Help With A Level Options For A Future In Medicine

Can you help me pick my A-Level options? (thinking of sciences + maths + one more subject)?

My Predicted Grades Are:
Maths Linear – A*/A
Maths Pair Pilot (Applications + Methods) – A, A
Core Science – A*
Additional Science - A* - I had and still have got the potential to do the single sciences (physics, biology and chemistry) because I got 7A in my Year 9 test but I was stupid at picking my options
English Language – A
English Literature – A
History – A*/A
French – A/B
Drama – B
Religious Studies - A/B
For My A-Level Choice I want to do, these following subjects for sure:
Maths
Chemistry
Biology (still thinking about this)
Is Physics really hard at A-Levels?
But I’m not sure what my 4th subject should be (I want to do a fourth subject, so that I can drop one in my 2nd Year)
I’m considering History (or English Literature) I really like it and enjoy but I can’t stand going through 2 more years of essay writing. Also, I kind of got put off by my Mock Results. In my Y10 exam i got A*, for my Coursework i got A. For my mock i got C, 1 off B. I must admit I didn’t revise at all for the exam and that our teacher hadn’t taught us the two new type of questions.
Is History really hard at A-Level?

If I do Maths, Chemistry, Physics and Biology, would that be too much pressure on me?

I don’t particularly want to go into Medicine or anything but I was reading up on the Oxford Undergraduate courses ( I don’t want to go Oxford, I just think their website is really helpful) and I really like Chemistry, and don’t mind doing Biochemistry. I’m not sure about what I want to do when I grow up.
I want to become a songwriter but that’s just a hobby and like a side job (I’m going to be contacting Song writing contact companies for that as soon as I’m 16) and I want to do something in the Music Industry and have this job in mind but it doesn’t require any qualifications. So with my education I just want to have fun and I really am interested in the sciences.

Give me some advice?

What are some options for a biology student other than medicine after class 12 in India?

Not all students who choose Medical stream as a career option after 12th pcb stream wish to become doctors or dentists. In Indian society, it is an auto assumed scenario. If a child opts for 12th science stream (PCB), society starts to believe and see them as future doctors. Due to this false impression, in most of the cases, students are forced to appear for medical entrance exams even if they don’t wish to. Sometimes, it is misleading as students themselves also start believing that they must become a doctor, or dentist. Lack of professional guidance results into disasters as when students realize that they are just running behind the crowd, they have already lost good amount of time. Here, I am shifting the focus from MBBS and BDS to “OTHER CAREER OPTIONS in LIFE SCIENCES” and listing out some of the possible career options for 12th Science Stream students who like to study life sciences but do not wish to become doctors.Students with Biology, Chemistry, and Physics at 10+2 can opt for career in Life Sciences. If you are choosing career in Life Science, then some of the courses that can be considered for graduation are: 1. Bachelor courses (B. Sc.) in core Life Science subjects, that include specialization in Zoology, Botany, Geology, Microbiology, Immunology, Biochemistry, Biomedical engineering, Genetics or Page on b.sc General.2. Bachelor courses in Applied sciences: Biotechnology, Forensic Sciences and criminology, Bioinformatics3. Bachelor course in Pharmacy (B Pharma)4. Bachelor of Science : Nursing5. Bachelor of Science in Agriculture: Agricultural Meteorology, Agronomy6. Bachelor of Science in Food Technology7. Bachelor of Science in Forestry and Wood Technology8. Bachelor of Science in Industrial Fish and Fisheries9. Bachelor of PhysiotherapyFor more details on College and Course Information you might like to read- Career Options in Life Sciences after 12thJob Prospects and Career Options in Life Sciences

What should I study after I finish ICSE 10th? (My options are ISC, CBSE, PUC And IGCSE)

I did my schooling ,ICSE syllabus 84 % 2014, had lot of interest in continuing ISC,but couldn’t .had no other choice only puc .its totally a shit syllabus even though follows ncert syllabus .I recommend you to choose isc or igcse that would help you various competative exams like iit-jee(mains,advance),medical(neet,aiims,jipmer) ,bitsat, vit, maipal etc and kvpy exam too ! eligibility to write that exam depends on your %(10)why to prefer isc or igcse over ncert syllabusthere is a lot more extra things covered in the syllabus ( in total 11,12 isc or igcse) its like preparation to advance level (jee) ,ncert(puc, cbse) syllabus deals only to the mains level it depends on your interst to purse B.TECH(COMPUTER) from NIT LEVEL or IIT,GIFT,IIIT LEVEL( B.TECH COLLEGES) or any other PRIVATE reputed college like bmsce ,rv etc.PROBABLY you would have a glimpse over knowledge on programing if and if your 10 th subject is COMPUTER APPLICATION OR COMPUTER SCIENCE(IN ICSE SYLLABUS) THING OVER IT before its too late.if interested in medical it totally doesn’t depend on your score(% in 10 or 12 except if you score eligibility % ,but in case of engineering or commerce stream your % of 10 12 plays a big role in every matter of your life example for campus selection your % in engineering , 85 % is the minimum % required to write INDIAN B GRADE EXAM ,RBI(RESERVE BANK OF INDIA ) ,TO get into any IIM totally depends on your% including cat exam %,there are many people who proved futile to make into any IIM even scored 99.25% IN CAT that's all due to there previous exam(10,12) %.but there is a lot of competition in INDIA for mbbs,or bds course you did not specify whether interested in mbbs or bds ( try to be more specific *) there is only 53330 mbbs seats including NRI, in India mci approved medical colleges. THERE IS A LOT OF STUDENTS TO WHO DROP OUT FOR MEDICAL EVERY YEAR !

What is Biomedicine?

I've just got an offer from a University to study Biomedicine. But I'm not really clear about what is Biomedicine? What it does?Research? What will I become after I graduate?

My parents are choosing my A-Level subjects for me! Help!?

You need to stand as firm as you can. It is a disaster for parents to choose subjects for their kids. My Dad chose sciences for me when I wanted to do Arts. The result was that I did ok in the subjects but not brilliant. I didn't go to Uni and then went back to College to do Arts & Humanities at A level before going to Uni finally at 25 to study History as I wanted to all along!

Your Mum probably thinks you'll have a better career if you do things her way, and earn more money. You'll bring prestige on the family by being a Dr BUT if your heart isn't in it you run the risk of not doing as well as you might. Places for medicine in the UK are over subscribed and you would need excellent A level results and GCSEs at A and good experience of volunteering etc.

So keep talking - try not to get angry - keep your Dad onside and try and persuade your Mum.

As a last resort talk to your school and explain the situation. I'm sure they will be sympathetic to you.

Good luck.

Can anyone suggest any informative, yet simple books on medicine?

Hey! I'm in year 11 too doing exactly the same subjects as you for A level bar maths, though im thinking of either doing maths or physics as an AS when I'm in year 13 as i hate both the subjects but will probably need them for a competitive entry into medicine.. yep I wanna do medicine too :D

It sounds silly but medical dramas like Holby City, Casualty etc. and actual factual documentary style medical programmes reinforced my desire to be a doctor! So maybe watching some of them is quite useful instead of just reading, as even the dramas include proper terminology and procedures.

I also found that reading medical journals such as 'The Lancet' and 'BMJ' were extremely interesting and gave a good insight into possible future medical techniques/methods, theories etc. that we may be using in the future if we are fortunate enough to finally become doctors :)

I haven't actually read from any actual books yet, I've just been doing a lot of internet surfing regarding terminology which then stemmed on to reading about procedures and stuff - so interesting i love it! However I spoke to a friend in year 13 a few months back who is going off to uni next year to study medicine, and she did reccommend two books to me, although they were concerning interviews at uni. So I'll include this information anyway just if you were interested - if you apply to either of these 4 uni's then you will have to sit the BMAT entrance exam: UCL, Imperial, Cambridge and Oxford. In the exam you are asked questions on maths and science but there is also an english paper where you will have to write about a given topic, which will be of course medically related. But anyway, to help with the writing, my friend suggested this reading material for it - 'medical ethics a very short introduction' by Tony Hope. & also "Philosphy of science, a very short introduction " by Samir Okasha. She said these were really easy to read and that 90% of the topic questions in the exam were lifted from the text!

Sorry this is so long winded for such a simple question, but I hope this helps!!

IB choices for medicine advie please?

Hi, fellow IB-er :)
I think you should definitely take Chemistry and Biology HL's - they are necessary for most of medicine universities. Just study hard and smart and everything's going to be alright.
Also, I believe you should take Chinese on a Higher Level - first of all, it will be more useful in your future than B&M, if you want to be a doctor and also language are not that hard in IB.
Also, definitely take Mathematic Studies SL - this will be MUCH easier thus will increase your overall grade. You should always take subjects that are required and the easiest subjects possible.
So, if I were you my choices would be:
HL Chemistry, Biology, Language B Chinese
SL Mathematic Studies, English Lit A1, B&M
Finally, you should really consider do you want to go to IB? It definitely will not boost your grades, you might get higher grades in other curriculums and IB doesn't really prepare for medicine universities very well -as you probably know, biology is the essential high school subject for a doctor and biology is very weak in IB. Anyway, good luck in your choices.

Please help me with this Chemistry, Only school level? Multiple choice?

Hi all, I am on my Mum's account asking this. I am hoping to get into Medicine like she did. Anyway, yeah don't ask she's forgotten it all apparently.
