The best way to learn how to become a better singer is by practicing vocal warm ups every day. You might also want to get a vocal coach or buy a vocal training course. In my opinion the power of Soul is not defined by wailing, or reaching the highest notes, and it sure ain't Beyoncé. I believe a voice of true soul comes from either deep sorrow, and pain, or heavenly joy. To be powerful isn't enough, the voice needs to dig into your heart and create empathy whenever it sours, or breaks. In terms of heavenly joy, I personally feel Mahalia Jackson will never be surpassed as the prime example of a voice that has the power, the tenderness, the pitch, agility, and the timbre to provide every word with the full personality of her being, and carry her message. In terms of Gospel music, despite Arteha Franklin, and many other great soul singers, Mahalia reigns supreme as one of the finest examples.Annie Lennox - on record and live she is a powerhouse with an incredible range, and also one of the few Pop singers that can cut right through to the point of her songs, and make you feel every word she's singing.Further female vocalists of course such as Janis Joplin, Aretha, Dusty Springfield, Dina Washington, Nina Simone come to mind. While Alison Moyet, Nona Hendryx, Grace Jones, Amy Winehouse, and Melody Gardot are worthy mentions. While I agree that Lana Del Rey is getting there, perhaps powerful would then be defined in a different way. Although I don't appreciate her repertoire, Lady Gaga is certainly an amazing vocal talent, as is Christina Aguilera. Just not my music.As far as the men are concerned, I am sure that Marvin Gaye, James Brown, and Stevie Wonder remain undisputed. Certainly Robert Plant, Freddie Mercury, Jim Morrison, Percy Sledge, and even Bono goes without saying.I just want to mention one more example that I personally feel set a new record for the most mature sounding and powerful vocals at the age of 13!!and still remains pretty amazing today.
