I really hate this song with all my heart. everyone else seems to like it! not only do the lyrics make me want to gag but but that chorus is so annoying and no matter who sings it it always sounds bad. i especially hate when john mayor sings it, because i hate john mayor. john mayor and this song are two of the few things i loathe most in this world. Please tell me that there is someone else out there who hates this song!!!!! !

I love Tom Petty. I feel the Same here and I think Refugee and Running Down a Dream are great songs, Tom Petty is definately an under-rated forgotten classic rock legend, in much the same way Jethro Tull is.

One of my fondest memories was a three-hour drive back from Michigan with my oldest son in the back seat... he was only 6 or 7 years old. Up until then, his musical world had been Disney and Pokemon. But he’d gotten an iPod with "my" music on it and for the entire ride, he listened to "American Girl" over and over. He had ear buds in so all I could hear was him singing along... mangling the lyrics... but obviously loving it and trying to figure it out. I got [literally] a front row seat to the day my son discovered poetry and music and rock-and-roll. I love a lot of Tom’s songs, but for me, that day will always be his personal gift to me.
