Algebra equations need help plz

John's rate (x):
x + 1/3x = $60
3/3x + 1/3x = $60
4/3x = $60
x = $60(3/4)
x = $45

Dennis' rate:
= 1/3($45)
= $15

Answer: $15 is Dennis' rate per hour.

Help with algebra 1-2 math questions???

we are doing system of equations in algebra 1-2 and i have 2 questions that i didnt understand-

1) The ratio of boys to girls in a school is about 3 to 5. There are about 800 students in the school. How many are boys? how many are girls?

2) Niki has 8 coins worth 1.40. Some of the coins are nickels and some are quarters. How many of each coin does Niki have?

[A] 4 quarters and 4 nickels [B] 6 quarters and 2 nickels
[C] 2 quarters and 6 nickels [D] 3 quarters and 5 nickels
[E] 5 quarters and 3 nickels

can you please do them in the format of system of equations AND tell me how you do it??? thank you :)

May you please help me with this algebra equation?

Hey! I've completed my whole algebra worksheet by myself but I'm having troubles with this one equation...
-4/7 p = -8

If you could please show me how to do it step by step so I could learn, that would be great! Thank you so much!

Help algebra linear equation?

First, I will assume simple interest, over a 1 year period.

There are two solutions. One where the amount invested at 4% earned $1600 more, and one where the amount invested at 6% earned more. To solve either way, you will need two equations. For both situations, one equation will be:

x + y = 70000

since the total investment is $70,000.

Let's start with the first case, where the amount invested at 4% earns $1600 more than the amount invested at 6%. The 2 equations are.

1) .04x - .06x = 1600
2) x + y = 70000

First, multiply the second equation by .04, so we can subtract the 2 equations (the Subtraction method).

1) .04x - .06y = 1600
2) .04x + .04y = 2800

Subtracting the two equations, we get:

-.1y = -1200, which simplifies to: y = 12000

Substituting that into the original second equation, we find that x = 58000.

So, the interest earned by $58000 at 4% = $2320,
and the interest earned by $12000 at 6% = $720,
which is a difference of $1600!

**************************************...

Now the second case, where the amount invested at 6% earns $1600 more than the amount invested at 4%. The 2 equations are.

1) .06x - .04x = 1600
2) x + y = 70000

First, multiply the second equation by .06, so we can subtract the 2 equations (the Subtraction method).

1) .06x - .04y = 1600
2) .06x + .06y = 4200

Subtracting the two equations, we get:

-.1y = -2600, which simplifies to: y = 26000

Substituting that into the original second equation, we find that x = 44000.

So, the interest earned by $44000 at 6% = $2640,
and the interest earned by $26000 at 4% = $1040,
which is, again, a difference of $1600!

Hope this helps!

Finite Math..Algebra Equation Help Needed???

I am having problems solving two equations. When I solve them they do not match with the answers in the answers document I have. Here are the equations and the solution.

7^(2x) = 823,543 =====> answer is x = 3.5

500 = 600 - 600e^(-0.4x) ======> answer is x = 4.474

Can someone help me get to these answers... I'm lost??

Best answer gets 5 stars ASAP!!!

Need help with Algebra Rational Equations and Rational Expressions?

Here are a few.

1) Find all numbers for which the rational expression is undefined .
4/v - 8

You can't divide by zero.
Set the denominator equal to zero to find where the expression is undefined.
The denominator is just v, so v = 0 is where the expression is undefined.

If you meant 4/(v-8), then the denominator is v-8.
v-8 = 0 means v = 8, so the expression is undefined when v = 8.

I hope you see the DIFFERENCE between 4/v - 8 and 4/(v-8).

2.) Divide and simplify
c + 6/c - 7 / 2c + 12/c - 1

With no parentheses, your expression is difficult to interpret.
What are the denominators? numerators?

3.) Solve
z - 1/z - 4 = 3/z - 4

Again, you don't have parentheses, but I THINK you mean
(z-1)/(z-4) = 3/(z-4) ....... but I am not 100% sure.

You could also mean z - 1/(z-4) = 3/(z-4).
Or possibly something else.

I'll assume you mean (z-1)/(z-4) = 3/(z-4).
Since the denominators are equal, you can just drop them.
z - 1 = 3
Add 1 to each side.
z = 4
Then go back to the original equation to see if this solution makes sense.
If you plug in z=4, then you will be dividing by zero. Therefore, there is no solution.

4.) Find the LCM of 7(x - 2) and 14(x - 2)
The LCM is 14(x-2).

5.)Solve
x/x + 7 - 7/x - 7 = x^2 + 49/x^2 - 49

Still no parentheses, but let's assume you mean
x/(x+7) - 7/(x-7) = (x^2+49)/(x^2-49)

Note that x^2-49 = (x-7)(x+7).
Multiply both sides by (x-7)(x+7).

x(x-7) - 7(x+7) = x^2 +49
x^2 -7x -7x -49 = x^2 +49
-14x - 49 = 49
-14x = 98
x = -7

Does this solution work in the original equation?
I'll let you determine that.

18.) Add and simplify if possible
4b/5b - 10 + 9b/10b - 20

I'll assume you mean 4b/(5b-10) + 9b/(10b-20).

Factor the denominators.
= 4b/[5(b-2)] + 9b/[10(b-2)]

The common denominator will be 10(b-2).
= 8b/[10(b-2)] + 9b/[10(b-2)]
= 17b/[10(b-2)]

I'll also let you attempt the rest. And please use parentheses the next time. When you have a fraction, it is best to place parentheses around the numerator and the denominator when you have multiple terms.

I need help on how to understand algebraic rule of an equation?

To find the rule:Step 1:  Find slope, m, using formula for slope: (Y-y)/(X-x).Take 2 points,(0,0) & (20,10) and plug them into formula: (10-0)/(20-0)=10/20 = 1/2Step 2: Find b , using formula y = mx+bTake m=1/2 and one point, (0,0) and put them in formula:0 = 1/2(0) + b --> 0 = bSo b= 0, m= 1/2.  Plug these into y=mx+b. y = (1/2)x     THAT IS THE RULE. ---Fill in the table:For the first y value solve y = (1/2)(-4) --> y = -2For the next x value solve 5 = (1/2)x      --> x = 10You try the rest....If you have trouble comment.  x should always be twice y.
