How do I go about getting a green card?

how would I go about getting a green card to live in the USA. I have heard from some people that I just need to apply for one, hand over a sum of money and there I go. I have heard others say I need to have a job and get my boss to apply and get me one, or be married to an American and have her apply to get me one. So what is the way to get a green card?

Is it easy to get a US green card?

Getting a green card through H1B or L1B is a very laborious process and not for faint hearted. When I came to US in 96, it took me 9 years to get citizenship but now it might take closer to 15–18 years to get green card if you are lucky and then another 5+ to get citizenship.BUTIf you come in L1A, chances are you can get a green card within a yearTo come in L1A, you need to work as a manager or an executive in an Indian subsidiary of US firm and get transferred to US and also perform managerial or executive role in US.Once you have L1A, you can apply for Green Card through EB1C category. Major advantage of EB1C category is that you don't need to go through labor certification and you can directly file I-140. Almost always priority date for EB1 is current, so employer can concurrently file for I-485 adjustment of statusEntire process would be complete within a yearSo if you want a green card, I suggest that you find a US subsidiary, stay a little longer, fight the urge to come to US at the first opportunity, get into managerial or executive position, wait for a similar job opening in your US head office, get selected, make sure your company files L1A and then come to US.Good Luck !! It is worth the wait.

Green Card question?

Unless it's a conditional green card based on your marriage, and if you've been married 10 years, then that's not the case. So it's permanent, and if your marriage does break up, it will not affect your legal status in the US.

How random is the green card lottery?

It is not fully random. Your odds of winning a green card depends on your country of citizenship. Citizens of certain countries who are already well represented in the US, like China, the Philippines, India, or Mexico are not eligible. Citizens from African countries have higher odds than those from European countries to win a Visa, but lower odds of being granted a Visa once selected. For more details: Diversity Immigrant Visa

Change picture on green card?

USCIS has set qualifications where green card replacement will be allowed (I-90) and not liking your picture on the card is not one of them. You can read the list where you can have a valid reason to apply for a replacement on the link below. Can a Green Card Holder apply for his Son?

Fred is absolutely correct. Ibu Guru mostly hangs around here intentionally handing out false information. If you doubt it, you don't have to believe either one, and you can look it up for yourself at uscis.gov. If you file the petition before your son turns 21, the petition will take 5 to 7 years before it will become valid as an F2a, just as Fred says. If you wait until he turns 21, it will be an F2b and the wait will be considerably longer. However, he will have to remain single while waiting for the petition, or he will lose his eligibility.
