Help With My Singing Voice

Can anyone help me with my singing voice?

You sound like you have the same problem I used to have and my little sister has right now. And what solved it for me was doing some vocal training with this CD set called Singing Success. It's amazing, it totally evened out my voice and added about an octave of range and completely got rid of the nasals. It's kind of on the expensive side, but if you compare that to getting voice lessons, you end up saving money over time. Just look into it. If you're willing to put the effort in, it will make a huge difference in your voice:

Warm salt water helps a singing voice?

Yes and no. Gargling with warm salt water is a temporary fix if your throat is irritated. However, the effects will not last long. Not only that, the salt will not get rid of the sore feeling like other home remedies can.

If you want a liquid to help your singing voice, try Throat Coat. It is a tea that is specifically made for vocalists and public speakers. It lacks huge amounts of caffeine, and the herbs in the tea has a natural coating that soothes the area. Also, consider drinking any warm liquids with honey. That is a natural remedy that has worked for singers who are under the weather. Also, not talking so much is a quicker way to vocal health. I know it seems simple, but just not talking for a whole day unless it is completely urgent can turn your vocals around by at least 60 to 70 percent.

Another disgusting remedy that is horrible to taste but works is cayenne pepper and honey in warm water. It is horrible, but the cayanne pepper works like an antibiotic. When I am in a total vocal bind, I drink this before going on stage.

Just take it easy. The salt water will not harm you, but I think the Throat Coat and honey will do you more justice. Not talking unless totally neccassary will do even more for you if you have a sore throat. :)

How long should i rest my singing voice?

Ok. You are defiantly "pushing" your voice too hard when you are singing. Probably singing "on your chords", "from the throat" and not using proper breath support. Am I making sense?

When you breathe in your stomach should expand (not your chest). Take that air from your stomach and by using your muscles down there work on keeping the air in your stomach while you are singing. It obviously will escape but you want it to escape slowly.

As for resting your voice
1. Try not to talk or whisper on your days off.
2. If you have to talk try and speak at a higher pitch. I know this may seem strange but trust me.

Maybe you could consider taking some lessons from a voice teacher. They can expand much more on what I have said and keep checking to make sure everything is working properly.

Can losing weight help improve your singing voice?

The only difference might be that if you lost weight via exercising you probably develop better breath support... which is actually a pretty big difference because that's one of the most important things about singing. Exercise can lead not only to being able to sing longer phrases, but to better ability to hit high notes and make them sound pretty. And in general, the better your air support, the better your sound will be. That said, support by itself can be developed without exercise but you'll have more air to use.

Does throwing up hurt my singing voice?

why? do you plan of throwing up regularly before you sing?

Will drinking hot water help control my singing voice?

Ask any music studio or person who gives singing lessons and they will tell you - room temperature water is the best - not hot, or cold, but room temp. That's the best thing for your vocal chords - Another tip, right before you're about to sing, put a fisherman's friend (cough drop) in your mouth - they taste awful, but they clear your throat and sinus's fast and effectively

Will vegetable oil help your sing voice?

I am a professional singer. I actually use olive oil as a lubricator. Or straight up honey. Water, I'll tell you, may help in general or short term, but if you suffer from a case of nervous dry throat before performing, it won't do ANYTHING. I've learned this from many performances. The largest crowd I've performed in front of is 1,800 people. Vegetable oil I've never tried, I'm not too sure of.. It can't hurt though.

Is lipton green tea good for your singing voice

Lipton green tea is not the best kind of tea for your voice, but it is not horrible either. Try hot teas especially, and lots of water, they help unclog the mucus on your vocal cords, creating a purer sound. Celestial Seasoning Imperial White Peach White Tea does wonders. Also, try avoiding dairy products and soda before you sing, and in general if possible.

Yes, you are supposed to sing from your diaphragm. That is your technical breathing muscle, located right below the rib cage. When you breathe in, your diaphragm should go out. As you release air through singing, it should come back in. This is something you have to train yourself to do; we are very used to using our lungs to breathe which is not correct while singing. (If your shoulders raise when you take a breath you are breathing from your lungs rather than your diaphragm.) Try laying on the ground with a text book on your stomach. As you inhale, watch the book raise, and as you exhale watch it fall. Try doing this for 5-15 minutes consistently and you will see a difference in your breathing and the tone of your voice.

The best thing you can do to become a better singer is get formal training. Your vocal coach could identify what your problem areas are and help you overcome them. I just started formally taking lessons about 2 months ago, and it has worked miracles already! It will also help save your voice over the long haul...singing the wrong way can be very damaging.

Well, I hope that helps. =) You can succeed in your singing dreams, just work hard and if at all possible take lessons!
