This is a rather deceptively simple question.The immediate step is for you to stop reading those books - apparently they are not right for you.Be mindful that the books are published to make a profit, and they try to cast the net wide enough to appeal to a larger audience (aka more money), and this does not mean that the solutions they propose will be right for you.The only individualized approach would be to hire a psychologist (licensed and trained one) and have this person help you, however you had not indicated that this is an available path.If you prefer to stick to self-help books, know that you don't need to eat a whole apple to know that it's bad: if you read a book and it does not resonate with you, you can put it down and take up another book.The temporary effect you had cited - a state of peace and joy which then dissipates - means that you had not properly diagnosed yourself and wrong cure could be worse than the malady itself.If you look at all the books within the self-help section (either the book store or the library or on Amazon), it's simply endless and you will need a couple of lifetimes to read them all, so the only option is to zero in on books which have been recommended by others (using their experience/mistakes to your benefit).Since you sound young enough, I would recommend one book to you for the time being (and you're most welcome to get a library copy of it since I don't benefit from this recommendation in any way: "10 secrets for success and inner peace" by Dr Wayne Dyer).It's nice and short, so even if you don't like it, it will cost you maybe 1 day of reading. Be prepared to reflect on your life a lot and be prepared to experience a lot of plain truths which many lack in their life.I do not recommend any other books by this author - this one book actually contains everything that he's talked about in the next 10 books after this one: this particular book was not the commercial success he envisioned, and it feels almost that he's taken each of those 10 life lessons and spread them out across many books in a repackaged form.Well, I value brevity, so this book is the only one I've been reading many times over the last 7 years.(If or when you become a parent, there's only one book you need for that as well, so keep in touch and I will share that when the time comes).

Sorry to break your bubble, but there is no such thing as passion. And I am telling you this through my experiences. If you take a little risk, get out of your comfort zone and try out things that you have never done in your life, you will see that everything is passion.There is no such thing encoded into your genes, or any purpose meant to be fulfilled granted by the Creator, though i don’t believe in God.So, when everything seems to be more exciting,more purposeful than the other, how do you really chose? I mean life is too short to do everything. Passions are mutually exclusive. If you choose one or more, you still can’t do other so many things that you could have.Still you gotta choose to survive. Here are some observations that I have made -Try out as many things as possible. But if you are in your late twenties, you are already too late for it.Chances are you are gonna become the jack of all trades.Find one thing that you ‘really’ love. As for me, I haven’t figured it out yet.If you see most successful people, they really never cared about their passion. They just tried those things that came in their way.Out of all three, the last one seems to be most appropriate way if you really want to become a master keeping in mind the uncertainty of life. See what you have been through all your life, it may be about making a social impact, becoming a writer, painter,scientist,poet,designer,a politician why not? a true politician, actor, pilot,army soldier,whatever.It’s as simple as that. If it’s not it maybe because the number of options are ever increasing.For example, consider technology, there are new things being discovered everyday, there are hundreds of thing you can choose from.But it’s not how it works.
