What are some good Time Management Habits?

I’m going to respond to this question literally - what are the SKILLS - related to time management, rather than the techniques or approaches to use for effective time management. Hopefully this will add a new perspective to the conversation.Like almost anything else, there are skills to effective time management which come more naturally to some than others. Various techniques and approaches to time management will help you develop these skills, but it’s useful to think about other ways you apply or grow these skills, since they are transferable. You might find that you already have these skills but haven’t applied them to time management. And with a little intention, you can quickly and successfully improve your time management.Skill 1: PlanningManaging your time is almost impossible if you don’t know what you need to do and how much time you have to do it. Strong planning skills enable you to list all the items you need to complete and in what order, how much time you expect each to take, what resources you’ll need. This way, you’ll minimize surprises, roadblocks and detours.Skill 2: OrganizationPart of time management is keeping track of all the moving pieces so you’re doing the right work at the right time. This means staying organized by utilizing systems for managing and tracking tasks as well as your calendar.Skill 3: Action OrientationKnowing what you need to do and doing it are two different things. An action orientation helps you minimize procrastination and do the things you need to do. In my experience, there is much time wasted simply by avoiding the things we need to do. Jumping into work is a mindset as much as a skill.Skill 4: PerseveranceThis might seem like an odd skill to list, but after years of trying new approaches, techniques, systems, software, and gimmicks to improve my own time management, I’ve learned that sticking with a system even when it’s novelty or initial impact has worn off is essential to building the habits for effective time management. Time management is an ongoing practice that takes dedication and perseverance. There are likely other skills that support time management, but these are the ones I find to be most critical. If you find this helpful, I’ve written more about time management and other productivity practices at www.mamieks.com/blog and Blog - Meeteor

How does one go about getting a job in the foreign service?

The State department is a notoriously "old boy network" of civil servants. They recruit at all the Ivy league universities and interview those who score highly on their test of language and culture. Foreign languages fluency helps, especially if it is Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Ruissian or Swahili or some language other than Spanish or French, Italian or German.

State is a clubby life of actual and imagined privledge.

Like all USA institutions, they try to project an image of fairness but when tested - they fail the decency test. The edge is to have the money and education not to need the job...then you stand a good chance of being selected.

Why will most people not become millionaires?

There are three reasons why most people will not become millionaires. First, given the amount of wealth in the world, it is literally impossible for the majority of the 7.53B people on the planet to become millionaires. So, let me respond to a more restrictive question: Why will most people who want to become millionaires, not become millionaires? To put it simply, most people are not equipped to succeed in the primarily capitalistic, winner take all, food fight that forms the economy throughout the developed world. To be really successful in today’s economic world takes, as others have noted, the right mindset, a good education, and considerable luck. I would also add, good looks, successful parents, and white maleness. Women, minorities, poor people, ugly people, disabled people, gay and transgender people, all face nearly insurmountable hurdles in their attempts to become rich. People born in developing countries have no chance at all, with so few exceptions as to be moot. Finally, most people have little interest in becoming millionaires. Oh sure, they may daydream about how nice it would be not to have to work, but in their real lives, most people are satisfied to do their work and earn a fair wage, then go home to their families, which are the centers of their lives. They go to church and ball games, picnics with friends and family, take their dogs for a walk, play with their kids, enjoy a few beers after work before the weekend, mow their grass, take the kids swimming, hug their wives and husbands, tuck their kids in at night, and consider themselves fortunate to have what they have.To read all the blather about getting rich that permeates our society, which invariable disdains lives lived in balance and harmony, you could not be blamed for concluding that most people are lazy, unfocused, losers. The very premise of this question suggests that there is something wrong with everyone who does not achieve, or at least aspire to wealth. In my experience, one can live to work, or one can work to live. I believe we need more of the latter.Be well…and do the right thing.Tom

Is having no ego a bad thing? If so, why?

If you've a little, yes, in today's world we need a little ego.“If you met an asshole today, then he is an asshole,if you met assholes all day then you're an asshole”But you must know the difference between having a good ego, and having a damaging egoI would describe good ego as knowing your worth, mainting self respect and not being available. This doesn't mean you show off, or always say no to people or consider yourself high or mighty but rather i mean that you should be able to stand up for yourself and keep yourself a priority (ik this isn't exactly egositc but people generally look at people with confidence and whose priority is themselves as egostic)Bad ego, or generally ego in my terms is when you start letting it make decisions and ruin your relationships and life. Having an ego in a fight when you're wrong, showing off if you're right, showing your achivements and not texting first or reply late just cause the other person didn't reply early is all bad and won't lead you anywhere. In other words What I am saying is , just be yourself, stand up for yourself and don't be afraid to be called out as egoistic if someone doesn't like you having yourself as a priority, but at the same time if you behave like an asshole and are egostic and show off, then you're gonna get in trouble.Just be humble , simple and good to people but know your worth and have self respect and keep yourself a priority
