Help Me With This Reading Comprehension Question

A short reading comprehension question?

In theory, Papua New Guinea could be a substantial exporter of tropical crops. In actuality, it is not. The reason is that 97 percent of all land is owned by clans and cannot be bought or sold by individuals, and thus the kinds of realignment of properties that would be necessary to achieve maximum production for export have been impossible to achieve.
The answer to which of the following questions would be most relevant to evaluating the adequacy of the explanation given above?
(A) Who owns the 3 percent of the land in Papua New Guinea that is not owned by clans?
(B) What percentage of Papua New Guinea’s current production of tropical crops is consumed within the country?
(C) How much longer is land ownership by clans expected to remain the prevailing cultural pattern in Papua New Guinea?
(D) Which of the tropical crops currently grown in Papua New Guinea could be exported if there were a surplus for export?
(E) How does Papua New Guinea’s current production capacity for tropical crops compare with the maximum capacity that property realignment would make possible?

What are some tips and hacks for reading comprehension questions?

You must read books, newspapers, journals, magazines etc voraciously to widen your knowledge on the major issues around the world covering all the major disciplines such as sociology, history, economics, science and technology, art and philosophy etc. Try to develop exhaustive knowledge of each of these areas specially economics, sociology, psychology and philosophy. The best way to go about any passage is to comprehend the construction of the passage and focus on keen understanding of the content, words and statements rather than hasty reading. Average speed of reading should be 250 words per minute.Organize and conceptualize your ideas by taking notes of the significant points. Practice retaining important information and detail while reading.Try to grasp the writer`s main idea and key purpose first. While making your choice don`t stick to the one which is agreeable with only a part of the writer`s argument or which over stress the writer`s point. It is recommended that you choose the passages which you are most comfortable with and avoid long cumbersome passages.

I find the GRE Reading Comprehension section (RC) way too difficult and even after practice I am doing them wrong. How can I crack them?

I can understand the problem that you are facing, since I went through the same thing when I was preparing for GRE. I mostly relied on Manhattan Prep since it has a very comprehensive RC section, in which the passages are quite difficult and confusing. However, if you focus properly on the the techniques given in the book and learn to apply them, you should be able to answer RC questions with good accuracy. I had a problem with RC as well but through the strategies given in the book, I could score a 166 on the Verbal Section.First thing to do: Improve your reading speed. Although your current speed is not too bad, you should ideally try to reduce it my at least a minute.Step 2: Don’t spend too long on reading and understanding the long passage. Due to its length, it is quite possible that you will forget what you have read by the time you reach to the questions. Instead, try to categorize each passage according to its theme and mood (this method is explained in Manhattan Prep) and come back to the relevant passage after reading the question.Step 3: Practice figuring out the main idea and theme of the passage. Once you get this, other questions will seem relatively easy. Again, Manhattan Prep gives several strategies for how to approach the main idea of the passage.Step 4: Use the process of elimination. This is a very useful and important strategy for answering RC questions. Except for the correct option, the rest of them have a minor or a major deviation such as extrapolating the idea of the passage, information not mentioned in the passage, direct contrast to the main idea of the passage etc. Approach most of the questions by eliminating the wrong choices, even the ones that you think you can answer straightaway. All of these strategies are from Manhattan Prep. If you follow it more thoroughly, I am sure you will begin to see some improvement.Hope this helps. Let me know if you need further help.

I have taken the reading comprehension test for union pacific and pass what happen next as it has been a month

Did they give you any indication as to how long it would be before they got back to you? Never mind. Stupid question. If they had told you, you wouldn't be asking, right?
I don't think you should do anything unless it has truly been a whole month. Once you have passed that point, I would think you could call back and ask this same question. Explain that you really would rather work for Union Pacific, but that you need to find income. Ask them if they can give you some idea of how long you could reasonably wait to hear back.

How can I solve reading comprehension in the GMAT?

Thanks for A2A.Based on my personal experience, I witnessed a remarkable improvement in my GMAT verbal score through a detailed reading of the question. And this goes for all the three types of questions asked: RC/CR/SC alike. RC, to me, is the simplest of the question types. The popular belief goes that increasing reading speed and devouring on novels and editorials of newspapers is a silver bullet to good score. I have a slight modification to make: these practices are mere facilitators and do not always lead you to a great score. The trick lies in reading the question with full attention and not getting confused with nearly similar answer choices. So how to avoid the confusion among choices, you ask? Eliminate. Out of the five given choices, you know two, or sometimes even three, certainly do not meet the requirements of the asked question. Chuck them altogether. Use your scratch paper wisely for the same. Write A B C D E and strike off the ones that did not fit the bill. Now you are left with two to three answer choices. Act like a picky naggy person know: do not select "broad" choices. For example: if question asks what would a "better" alternative to X? Do NOT chose an answer choice that says: "the best alternative to X is....". Again, pay close attention to the detail. Withal, do not be carried away if an answer choices have words from the passage straight away. In majority of cases, its TRAP!In sum, enhance your focus and stamina as these two attributes are pivotal to your attention paying ability after a grilling, if not daunting, quants section. Hope this helps. All the best!
