How Am I A Republican I Thought I Was A Libertarian

Do libertarians vote Democrat or Republican?

Seeing as how I’m a Canadian citizen (and a 17-year-old at that), voting in the States is a no-no for me, though I’ll still entertain this question, because entertainment is fun, and I like fun.First off, I’m a Libertarian. This sort of system emphasizes economic conservatism while looking over social issues in a more lukewarm manner, and by that I mean we’re not religious zealots about it. Libertarians often don’t care if you’re gay or black or identify as a Pokemon; so long as you properly contribute to society and follow Libertarian policies, that’s to say, free markets, privatization, things like that, you’re a good American citizen. Whether or not they vote for Republican or Democrat can go either way.Like one of the users mentioned, both sides can offer rational and consistently logical arguments for their ideologies. In fact, it irritates me when smug Democrats or Republicans (mostly Democrats, though, according to my careful observations on Quora) demean the other side because they’re “idiots who ignore facts”, and such and such.I’ll tell you whom I’d cast my vote on:Republicans!Wait, don’t leave! I can explain!Truth be told, I’m not particularly fond of Republicans, at least not until recent years. For the longest time they’ve been complete assholes to blacks, gays, women—all under the guise of religious justification. So, really, I would probably be voting Democrat; but again, only till recent years.I don’t like what I’ve witnessed thus far, I mean, what the Democrats have been doing. Seems like a lot of social pandering, SJW-ness, and even those tantrums thrown when Hillary Clinton lost. They went from the cool guys who make you think to the ones who demand you accept everything they say. While I still don’t like religious Republicanism, I’d consider myself a conservative nowadays since they seem to be the more sophisticated ones: the lot that ask questions rather than immediately assume, and look carefully at the economy rather than saying, “But human rights is the economy!” Modern conservatism, mostly from the perspective of policies involving capital, and even some social issues, seems, to me, far more intellectually stimulating than modern day liberalism. Now then, I’m fairly certain plenty of intelligent Libertarians can rebut my points and explain why they’d vote Democrat. That’s fine, and it’s why opinions are so great.

What are the top differences between a Libertarian, Republican and Democrat?

In simple languageDemocrat- Big government, more spending, social liberalism, pro choice, gun control, marriage equality ( for the most part , they support this) , raising the minimum wage, big taxingRepublican - Small government, less spending, socially conservative, anti pro choice, anti gun control, oppose marriage equality ( for the most part, they oppose it),not raising the minimum wage, believe in tax cutsLibertarian- Small Government, less spending, socially liberal, government has NO business to tell you what to do with your body, Guns are individual rights ,Government should stay out of marriages, legalizing marijuana, non interventionist , anti wars, privatization of social security , allowing the free market to decide the minimum wage, think taxation is fraud.Libertarians are of the opinion that you have the right do whatever you want to, so long as you don’t hurt anyone or take someone else’s stuff along the way.Libertarians are actually classic Republicans. Most Libertarians 30 years ago would have been mainstream Republicans . The nutcases you see today are NOT Republicans in the real sense , but populist whackjobs. Gov Gary Johnson was a Republican governor of New Mexico, Bill Weld was a Republican Governor of MA. Ron Paul who ran for President as a Republican was a Libertarian Presidential nominee in 1988.Even in modern day. Libertarians agree with Republicans on 6 to 7 out of 10 issues. But the 3 issues they might disagree with are complete deal breakers and poles apart from each other ( Government policed personal lives, foreign policy, war on drugs). The founding fathers of USA were libertarians in the classic sense- Example Jefferson, Washington, Benjamin Franklin.Modern day- Ron Paul, Gary Johnson.Image Source : Google. I own nothing.Source : YoutubeI am disabling the comments now.Far too many butthurt, oversensitive Americans from both parties who are showing the world why we are known to be loud, rude and just extremely opinionated in our views. And don't forget ignorant!

Why are Libertarians rare?

It's funny, I know both democrats and republicans who basically have libertarian philosophies, but they are just so used to the two major options, they never choose a middle ground. I think many have never really considered libertarian, and I think many who have feel it's a wasted vote.

Personally, I think establishing a third party would be one of the best things that could ever happen to American politics. Besides having a third option, it would make the two other parties, think about whether or not they really want to cater to the extremes.

(Add - I think another thing is the difference in the basic philosophy and the extreme to which many libertarian candidates take it.)

As a civil Libertarian, why do people think I am a republican?

Perhaps people are making that judgement not based on your stated claim of being a civil libertarian but based on other things that you’ve said. For example.Alexandra Odell's answer to Must anyone in the United States without proper documentation be removed from the United States?Alexandra Odell's answer to Why do people believe Trump is no good for the United States?Alexandra Odell's answer to If you have one thing to say to all the Trump supporters, what would it be?Your support for a clearly authoritarian president, anti-immigrant, and isolationism make you look like the opposite of a “civil libertarian”.I have a great respect for libertarianism (I also have substantive disagreements). But I have come to learn that in practice many self-described “Libertarians” are just plain old Conservatives without the religious aspect. And particularly in the South in the US it is used as intellectual cover for “I don’t want the federal government telling me who I’m not allowed to discriminate against.”The number of self-styled libertarians who are deeply illiberal is enough that I have become incredibly suspicious of the term. And you have helped re-enforce my suspicions.

What do libertarian Republicans think of Republican efforts to make divorce more difficult?

I'm not a republican but am fairly libertarian, so I'll weigh in. I think it's a classic effort by the religious right of the sort I have long opposed, and it's a good example of the kind of legislation that has caused a major schism in the right (one which I believe is positive and has been long overdue). The Democratic Party has its own factions, as well. For example, decade after decade Democrats opposed gay marriage. This included most democrats now in office and some of the biggest names in the party. Barak Obama opposed gay marriage. Hillary Clinton opposed gay marriage. Until it was politically expedient to do otherwise.Yet I, as a libertarian, supported it and believed all along that government has no right to involve itself in the matter of marriage at all. Imagine that.My point? That neither party is homogenous in its beliefs. Libertarians on the right are very different from the "base" of the GOP and have many areas in which there is disagreement.

As a libertarian, what are your thoughts on people who join the military?

I once was a bit of libertarian, but found out they are mainly Republicans in a cloud of pot smoke. Mainly. The rest would like to strip the government to the barest of departments and tax at a much lower rate. They tend to vote with Republicans.I am also a "people who join the military" person too. The military itself is needed. As to what it is needed for there is some disagreement over in between individuals let alone parties. We cannot simply retreat to within our borders, the world has proved it is incapable of peace without US being up in the business of them. We have prevented major wars by being in a constant police action or another. The battle of Stalingrad killed more people than all the police actions since then. We have been able to enforce a peace on Earth by being the worlds traffic cop. Cops generally do not like their jobs, but they know it needs done. Other people do not like cops, but rarely do they dissolve the police force. Many people dislike this and many libertarians would that it were not so. Those sentiments are shared by those in the military, except the Marines, the word is the Marines pray to St. Chesty Puller every night for war. The rest of us do not wish a war, but know wishing it away will not make it happen. However playing the cop will prevent a great war. We pay blood and treasure to ensure this is the case, no doubt. Still it is far less as we have not managed to pay what we paid in WWII alone - since then - not even close. We might have the best and most prosperous nation that has ever existed, second only to heaven itself, but without men and women willing to kill to defend it - none of it matters. All the high minded concepts and egalitarianism in the world will not save you when push comes to shove comes to fire and close combat. I sleep well at night knowing that thousands upon thousands of steely eyed, barrel chested, ministers of death operate for our collective defense at all hours of the Z clock. They are out there doing Uncle Sam's daily bidding keeping our enemies frazzled and on their heels.

Why did the Republicans refuse to stand up to Bush? Why did the Democrats refuse to stand up to Obama?

I wasn't a Republican then, and I did stand up against him, and then when Obama came in and started harming me and passing laws that did not benefit the people that the Democrat party used to represent, I left the Democrat party, and became a Republican, something I've never thought I would have done just 8 years earlier. Although I am currently a Libertarian, and will vote for whoever doesn't harm me and passes policies I believe in, I have no party loyalty, so if some crazy faction hijacks the Libertarian party in the future, I will leave them as well. And I generally don't vote based on party lines, but actual platforms the candidates are claiming to support. These days, that tends to still be Republicans, but I have no party loyalty in general. It's ironic though, as even though I used to be a Democrat, I've learned they don't even really want me back. And I believe this is because I question things, and am not brainwash-able, they want people who just have unquestioning loyalty that don't ask, "why" and just vote as they're told.
