How Can I Find A Friend That Likes Death/black Metal

What is the appeal of death/black metal?

I'm just really curious, I want to know what it is about the genres of death/black/thrash metal that is so appealling to people. I have a friend who only listens to that type of metal, so I know that the more "brutal" and disgusting something is, the better. But why?! I hate the vocals in those genres and can't see any good song structure. I'm not trying to insult the genres or the fans, but personally I find death metal horrible. I listen to stuff like A7X, BMTH, ETF, MCR, BVB so I'll probably get a bunch of crap saying I'm an "emo" and a "******" but I just want to know what it is about deth metal that draws people in.

Best death/doom/black metal band EVER?

Anathema (I recommend their first album "Serenades". They originally started out as a Death/Doom Metal band and eventually progressed into more atmospheric prog rock, so stick with their earlier material.)

Katatonia (Recommended albums are their first two "Dance of December Souls" and "Brave Murder Day".)

Opeth (You can't go wrong with any of their albums, but if your friend is into more Death/Black Metal, I suggest you check out their first two albums "Orchid" and "Morningrise")

Agalloch (Recommended albums: "Ashes Against The Grain" and "The Mantle")

Tristania (Goth/Doom Metal band that has consistently released quality albums, excluding their last one. I'd say "Widows Weeds" and "Beyond The Veil" are among some of their best.)

Draconian (Goth/Doom band that have continually released great albums, "Arcane Rain Fell" being a personal favorite of mine.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Bi62GRIlSE

Shining (Pretty good Depressive Black Metal band that incorporates doom elements and acoustic passages into their songs. Their best album is "V: Halmstad")
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDHGKumT9U8

Blut Aus Nord (Black Metal band from France that is more on the ambient/experimental side of the genre. I recommend their album "Memoria Vetusta II - Dialogue with the Stars")
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXlYtl5AG1c

Enslaved (One of the greatest Progressive Black Metal bands out there, I highly suggest checking out their newest album "Axioma Ethica Odini")
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ddes3psWpg4

Solefald (Very artistic Black Metal band that utilizes many different elements. I suggest you check out their first album "The Linear Scaffold" and their latest "Norrøn Livskunst", if you want more straightforward Black Metal since this band tends to experiment a lot.

Black Metal vs Death metal?

I prefer Black Metal but it doesn't mean Black Metal is better :)

A Hatchet in the Cross
Harbinger of Bloodshed
Nightmare of the Damned
Blinded by the Black Light
Lilith, My Queen
Belial, the True God
Five-Pointed Crucifix
Age of Iniquity
Army of Abominations
Morte Christi (Latin for "The Death of Christ")

Fans of Death/Black Metal, do you like Power Metal?

I still love Power Metal just as much as I do Black or Death metal. I hate it when people call Power Metal "gay" because the singer can actually sing and have lyrics that are written like adventure stories. I have a friend that don't like PM because vocalists have vibrato in their vocals when you're supposed to when you SING...

My top favorites change a lot but these have been my favorites for a while:
Sonata Arctica - Silence
Blind Guardian - Nightfall In Middle-Earth
Luca Turilli - Demonheart
Lost Horizon - A Flame To The Ground Beneath
Guardians Of Time - Machines Of Mental Design

Edit: Don't you just love idiots like Leah <3 Muse, she saw the word "Metal" and left her closed minded comment... What a brain.

Am I a bad person if I love listening to Death Metal music?

Not if you’re disturbing the neighbors often! :P[Some trigger warnings: Taboo stuff, long answer]Liking Death Metal (gonna shorten to DM) means you have taken the step on your own with an open mind and you’re able to appreciate what the genre has to offer.Your religion isn’t affected nor does it make you a criminal (Extreme Music; not just Death Metal, often calms you down and lets you release emotions such as aggression in a somewhat passive manner. The only side effect may include head-banging and foot-tapping)Of course, Death Metal often deals with taboo issues and consists of some violent lyrics but there’s also the fact that lyrics are often not the cusp of most DM songs, it’s usually the virtuosity of the instruments which are essential. That's one of the reasons why extreme music genres such as Mathcore, Technical/Progressive DM, and Progressive Metal are the hardest to approach for someone who’s unknown to the Metal genre as a whole. Screaming/Growling vocals and weird time signatures are also a huge turnoff for many. :/Speaking of taboo issues, most of the death metal songs are in fact against them. Living Monstrosity by Death (Old School DM / Tech DM) deals with the pain crack babies have to face. Flesh And The Power It Holds by the same band is more or less a poem that deals with the negatives of worldly pleasures. Gojira (a Technical Death / Progressive Metal band) more or less deals with… Environmental issues.Of course, most DM and it’s subgenres do in fact, deal it death, gore, violence, war; the negative facets of the world as they’re. It’s up to you which band you follow and which you don’t.As for me? I generally have my headphones on while listening to any kind of music so as to not disturb anyone, especially not when my sister’s flying chappals hit harder than the most savage DM riffs. My family knows well of my Metalhead-edness, and I often make my mother listen to some songs which are a pretty cool feeling as she was the one who introduced me to “western music.” They understand and respect the fact that at the end of the day it’s just music, if it’s anything wrong, they let me know. So far they haven’t said anything.P.S: Death’s late frontman Chuck Schuldiner had an awesome mother who trusted his son to the fullest and let him be. Here’s an interview, read up!

Why do people like black metal ?

Black metal, like any style of music, is an acquired taste. This is a style of music which places much larger emphasis on the overall atmosphere of the music rather than individual riffs, beats, or vocal patterns. While all of these are present, they contribute to the atmosphere, which is meant to convey a sense of chaos, darkness, and disorder. The rhythm is there, but it's typically fast, and difficult to spot out because of the intentionally chaotic production. The vocals for the most part are shrieked or otherwise harsh, and the guitars are high pitched and droning. That's just the way the desired atmosphere of black metal is. People tend to like to get that feel of chaos and dissonance, just like teeny boppers like to listen to Miley Cyrus for that poppy style.

There are other subgenres of black metal, which include melodic black metal and symphonic black metal, which are less abrasive, more melodic, and less "chaotic". Check out Dimmu Borgir's album "Enthrone Darkness Triumphant" for a good example.

Also, do not listen to Cradle of Filth if you want to get a taste for black metal. Just a precaution.
