Can house plants remove radon from the air? Which ones are the best at it?

You’ve gotten some good information from fellow Quorans.I would add:It is possible that some plants may temporarily sequester radon, but it is still there, in your environment, emitting radiation. The good news is that radon, a gas, is a short-lived breakdown product of other radioactive elements. The bad news is that it breaks down into other radioactive substances. The other bad news is that it indicates the presence of nasty elements like thorium and uranium—somewhere fairly close—these however, are not gaseous, so uptake by potted houseplants is not in the equation. Also, radon presence doesn’t mean you have uranium or thorium in your garden soil.If you have radon, a radon-specific air filtration system is the primary solution. That or moving to a radon-free area.

Has anyone ever worked at a plant nursery?

I've worked at a garden center for the last 25 years. I started out as a cashier with no plant knowledge, but through self study, and on the job experience have become a "Certified Nursery Professional".

I love what I do, being around plants and helping the customers.. there is always something new to learn even after all this time.

That being said there can be ups and downs... sometimes in spring it gets so busy you can barely get time to eat lunch... I've had customers follow me when I try to take a bathroom break! Cashiering, which I still have to do on occasion, can get pretty mind numbing... and some customers who were happy to spend 2 hours picking out their plants just about blow a fuse it they have to wait longer than 2 minutes to check out. But I've found over the years if you smile, and acknowledge the folks waiting in line with a "Hi folks... little busy today... get to you soon!" its not so bad.

So anyway, if you go into it with a good attitude, ask for help when you need it, and be willing to go find help for a customer if you can't answer their question. Use your down time to read the reference books.. pick the brains of the nursery people... learn as much as you can and I think you'll enjoy your time there.

What herb can I plant in my garden to keep cats out?

As a beekeeper, I'd suggest trying lavender as a border plant.  The bee population (as well as other pollinators and hummingbirds) will be very happy that you've done this.  And cats are reported to steer clear of the plant due to the scent.  There are varieties large and compact of lavender and it is a perrenial plant so that reduces the labor involved considerably. That said, there are plants that might discourage cats from visiting gardens - at least I've seen folks claiming that they work (Rue, for example), but honestly I've found that unless I've got a physical barrier in place, they've just meander over where the plant isn't and dug, lay, sprayed or shat over there.Chicken wire might be a way to keep them out (I like the scientific name that Karen Tiede uses for it. ;-) ) but I've got barn cats that will climb it easily.  My one barn cat would climb a six foot high fence of it to get into the hen house in bad weather - the hens don't mind her and she's a good mouser.  But the other cats aren't so inclined and don't bother climbing it.My one cat was found of sleeping in the lettuce table and I found her sleeping among the garlic in the hoop house on occasion too.  I sprayed her with the hose when I found her doing that and I think she got the message - or likely just does it when she knows I'm not around.  Sneaky feline.Yeah, I'd recommend lavender.  It smells nice (to humans), it is a perrenial and it can be propagated by cuttings.  I suppose one can grow it from seed but I imagine it might be difficult to do so.And if it keeps the pesky cats out, bonus points!

I'm planting oleanders as a wind break how far apart should I plant them?

No closer than 4' and no farther apart than 8'. Split the difference with 6'. Give ample water the first year and fertilize with 20-20-20 in the fall. You will be well on your way to a good wind break by next year. However, don' t expect height to exceed 6' to 8'.
