Hey Austrians Are There Any Canadian Things That Come Across Your Mind

What do austrians look like?

Hi there.
I spent the month of August in Salzburg Austria in August 2008. I found the people conservative in dress and well turned out, not disheveled. I found them polite, approachable and protective. I was travelling on my own on this trip. I found the men quite attractive and even made a male friend in Salzburg. Austrian men are known as being a bit free and easy...not all of them before I angry emails back but they are not afraid to flirt and sweep you off your feet. Think Arnold, govenor of California, Maria Klaus Brandeur and the actor from Inglorious Basterds mentioned here. I would agree that he did have something quite austrian about him and quite sexy. Good luck.

Are Americans and Canadians the same people?

We are separate, but very similar, nations. I think “Germany/Austria” is the closest example of our similarity, though I only say that based off other people’s opinions of those two countries. The biggest difference in culture? Some comedian (I tried to google it, but could not find him again) said it best:“Americans are like the rebellious child, who, when he moved out of the house, caused a lot of screaming, yelling, and throwing of things, the slamming of doors and squealing of tires. Canadians are like that easy going child that never caused any waves, and then one day he said “hey mom and dad, I’m going out for coffee” and just never came back home.”The end result is kind of similar, but the manner of getting there was drastically different. This difference in how our countries were formed affects our outlooks still to this day. Canadians tend to have a more positively outlook on government and see government programs as cooperation between the people. Americans tend to have a more negative outlook on government, and see government programs as a necessary evil to be avoided if at all possible. This is a grand stereotype, but all stereotypes are based on some truth. To this day, my Canadian wife - who usually hates TMI and oversharing - when confronted by law-enforcement, suddenly becomes this authority-trusting geyser of information and will divulge any personal data to any question they ask of her. I, on the other hand - who usually struggle with keeping my personal information to myself - suddenly become an anti-authoritarian skeptic that has the defensive attitude of “you better have a justifiable reason for questioning one of your fellow individual citizens… I probably don’t have to answer any of your questions!”In conclusion, though, we probably see ourselves as a lot more distinct than a casual outside observer. Yes, we’re two separate nations with different political systems and slightly different political attitudes, but if you were to magically beam a foreigner into an average Canadian or American Walmart, McDonald’s, KFC, or Chevy dealership, it would take them awhile to figure out which country they had been beamed into. Until someone bumped into them and said, “Oh, sorry about that.”

Is there racism (overt or otherwise) against Asians in Germany?

We were sober group of 3 south Asian people, finely dressed with suit, were denied entry into Climax institutes discotheque in Stuttgart.Conversation between the bouncer outside the club and us:Me: Hi Good evening, we are group of 3 people would like to get an entry into your discotheque. What's the entrance fee?Bouncer: What? No you aren't allowed, you need reservation.Me: But when I called you guys for reservation, you mentioned that you can just pay the entrance fee and get an entry.Bouncer: No, I don't care. When I say I can't allow you, I won't. Period. Now go away.Me: Thank you, have a good night. After few seconds, 3 drunk fair skinned guys approached us asking what happened? Aren't they allowing anyone inside? My friend: No they didn't. Probably reservation is needed. Then we waited and watched those guys talking to the bouncers, though under dressed getting entry into that discotheque without any hassle. It was really a disappointing day for us and we spent rest of the new year's Eve being depressed.Edit 1: Below are the screenshots I have which are the replies from the CEO of Climax institutes after I wrote a review in google and fb. This is how unprofessional and unethical they are. This would be enough proof of their behavior.

Which is better Austria or Germany for living and jobs?

Climate : GermanyGermany being the larger country has a more varied climate. Though both countries in general have cold and often snowy winters and warm, sometimes hot summers.Austria can have more intense heat with temperatures reaching 30c+ more often. This would be a benefit but most of Germany has more pleasant heat rather than intense, therefore I would rather Germany, especially as Austria can get intense thunderstorms after this heat and is in general wetter. If you like milder winters then try the far south west of Germany or far south east of Austria, though both of those places do get frost and snow occasionally. If you like snowier winters then Eastern or Southern Germany. Unless you are planning to live on high ground in Austria in which expect a lot of snow. Vienna and North Western Germany still get snow but not as much.SafetyBoth countries are safe. Both countries have few murders, rapes and crimes in general.Germany’s murder rate is 0.9, one of the lowest in the world.Austria’s murder rate is even lower at 0.5.That said, I have never felt unsafe in either country and most Germans and Austrians are not weary or worried about crime.List of countries by intentional homicide rateCost of Living = DrawCost of Living in ViennaVienna is regarded as one of the most expensive capitals in the world.Germany is a bit expensive by global standards, but it varies city to city.Vienna has a cost of living index of 78Graz = 82Linz = 89Berlin = 74Hamburg = 80Munich = 84Cologne = 73Frankfurt = 81The Data shows Germany is cheaper but this is only for certain cities as the website never had information for any more Austrian cities.Housing = GermanyAn Average monthly rent for an Austrian house/apartment costs 54% of the monthly income. An Average monthly rent for a Berlin house/apartment costs 45% of the monthly incomeProperty Prices in GermanyEmployment = Both are good right now with great economies so drawCountryside : Draw. How much anti-black racism occurs in Vienna, Austria?

I wrote the question a few weeks ago because I was planning to go to Vienna, and I actually got scared when I read the report mentioned in Thomas Sykora's answer! Most of the stories in that report are terrifying, yet the editorial seems to talk about it in such a matter of fact way. For example, that a person getting pushed onto the metro tracks and the perpetrator getting a slap on the wrist is "a situation many people have already witnessed" and that the authorities have a "'head-in-the-sand' mentality" which "seems to be set in stone." I almost felt like backing out of the whole trip! I didn't want to get pushed on the train tracks!!!Nevertheless, I spent a week in Vienna, and in general I felt welcomed. There were some times when I felt that people may have had a bias against me. On the metro, people seemed uncomfortable with my presence, and would zip their purse upon noticing me or stare me down for the whole trip. One of the unfortunate things about being black is that people sometimes automatically find you suspicious, so you try to look less suspicious, but it ends up making you look guilty (although you've done nothing), and I think that happened to me many times. Also there was one time when some men were very obviously talking and laughing about me, but I don't speak German, so I don't know what it was about. Most of the time I felt like one of the crowd. I never felt unsafe. I actually felt ridiculously safe, to the point where I was confident enough to move around by myself at night instead of taking taxis. People were friendly to me. I experienced excellent service at almost every business I went to. I have a lot of nice things to say about Vienna, but I was only there for one week, and I still wonder how black people there feel about their general day to day experiences.

Guns and Firearms: How dangerous are modern air rifles?

It depends on the projectile and pressure. Most modern airguns are small-caliber and moderate velocity, similar in performance to a .22 Long Rifle in power- a 5.5mm, 3gr conical lead bullet travelling approximately 400m/sec. Lethal, potentially, but not tremendously damaging without hitting something vital. However, there are larger caliber airguns that fire heavier projectiles. The famous Austrian Windbusche repeater was 13mm, or .51 caliber. Modern hunting-type airguns are available in a plethora of calibers, and while not as popular as cartridge firearms, still quite viable as hunting rifles under appropriate circumstances- they were extremely popular at the turn of the century for poachers due to a relatively quiet discharge, and are frequently used for pest and small game hunting worldwide, and models in larger calibers can be used to take deer and boar quite effectively. However, mechanically, the pneumatic rifle holds two distinct disadvantages to a cartridge firearm- they're relatively limited in terms of power due to the speed and pressure at which compressed gas can be discharged, and they're mechanically complex compared to a cartridge firearm, with more wear-prone components such as seals and valves.Basically, the advent of cartridge firearms using smokeless powder simply evolved the platform to be more robust and powerful than the airgun by a wide enough margin there's been little interest in them since.
