How can we open a corrupted external hard drive without formatting on Windows 7?
You can't. Once the drive becomes damaged or being corrupted, internal file system won't allows any type of read or write actions. Using recovery programs before formatting is recommended if you've saved something useful on it and don't want it to be fade away permanently. I'd recommend formatting only after recovering your precious files. Else, you might lose the entire stored content. Good luck!!

Sounds like you might have a 300 something gb partition Download Gparted, (http://gparted.sourceforge.net/) burn live CD Boot computer from CD drive (with Gparted disc in the drive and your external hard drive attached) In the Gparted GUI you will probably see multiple partitions. I got a 500GB external hard drive and tried different methods for formatting from using CMD to convert it but it says the volume is too big for fat32 to using that fatformat32.exe program and nothing works. what are some ways to get this formatted? 1tb external hard drive with 31gb space only available?
the external harddrive is new, the only this ive done with it is format it to FA32 (so it shows up on ps3) and add a few films to it, i feel like i would have noticed all that missing space when i first bought it so i dont think it came like that, but it shows total space on the hard drive as only 31gb and it s a 1TB harddrive, (& yes i am 100% sure of this) Make is HITACHI & bought from Amazon. I got a 1tb external hard drive for the wii u because i bought the 8gb version (if you want full games on the eShop you have to have more memory) but when i connected my hard drive the wii u wanted to format it before it let me use it for the wii u so i did that and i also wanted to use it for my computer and some other things now it doesnt work at all. The light comes on and the fan spins in the hard drive but the computer or the wii u wont detect it. here is some information about the hard drive. How to delete corrupted+unreadable file from external hard drive?
Hi, I have an iomega external hard drive and I'm trying to delete a folder (of photos) from it but it doesn't let me. I get the following error message: "Error 0x80070570: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable". I've tried cut&paste, tried to delete via the "start - run - del" method but without any luck. Would appreciate any advice (but not too techy because I probably won't understand!). I'm using vista too if that's of any relevance. Thanks so much!!

I don’t have a lot of time to write a proper answer, but I want to leave with a place to start before I come back and edit this response.Whatever you do, do not format it. Although it is recoverable at that point, it’s a pain.Most of the time when you get to this point, it’s a controller failure on the hard drive itself. Sometimes this is circumventable and sometimes it just requires using software like “EaseUS: Partition Master” in partition recovery mode. Other times, it requires more work.Google the Partition Master partition recovery mode I mentioned, and only use the safest routes recommended in the tutorials for now. If the issue persists and recovery mode doesn’t find anything, there’s some steps you can take to manually backup all of your files (if they’re accessible at all regardless of the weird formatting error; uses yet another specialized software that’s user friendly) before you should try anything more drastic.It is also possible that the controller is completely toast and you’d have to purchase an identical drive and have a technician replace the controllers to make it work again.It’s also possible there’s more than just that wrong with it.I’m sorry if this isn’t instilling hope or very helpful at the moment. I promise I’ll come back to this and answer any comments you leave, as well as expound upon this answer when I get the chance.
