House Training 9 Week Old Puppy

How do I house train a 9 month old puppy?

Up to 25 percent of dogs relinquished to animal shelters by their owners end up there due to housebreaking problems. The same statistic applies to dogs seen by veterinarians — 25 percent of behavior-related visits to vets concern toileting.Guide: Dog Training 101: How to Completely Train Your Dog – Millie Hensworth – MediumI think one of the main reasons attempts to potty train fail is because pet owners tend to look at their dogs as four-legged humans, and if a human in your household were to use the floor instead of a bathroom to relieve himself, it would be quite upsetting.Your pup has done something natural for her by relieving herself when the urge struck. You have reacted in a way that’s natural for you, which is to be offended that a furry family member has just made a stinky mess on your carpet, tile or hardwood floor.I was driving to work about six months ago and thought I saw a fox off to the side of the road in a ditch. I pulled over to take a closer look and realized the fox was actually a small, fuzzy dog that was up in years she looked to be about 10. I spent the next half hour trying to catch her because she was one very frightened pup. When I got her to Natural Pet, my animal clinic, we checked her over thoroughly. The poor girl was a mess. She had mange. She had bad hips, bad eyesight, and her nails were grown into the pads of her little feet. It was obvious she’d been homeless for quite some time.Instilling good potty habits from the start in a puppy is much easier than re-training an adult dog. But if your furry friend is older, do not despair.Never leave your un-housebroken dog unattended. Not even for a minute. If you aren’t actively engaged with your dog, having her in the same room doesn’t count. Some dog parents believe crates are a bad thing. Not true! The fact is a crate is actually a very natural, normal habitat for a dog, as long as your pup doesn’t associate it with punishment.Dogs are den dwellers by nature. Under normal circumstances, they enjoy and will seek out small, safe, warm “bedrooms” in which to rest. If you provide your pup with his own little den (crate) and there’s nothing forceful or punishing about his association with it, he’ll make it his own.I’ll discuss more about crate training in part 2 of this series next week.If you’re dead set against crate-training your un-housebroken dog, then your only other option is to tether your pup to you so that no matter where you go, she’s right there with you.

Crate training my 9 week old maltese puppy!

It is definitely not too late. And from my experience most dogs actually like the crate, because they feel secure in it. I would not get a really big one, maybe just medium sized.

You should put Charlie in the crate when you are home, and take him out every hour, to hour and a half, and carry him right outside to use the bathroom. This way he learns to go from crate right outside to do his business. And you may want to put him back in the crate for another hour or hour and a half and take him out again. You can work to extend the time to like 2 hours in and then take him out. Work to increase the time to get him use to it.

You don't want to leave him in there for a REAL LONG time. He is still a puppy and cannot hold it for a long time, so he has accidents. But I have also seen where dogs in crates will hold it as long as possible, because they know if they go in the crate they have to sit in it and smell it.

I have had 3 litters around here, and for the first 8 weeks of the puppies life, I would work very hard to keep putting the puppies out like every hour. But like I said, they have tiny bladders. So, be patient. As they get bigger, so does the bladder, and it will get stronger too.

Crate training issues with 9-week old min pin puppy?

I brought home a min pin puppy last week and since I did not have a crate with me at the time, I slept on the couch in the living room with the dog snuggled under the blankets with me so I could keep a close eye on her. Now that I finally have the crate, I've tried to get my puppy as comfortable as possible in her crate. I leave treats, her chew toys, and her food dish in there, and I praise her whenever she goes in and remains calm (not for more than 5 minutes).

However, she has still pee'd in the crate even though I put her food dish in there and yes, I have a divider panel so there isn't excess room in the crate either. She tends to whine when I keep her in there for longer than 5 minutes. Last night, I tried leaving her in the crate at night for her to finally sleep in but it wouldn't work b/c she would almost constantly cry. I am still sleeping in the living room with the crate right next to me in sight so I am not sleeping well!

What should I do?! How long does it usually take for a puppy to be comfortable sleeping in their crate?

Also, a general question, but how long does it usually take to house train a puppy? Right now, after a week, she is about 50/50 when it comes to going correctly on the wee-wee pad. And I have to guide her half the time when she does get it right also, so the true split is probably closer to 25/75. Should I be concerned?

Crate/potty train 7 week old puppy?

im bringing home a 7 week old puppy soon and i know they aren't supposed to leave their mother for 8-12 weeks so don't bother telling me that. the owner and mother are moving so they are letting the puppies go a week early.

i want to crate train the puppy and im wondering if i need to give her enough space to poop and pee in her crate for a couple of weeks? at first i didn't want to do that but i keep reading that the puppy is going to go in the crate for a while because she is so young and i don't want her to get used to doing it in "her" area. her schedule will be somewhat like this:

9:45 pm- 15 min walk and potty
10 pm- crate
2:30 am- 5-10 min walk and potty
245 am- crate
5:30 am- 15 min walk and potty.
she MAY go back in her crate after this depending on my work schedule.
8 am- 15-20 min walk and potty
8:30 am- crate
12:30 pm - walk and potty
12:45 pm- crate
i get home between 3-4 to let her out and play/potty/walk until 9:30. she will be going back into her crate between 3-9 when i am busy and unable to play with her. or when she is sleeping.

so my question is, what should i do about the crate?

Potty training abandoned 6 week old pup?

You should not rub his nose in it. It will make him afraid of you. You need to take him outside every 15 to 30 minutes and when he pottys for you make a sound like zip or clap your hands something that will let him know he did well and offer a SMALL treat. Do this often soon he will realize that this is the behavior you are looking for it is called positive behavior modification. You can use this same behavior modification to teach him to set stay come or do any number of tricks. Most people do it with a clicker but you must not have one so for now a hand clap or a zip sound will have to work. Crate training at night is perfect but do not use that as punishment. If you do not catch him in action just clean up the mess and take him out. If you catch him in action try to stop him in mid flow or mid pooh and take him outside right away. If you take him to the same spot all the time that is where he will always go so you will not have to search around for his pooh. Just take a bag with you and clean up is a snap.
