What are the best graphics card choices $300 or < ?

I agree, get a Radeon HD 6770 or GeForce GTX 550 Ti. Maybe a Radeon HD 6850 maximum. For your screen, anything more expensive is a waste.

Dylan has it completely backwards on quality & support. While AMD cards are better values for the money especially under $100, their drivers are WORSE than Nvidia. There are for more people with weird Crossfire bugs waiting for fixes from AMD than people with outstanding SLI problems.

If you don't mind paying a few bucks more for a GTX 550Ti instead of a Radon HD 6770 or a GTX 560 instead of a Radeon HD 6870, the Nvidia cards are a little better. Just not better deals.

Graphic card recommendations?

In response to C-Man:

My resolution is at 1680x1050. Although I operate my games at lower resolutions because I find the higher resolutions do have a rather negative effect on the FPS. You talk about the PSU requirements for a variety of graphic cards, but what about the other specifications in the PC? If I wanted to opt for the GeForce GTS450 you talk about (having watched videos of this card being used in the games I play it looks awesome) would updating processor etc help? (I ask this because each video I have seen with this GTS450 card seems to have i7 processors or equivalent)
