will hear it as “Jack Hole”…..now what starts with an “A” that ends with HOLE ?RICHARD CRANIUM= What starts with a “D” and is a nickname for Richard ? What is the non-medical layman’s term for the Cranium ? Do these clues HEAD you in the right direction ?

Is there a point in reading the same book again and again?

Absolutely. In fact, good books get better with additional readings. You'll notice particularities you never saw the first time around, and your understanding of the concepts will be stronger having already laid the foundation from the first reading. Sometimes when you read a particular book makes all the difference. High school students often bore of classics, but only because they don't yet have the life experience to fully sympathize with the characters in the novel or the situations they're in. 1984 was just an interesting dystopic novel to me at age 13, but at age 20 it was a cautionary tale of the consequences of big government. Similarly, the 4-Hour Work Week was just an inspirational book to me two years ago, but today it's a blueprint for how to free up time. The books themselves didn't change, of course, but I changed - my perspectives, my situation, my environment, my collective life experience, and so on. When it comes to non-fiction books, it doesn't matter how many times you've read the book so much as how much action you've taken as a result of what you learned. Knowledge may be power, but only if you execute upon that knowledge. I'd argue it's better to read and re-read one book slowly and implement what you learn along the way than it is to speed-read through a dozen books just for the sake of increasing your "total books read" number. In summary: Don't be afraid to re-read books!
