Help Me Understand My Eyesight

Help understanding my vision prescription?

My eye doctor must have been in a bad mood because he really didn't explain anything to me today. He only told me I have mixed astigmatism and my prescription says this:

right eye
sphere: +0.50
cylinder: -1.00
axis: 90

left eye
sphere: plano
cylinder: -0.75
axis: 70

Mostly, what does the "plano" mean under the sphere category for my left eye?
What does the axis category mean?

This is the first time I've ever needed vision correction and I don't understand any of this. Thanks for any help!

Help me understand my prescription please?

Your right eye is extremely nearsighted in the sphere, which means you cant see things at a distance at all. But then you have a lot of astigmatism which means your cornea is shaped funky and it distorts vision upclose and far away. I know how u feel though I have a lot of prescription too. So basically you are pretty much blind without glasses or contact lens correction. The ( - ) sign means nearsighted and the +sign means farsighted. DOnt be discouraged though, I have seen some kids that are like a -12.00 and they are only 9 years old. Everyone is different, and inherits different genes for good or bad eyesight..Hope this helps

My eye sight got -1 as it was -2.5. I don't understand. Is it good or bad?

Negative numbers mean near-sightedness; positive numbers mean far-sightedness. The closer you are to 0, the better your vision. If you went from -2.5 to -1.0, that's really good. (My eyes are around -15, sadly.)

Please help me with understanding my eyesight?

Sphere Cylinder Axis
OD +3.00 -4.75 18
OS +3.25 -4.75 172

How close am I to legally blind?
Am I past the point of getting laser eye surgery?
Would I have to wear glass contact lenses?
How bad is my astigmatism?
I want to know, am I nearsighted or far sighted?
Could anyone calculate my visual acuity?

I know not everyone can answer all of these questions, but the ones you can would be very helpful in me understanding my eyes.

Which one is better eyesight, -3.25 or -2.75?

The minus sign indicates that you are myopic (nearsighted). The number says how far away you are from "normal" vision, which would be represented as zero. The farther the number is from zero, the worse the vision and the greater the correction needed to resolve the refractive error.

Moving from 3.25 to 2.75 means that your myopia has reduced by 0.50 diopters, but don't get too excited. This is pretty close to the normal fluctuation for humans. If your eyes were a bit dry, if you were taking a cold medicine, if you ate a lot of salty food, or even having an exam later in the day, you could have affected your error by close to this much.

BTW: A plus sign would have meant that you were hyperopic (farsighted).

FYI: You are in the correctable range for Lasik or similar vision correction surgery.

How do you understand the saying: "Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder"?

To behold is not the same as seeing. It means to contemplate, to gaze upon. When we look at something with attention, a sense of wonder arises within us. We see thousands of sunsets, but we only ever appreciate about ten of them. This is because we take the time to look.It is the act of beholding that gives rise to the perception of beauty.

Can someone help me understand my eyeglass prescription?

Jonas, you are slightly farsighted with a very mild astigmatism. It's nothing to worry about, because you can see without glasses, but they will sharpen things up for you and eliminate any eyestrain you may be having.

Ordering online is simple when you have all the information, but you are missing your PD. So, if you can't call your doctor for it, get a friend to measure you.

You will need a ruler that measures in mm, and while looking at your friend's right eye(it could be the left if you like), have your friend measure from the center of one pupil to the other. That is your PD. For Example: We'll say it's 61mm. To test it, get a piece of paper and measure that distance across, mark with dots, then make holes at the dots, hold it up to your eyes and look through. Do you see through the holes? Well, then it's correct.

OD = Right Eye / Sphere: Plano / Cylinder: +0.75 / Axis: 088
OS = Left Eye / Sphere: +0.25 / Cylinder: +0.25 / Axis 090
Fill the prescription in the boxes provided on the order form.

If the order form requires it transposed, then
OD: Sphere: +0.75 / Cylinder -0.75 / Axis 178 .... Right Eye
OS: Sphere: +0.50 / cylinder -0.25 / Axis 180 .... Left Eye

Understanding my vision prescription?

I work for an ophthalmologist, and order the contacts.

I'll explain this step-by-step. I am assuming these are special order lenses?

BC stands for "base curve," and is based on how flat or curved your eye is -- an 8.9 would be considered a "flat" curvature, and an 8.7 is slightly over a median curvature.

Diameter: around 14.5 is average, and is the width across of the lense.

Sphere (SPH). This indicates the amount of lens power, measured in diopters (D), prescribed to correct nearsightedness or farsightedness. If the number appearing under this heading has a minus sign (–), you are nearsighted; if the number has a plus sign (+) or is not preceded by a plus sign or a minus sign, you are farsighted. The term "sphere" means that the correction for nearsightedness or farsightedness is "spherical," or equal in all meridians of the eye. A +3.00 is a moderately strong prescription.

Cylinder (CYL). This indicates the amount of lens power for astigmatism. Meridians of the eye are determined by superimposing a protractor scale on the eye's front surface. The 90-degree meridian is the vertical meridian of the eye, and the 180-degree meridian is the horizontal meridian.
The term "cylinder" means that this lens power added to correct astigmatism is not spherical, but instead is shaped so one meridian has no added curvature, and the meridian perpendicular to this "no added power" meridian contains the maximum power and lens curvature to correct astigmatism.

The number in the cylinder column may be preceded with a minus sign (for the correction of nearsighted astigmatism) or a plus sign (for farsighted astigmatism). Cylinder power always follows sphere power in an eyeglass prescription. A -5.75 is an EXTREME astigmatism. Assuming it wasn't a typo (i.e., -1.75, moderate astigmatism). Those that are lucky enough to be able to wear contacts with this cylinder often have made-to-order lenses.

Axis. This describes the lens meridian that contains no cylinder power to correct astigmatism. The axis is defined with a number from 1 to 180. The number 90 corresponds to the vertical meridian of the eye, and the number 180 corresponds to the horizontal meridian. The axis is the lens meridian that is 90 degrees away from the meridian that contains the cylinder power.

I hope this helps you understand!!!
