Help On Modelling Painting And Gluing

Do all airfix models come with paints and glue.?

some model sets come with paints and glue but you will find that they will cost slightly more then the ones that are without. only a few pounds more, however it will most definetly say that paints and glue are included. =]

How old do you have to be to buy model glue and paint?

I know that you have to be 18 to buy super glue but does that go for model glue as well? I'm 16 and at my grandparents house and I thought building a model would be fun to do, but I dont know if I'm old enought to buy glue and paint.

Does All Revell Models requires you to paint them? OR do they come with decals you can stick?

Just explain to them you are a beginner to modeling and want to start out building easy models and they will set you up with everything you need. There is nothing more satisfying to look at your completed model and think "I built that." Have fun and enjoy your new hobby.

Some model kits such as snap-tite the parts snap together, meaning you put the two parts and gently squeeze them together. If you are just beginning to build models it might be a good idea to start with this type of model kit. That way you don't get discouraged if the part moves after you have glued it in place before the glue dries. There are books that explain model making for beginners. Also magazines like Fine Scale Modelers are a excellent source for modeling tips and instructions.

Other model kits require glue to hold the parts together. They usually look allot better it you paint them. Just remember not to paint them where they glue to the other parts. You have to realize that they have experienced model makers work on the models they show on the Internet and in their catalogs.. Good Luck and have allot of patience, everyone makes mistakes when they first start to build models.

What glue to use on a model car?

I"ve built around 80 model cars by now and here's some good ideas for glue.

Zap from Pacer - This brand is more for the advanced builder, the glue is a cyanoacrylate which is very strong and can come in different formulas.
Zap CA - Super-thin penetrating formula. Works great on most materials
Zap-A-Gap - Fills gaps. Allows 7 to 10 seconds for positioning. Cures in 20 seconds
Slo Zap CA - Thick and strong for high-stress areas.

BSI Adhesives - can be found at HobbyTownUSA, works great for any skill level and also a cyanoarcylate.
Insta-Cure - has a water-thin viscosity and cures in a matter of a few seconds
Insta-Cure + - is a higher viscosity CA for loose fitting joints in which the adhesive must bridge gaps
Maxi-Cure - extra thick CA is the best CA for most plastics
IC-2000 - is a rubber-toughened cyanoacrylate that forms superior shock resistant bonds on non-porous surfaces
Super-Gold and Super-Gold + - are our odorless INSTA-CURE CAs They are non-frosting and take only 2 or 3 seconds longer to bond
Un-Cure - debonder will soften cured CA. If parts are bonded incorrectly or your fingers are stuck together

Aleen's Original Tacky Glue - Found at Wal-Mart and craft stores, use for prefitting parts and washes of in warm water

Testors - Manufacture of hobby supplies like paint, glue, airbrushes, tools, and model kits.
Cement - Red tube. Mainly for beginning builders, can melt some plastics
Non-Toxic Cement - Blue tube. Not that great.
Clear Parts Cement - For windshields and lights, may cause yellowing if too much is used.

Elmers White Glue - Great for prefitting parts, gluing clear pieces, and canbe used as a paint mask.

Do not use super glue, it tends to damage, melt or cause problems with the plastic. Most of these are made for model building or craft work.

How long does it take to build glue-together model cars?

I'm planning an after -school class for next year. I've been researching Revell brand and a couple others. I'd like something that would take 12-14 yr olds about 10 hrs to assemble and paint. I noticed Revell offers Level One, Level Two, etc-I assume the higher the level, the more time and skill needed. I would appreciate replies from those that are experienced in this area. Thank you.

Model ship building -what should I get for a beginner?

My husband really wants to try model ship building because his late grandpa used to do that. So I want to buy him a kit as a surprise, maybe from amazon or something since we live in the middle of nowhere and I can't find a specialist shop :p But I don't know anything about ship building, nor does he, and I know there are different levels. Could anyone recommend me a ship/brand or whatever? I have seen some on amazon for up to 30 dollars, which would be affordable.

Somethings to note; My husband is not the craftiest person I know, he's not skilled when it comes to handling tiny pieces with his hands, so something really easy, but interesting..
And what do we need to buy to be able to make the ship (glue, paint, cutter?)

Thanks for any advice!!

Can paint thinner/remover undo super glue on plastic?

Super glue is actually a plastic... in liquid form, it's an acrylic monomer. It polymerizes (hardens) to a plastic on contact with air. Acetone is the most common solvent for use with this glue. It's not very toxic (it's the main ingredient in nail polish remover), and works well.
Your main problem here is that anything that will dissolve the super glue will most probably dissolve the plastic part (acetone can and will).
Double check the active ingredient (solvent) in any product (goof off) prior to use and be meticulously careful. Additional solvent spilled onto the plastic parts will dissolve them.

How do I get into building model cars, airplanes, etc..?

Ive built model vehicles since i was a kid, the place i get mine? Well most stores used to carry alot of them, but the only ones now ive seen is Wal-mart or Hobby shops. They have some paint supplies at WM - carry both plastic and diecast kits- the hobby stores would have more accessories, like custom wheels, engine kits, ect. To give the vehicles a better finish, i use regular automotive paint in the spray cans.
You can buy an air compresser for models for custom painting .
Plastic kits usually run in the $11 range
Metal kits run in the $15 and up, for larger ones - smaller kits are around $12
Paint ( small enamel bottles) set- around $10
Spray paint- $4 a can
Air compresser - $ 100-200 for a good one
Brushes - $5
Model glue - $5
I used to build some stock and some wild customs - the customs would barely look anything like the kits - dont be confined in how the kit is supposed to be - be creative.

Will modelling clay harden if I brush clear nail polish or watered-down glue over it?

First, many “clays” are referred to as modeling clays (since they can all be shaped/modeled), but only one is *true* modeling clay and that may be the type you’re referring to. Those clays are “plasticine-type” clays —other types of clay these days are polymer clay and epoxy clay (also oil-based), and air-dry clay/s (water-based, which DO “dry” to harden) but there are many-many types of those.Plasticine-type clays never harden so if you put something on top like water-based nail polishes or other clear water-based finishes, which would include diluted permanent white glue, those may dry since they’re thin and exposed to air on at least one side, but they wouldn’t work very well at least because since any flexing of the hardened clear finish would crack/etc. I guess there are some ways to apply multiple coats of various finishes and/or paints that some people use for that purpose but they’re very involved and use only extremely specific materials and application methods. If you have a plasticine-type clay item, you might want to check out some answers I’ve written before about “preserving” them (my avatar is blonde female on blue background):How can I dry out plasticine?and maybe: https://answers.yahoo.com/questi...
