Would you rather be a quadriplegic or die?

I’m sorry, to me that seems like a dreadfully limited view of the wonders of life.To me, your question is akin to asking, would I rather take it upon myself to end this mortal sojourn which God has sent me here to travel through, or take on a new challenge through which I might be able to help more of God’s children through their struggles?Struggles are only as bad as the attitude you bring with you into them. And if you step into a struggle with every intent of finding some lesson you can use to help another, then when you find that person, a struggle can become a treasured blessing, worthy of singing praises to God about.

What is worse being blind or a quadriplegic?

I have a friend who dove into a pool and had spinal injury. He cant move his legs but he can his arms. He was already in this condition when I met him. I have another friend who had a car battery explode and burned his face and he lost his sight. He now uses a cane and learns echolocation. Both say they are happy. I think personally I would rather be blind. I cannot imagine not being able to move from the neck down but perhaps its like everything, you get used to it. Both of my friends are religious Jews and maybe having faith gets them through because G-d has a reason for everything but I admit, I am too but I would have a hard time being paralyzed

If a person with Parkinson's became a Quadriplegic, would their body still shake?

yes. a paralyzed person from kneck down IS a quadriplegic and parkinson's is not controllable so the person wouldnt need to be able to move themselves. when you are paralyzed your body still moves if someone is there to move you. you just can move yourself. the nerves dont work so the muscles cant know to move.

What are the chances of becoming quadriplegic from a pool diving accident?

My mom wants to keep my sister and me from using our backyard's pool diving board since there is a chance that we will hit our heads n the upslope and become paraplegic or quadriplegic. What is the actual chance that a well-judged dive into about 8 or 9 foot water (noting that I usually dive shallowly) with a out 5-6 feet from the tip of the board to the start of the upslope will result in serious injury such as those?

How to overcome fear of becoming para or quadriplegic!?

I fear it because spending the rest of your life wheelchair, or worse, bed bound is a fate worse than death. I'm terrified that it could happen to me and reading about it happening to other people doesn't help. I fear getting it through disease ( ALS) or debilitating injury(car crash or fall from high place). Please help.

My daughter became a C4 complete quadriplegic in October 2017. What are her chances at recovery, career and living a normal life?

I am so sorry to hear about your daughter’s tragic accident resulting in such a serious injury.Being a complete quadriplegic is a total life-changing injury. You describe this as “complete,” so I take that to mean the spinal cord was severed rather than being compressed. And if the cord is severed, there will be no healing or other positive changes.A quadriplegic at C4 is the highest and most challenging. So your daughter will need 24-hour care for the rest of her life.I used to be employed at a rehabilitation institute that specialized in spinal cord injuries, and so I have dealt with many patients with similar injuries. I provided direct nursing care. On the night shift, we had to turn sleeping patients every three hours or so to prevent bed sores, etc. And we assisted with all other care during the day for feeding, and bathing, etc.I recall one patient (Danny) who came to our facility about 6 weeks after his accident. He broke his neck playing football at age 15. I do not recall his exact spinal cord injury, but probably C5-C6, since he had some function of his triceps. Anyway, it was a number of years later when I was at the Law Library at the University of Minnesota doing some legal research, and who should I see, but Danny. He was a law school student. He was in an electric wheel chair. That means Danny finished High School, and graduated from college, and continued on to Law School. Of course, he needs assistance at every step, including someone to turn the pages of the book he is reading.I recall another patient named Pat, who was in his mid-50’s. He was also a quadriplegic, and he was an executive at the 3M company. (I don’t recall the details of his story.)These cases are the exceptions. I can’t imagine how difficult it would be for someone to accomplish so much with such severe disabilities.Your daughter will never live a “normal” life. She will need assistance. But there is hope.Google “Joni Eareckson Tada.” She is also a quadriplegic. I do not know her personally, but I heard her speak at a church one time when she visited Minneapolis. She is an inspiration.

I am perpetually paranoid that I will become a quadriplegic for life. I am constantly looking behind me to see if there is something or someone that might break my spinal cord at the neck. What should I do about this?

I read the other answers, and I will weigh in because I did not see anything that goes into the place where I think this really comes from. The short answer, which will seem very strange at first, is that you need this fear or paranoia for some important life function. When there is a recurrent negative experience in your life, it is worth asking the question “why is this happening to me? Why do other people not have this experience?” Without getting into the fact that, in fact, most people do have these issues— just not about quadripelgia, the answer is that it relates to something that you are doing differently than other people. The re-occurrence of this image in your mind is related to something you are doing. The key to letting it come to an end is to understand the function it plays. There is some purpose it is serving in your life. Don’t assume it is a useless purpose either. When you fully realize the role it has played in your life until now, you will feel both thankful and relieved. And then you can let that image go.You must speak with this part of your mind, and find out what is the purpose of it. It is difficult to communicate with parts of ourselves. They don’t walk up and introduce themselves! You must find a pathway to communicate with it. Maybe it is emotions, maybe it is pictures. Whatever works— do it. Find a way to communicate with the part of you that sends you these images and find out why.Once you have understood the reason— use your adult brain to consider the higher purpose of this negative experience and devise an alternative, yet superior, solution and propose it to this part of yourself. Ask yourself for agreement to the new idea. Then after you have secured agreement— honor that agreement. Do as you have promised. If you do these things, the image will stop on its own with no real effort. The key to understanding a recurrent meditation like this is to understand that your subconscious is producing this experience on purpose. Until you understand that purpose, you cannot find the improved way to the same goal that your subconscious will accept as a substitute.
