How do I do my taxes?
Like Jessica Gray, I have filed my own taxes every year since I first had a job. The basic design of the forms tends to stay the same over the years, so you get used to them.I had an income tax class in law school, where some of the general principles of interpretation were discussed.I also had a class in basic accounting in undergraduate school, though I don’t keep books in quite the same form.But mostly I figure my taxes using the instructions to the relevant forms that are provided by the IRS. They’re pretty comprehensive, they’re all easily accessible on the IRS’ web site, and for me they’ve been more than adequate. (Except the ones for Form 4562. Form 4562 is the tenth circle of Hell.) There are also “IRS Publications” that give pointers on more complex topics, and if worse comes to worst, I’ll break out the regulations and read those. That’s quite rare for my own tax return, but occasionally I encounter a client who needs some direction with regard to a strange issue.If I had something more complicated than a sole proprietorship where I use a straight-up cash accounting method, I might seek the assistance of someone who is in fact an expert in the matter.
Do i need to file taxes if i live with my parents?
First off, if you were still 18 as of Dec 31, 2010, your parents CAN claim you as a dependent. The cutoff if you are not a full-time student is your 19th birthday, not your 18th as you seem to think. There's little chance that you provided more than half of your own support for the entire year out of your $4,500 income, so you are still a dependent. The filing requirement for a dependent with wage income is $5,700. Since you earned less than that, you are not required to file a return. However if there is any dollar amount in box 2 of your W-2 you must file a return to have that refunded to you. The FICA taxes in boxes 4 and 6 are not refundable.
