Correct finger position on piano?

kathryn. I think it's great that you're making an effort to improve on your playing. I used to have that problem of bending the last joints of my index, middle and ring fingers on both hands. I didn't know it was a problem at first but was only able to correct it when my instructor pointed that out to me and consistedly kept watch on my fingers while I played. Hanon pieces for me during this time was for technique building and corrective exercises. It became a priority to make a conscious effort everytime I played the piano to condition my hand to play with all of my fingers curved. It took some time to undo the bad habit but it paid off eventually. It's now natural for me and I no longer bend or lock my finger joints.

Be sure that you have someone to guide you as well. If you want to approach Hanon (or any other finger exercises) to help you with this problem, be sure to keep everything slow first (approx. 60bpm). This way you'd be able to really see where you're going wrong at every step of the way and correct it on the spot. Always keep in mind to not bend or lock the joints. As you become more comfortable, you'll know how it should feel to play with your fingers curved (good habit) and also with your finger joints bent or locked (bad habit). This will further reinforce your muscle memory as you'd be more aware of the way your fingers are pressing the keys. You'll also naturally play quicker than usual without trying. There's always the tendency to try and play the exercises faster when you aren't ready yet and this may develop other unfavourable playing habits so try and keep that in mind too. This will take some time but you'll be grateful that you looked into this right from the start.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

Do I need long fingers to play the piano effectively?

It certainly can be a challenge starting out; some well-known pianists (Liszt) is known to have pretty long fingernails, which allowed him to stretch to some crazy notes (some say an octave and a half). To play effectively, no; if you have dexterity issues or reaching notes, there are many technical exercises that you can use to help with it. In addition, you can focus on using the wrist to help you play better. There are many videos on Youtube on how to use your wrist when you play the piano. Learn from them. Good Luck.

How to train double jointed fingers for piano?

You can do some isometrics. These are good for strengthening any joints. Double jointedness means that a particular joint is weak. If you, once a day, use each finger and press down on a hard surface (like a table) for ten seconds in a good curved position as though you are at the piano, it should strengthen those joints. If they collapse while doing the exercise, use your other hand to bolster the joints while you are pressing down.
