How Can I Get Some More Power In My Swing In Baseball

Does your swing lose power if you choke up on a baseball bat?

Yes, and no.Yes, choking up a bat will make the lever shorter, meaning the swing itself is less powerful/forceful. The longer the bat, the more force can that can be exerted at the end of the bat (bat speed). There is a factor of diminishing return though, as once a bat gets too long, you begin to lose speed and you have less control so you can’t make good enough contact, counteracting the desired result. No, because you can make a faster swing when the lever is shorter. And you have the potential to hit the sweet spot more often. This is the Barry Bonds factor Mr. Owens spoke of. Because Bonds choked up, he could wait a split second longer seeing the ball, he had greater bat speed than many, and he hit the ball more solidly more often than many. This counteracted any lack of force he incurred by not using the entire length of the bat.

What do you think of my baseball swing?

The bat should be above your shoulders. You should spread out your legs a little more. A wide stace generates power. May I suggest a leg kick? I think your toe tap could be slowing your swing. The swing looks fine but you should make sure to rotate your hips. Also, practice with a wooden bat. It makes everything easier because it doesn't look like your trying to break something with an aluminum bat.

How do you swing a baseball bat faster?

Try a split grip, put about half an inch between your bottom hand and top hand gripping the bat. This will speed up the bat a bit, and give you a bit more control. Guys would do this on two strike counts to help give themselves a bit more reaction time.Snap your hips more, there is a twist with you body and hips, extend your arms at the last second. Throwing your hands at the ball. Don’t open your hips up too early, should be quick.Lighter bat, or warmup with heavier bat or weights. Workout with weights will help a lot too.Loose grip, stay relaxed and let the bat rotate naturally.Use a longer bat, physics dictates the bat moves faster the further away or the bigger the arc. You can also cheat a bit and wrap your pinky finger around the knob to make the bat longer.Keep your weight back until the ball has reached the plate. Bad timing usually causes a hitter to have his weight on the front leg and slows down the swing. This results in a weakly hit ground ball and like what a changeup does to hitters.

When batting in baseball, if the lower hand is the power hand and the top hand is the guide hand - shouldn't right handers bat lefty for more power?

Actually, I always thought power comes from the top hand.  Many hitters---Miguel Cabrera, for example---wrap their bottom hand around the knob of the bat.  So the bottom hand is just the pivot point of the swing---the top hand provide more rotation (and, presumably, the power).

How can I stop uppercutting on my baseball swing?

There are many possible reasons for the pop ups and solutions but this should help.
First, Be sure you are not overstriding as this often causes your body to lower, your hands to drop and an inability to transfer your weight.
Otherwise here are a couple of drills to try.
Set a batting tee even with your back hip and at least hip high. Take some swings coming over the tee but leveling off in the hitting zone. Have a coach flip some balls into the hitting zone and hit the ball by first missing the tee stem.
If you have a second tee, put a tee slightly out front of home and the second one a little out front of the first one. The tee closest to the pitcher should be about three inches above the back tee. Set a ball on both and work on missing the back ball but hitting the lead one. Any drop in the bat barrel will cause you to hit the back ball, which is incorrect.

Force of a Baseball Swing. A baseball has mass 0.145 kg.?

change in momentum = 0.145 X 45 - (-55)
= 14.5 kg m/s

average force = change in momentum / time
= 14.5 / (2.00 X 10^-3) = 7250 N.

I want to be able to swing faster for baseball because I feel this is important. Is there anything I can do to get a faster swing when I am hitting?

If you want to hit with a little more power (or swing a little faster), don't swing harder. Instead, try coiling your hips away from the pitcher just a little bit -- or a little bit more -- during your stride, then initiate your swing by driving your back knee at the pitcher while making sure that your upper body tilts away from the pitcher. This will cause your hips to rotate and generate a lot of power. But be sure that once your front foot is planted, your hips uncoil in a smooth, unrushed manner and eventually face the pitcher without any lateral sliding motion forward. Another way to increase bat speed is to avoid what is called bat drag. To avoid bat drag, the batter must make sure that the back elbow does not drop excessively once the actual swing forward is made. When the back elbow drops too far, too fast, and too early in the swing, the hands then get off too a very late start and it becomes virtually impossible to catch upto a good fastball. Starting your swing with your lower body while tilting your upper body away from the pitcher should get your hands moving and should enable you to avoid bat drag. And swinging with approximately 80% effort, without worrying about how far the ball is hit, may also speed up your swing. And unless it is part of an overloading/underloading training session, such as the one described in the video provided in Melvin Moody's answer, I would not swing a weighted bat for three reasons:Unless the player is very careful, a weighted bat may create an incorrect switch by pulling the bat too far from the body during the swing.A weighted bat will also activate the slow twitch muscles and may actually slow bat speed. And if a weighted bat is swung when the batter is on deck, the muscles will become slightly fatigued and then the swing while in the batters box will actually be slightly slower. And I would be very careful about soft toss and hitting off a tee as well.

Regarding baseball, should I follow through on my swing with two hands or one hand? I don't know which on is better but when I follow through with two hands I roll over.

The follow-through portion of the swing should be incidental to the contact portion of the swing, so your “roll-over” shouldn’t really have anything to do with your follow-through (unless you are suggesting that you perform better when CONTACT is made with one-hand, which I hope is not the case. If your back/top hand staying on the bat is causing you grief, it’S either all on your head or due to a secondary issue, like not rotating your hips and/or back foot enough or doing it too early. If I could see your swing, I would be in a better position to help diagnose and remedy. Nonetheless, unless you have a coach that mandates one particular type of follow-through, I would use the follow-through that makes you more confident and helps you perform the best. There is not any one type of follow-through that is better than the next. Some hitters follow-through with one hand and some with two, some hotters follow-through very high, with their hands up at the top of their head or above it, while others follow through with the hands down low, and the bat meeting their back shoulder. It's totally up to you, and if you hit good using the way that you're comfortable with, your coach shouldn't need to fix anything because hitting is all about performance.

What does it mean when you pull it in baseball? What kind of swing is it?

I was a pull-hitter.One of my best coaches tried to get me to go the other way when appropriate. I was always early. Hips start it (open up) in motion, and shoulder and arms bring it, and wrists finish it.He lived to near 100 years of age. In case any of you readers are from Bergen County, especially Paramus you will rememberPOPS TASHIANHe coached our Babe Ruth League national tournament team to the final game in NJ.He was so well liked that this joke was funny. Upon talking with someone from Paramus that I didn't know, he said “so what have you got against Pops?”Hello to all family and friends of Pops. I think of him fondly from time to time.We had a guy (Mike N.) in our league that is still to this day, the most pronounced pull hitter I can remember anywhere. I shifted on him twice, and he lined it into my glove both times, I didn't have to move, just reach. Hope all is well Mike.Ted Williams was lefty pull hitter. He hit nearly everything hard to RF, so Lou Boudreau of the Indians concocted “the Williams shift”.Harmon Killebrew was a righty pull hitter.
