4. In the "Add Holdings" area, input a cash or private equity holding using the following format:

How do I include a cash position in a portfolio tracked on the Yahoo Finance page?

When I create a portfolio under the "My Portfolios" drop down, I can include all of the holdings with the number of shares. However, I don't know how to include the cash position. The percent change is updated but does not account for the cash so it is off slightly. Can anyone help me fix this? Thanks!

The percentage of cash in your portfolio could vary.First of all, this answer applies if you have a separate emergency cash fund that covers at least 6 months of expenses. Do you have one? You do? Good. Let’s move on…A portfolio is a collection of good investments. What is a good investment? One definition of a good investment is a quality stock bought at a good price. In 2008 and 2009, there were many great companies selling at cheap prices. I had a small amount of cash in my portfolio then - there were a lot of good opportunities into which I could put the cash.Today, cash is building up in my portfolio. Why? Most quality stocks are expensive. I am not finding that many good investment opportunities. So the cash accumulates. In other words, the amount of cash I have is a function of how many good investments are available.I do not know anything about your financial situation; therefore, this answer is not investment advice and should not be taken as such. Do your own work and consult qualified professionals before making any investment decisions.

How to show cash in a Yahoo Finance portfolio?

How you show cash in your portfolio will depend on whether you are using a watch list or a transaction portfolio. In a watch list, select add/edit holdings then enter $$cash for the stock symbol with a price and quantity. In a transactions portfolio, go to view transaction and create transaction. You will have 2 transaction types (security & cash). Select cash then select "cash in" as the type. If you are doing short sales in a transaction portfolio, the amount of the short sale will automatically be added to your cash position.

A watch list works real good as a portfolio with the exception that it will not handle short sales based on a change yahoo did a couple of years ago. For short sales, you have to use a transaction portfolio even through it will not work correctly with short option positions.

I hope this helps
