How Can I Irradiate Food At Home

How do you de-radiate water?

I've read that a steam boiler water purification system will deradiate water. What are some other ways?

"Other ways" being natural, without purchasing 3000 dollars worth of equipment, something someone with a few brain cells could assemble with spare parts.

...Don't live in a radiated zone, just trying to educate myself.

How do microwaves cook food without irradiating it?

Because microwaves are the same kind of radiation as television and radio, em-radiation. What is usually meant by irradiated, gamma radiation is something completely different…

Are there any home food irradiation on units on the market?

No, there isn't. And it wouldn't help if it did.The kind of radiation used in irradiating food is the dangerous kind, Ionizing radiation. Microwaves just heat things up; it causes effects you can feel and get away from. (And conventional ovens actually cause a wider range of chemical reactions, because they take place at a higher temperature. Microwaves never get above boiling, while conventional ovens can easily take things to 500°F (260°C)).There's no way to operate that kind of radiation at home safely. It would be like having a home X-ray machine. (In fact, it could be exactly a home X-ray machine). The things that it does to kill bacteria can also cause cancer, along with a whole host of other diseases. You can recover from burns. You can't easily recover from DNA damage. Besides, it really wouldn't help. By the time the food has reached your home, much of the damage is done. The bacteria aren't the only problem. They can also leave heat-stable toxins that can kill you even if the food is sterile. Further, it works best when there's only a small amount of bacteria in the food, rather than after it's had a chance to multiply itself exponentially. That makes it a lot harder to kill all of the harmful bacteria.For irradiation to work, it has to be done before the bacteria get a chance to grow. It's done early in the food chain, followed by sterile (or at least, clean) handling after that. By the time it gets to your house, the damage may be done, and no machine can fix it.

When a piece of metal is irradiated with UV radiation (lambda = 162 nm), electrons are ejected with a kinetic?

the energy of the incoming photons is

E = hc/L

(I will use the notation where 6.62e-34=6.62x10^(-34), etc...)
h=plancks constant = 6.62e-34Js
c=speed of light 3e8m/s
L=wavelength=1.62e-7m

therefore, E=6.62e-34*3e8/1.62e-7 = 1.23e-18J

this energy equals the work function of the metal + excess energy in the form of KE

therefore,

1.23e-18 = 5.34e-19+Work function
Work function = 6.92e-19J

Are canned food safe from radiation/fall out from a nuclear bomb?

It’s been awhile since I did my NBCW class.As I recall, there are 4 different kinds of radiation but effectively they come in 2 forms. The 1st form penetrate anything, walls, cans etc.So yes, stuff in a truck or a grocery store will get some type of contamination.The big bad is the radioactive dust. Everything in the immediate blast area, buildings, cars, people are turned into a dust that is launched up in that big cloud you see.That dust spreads everywhere. Making everything, it’s near, radioactive.That will get on the lid of your can. So you have to wash it off, or you’ll be eating radioactive dust.So is it safe? No. But it’s a hell of a lot safer than everything around it.

What does is mean when honey is "radurised"?

It means it's been irradiated. Not good! Who says it's harmless - they companies selling the darn stuff?

Pure honey survived 1000s of years in Egypt. They'd irradiate honey if the honey was not pure and they added sugar syrup to it. I would NEVER buy this product!

What food should we avoid for listeria and salmonella concerns?

The answers given by others are spot on. I would add ANY food you intend to eat raw is especially dangerous. Cooking will destroy most pathogens but fruits, vegetables and salads are highly suspect. It’s ironic that people think that eating salad is good for them when it is just as likely to land them in a hospital (or worse). And, not to be alarmist, but washing produce is meaningless (unless it’s to clean dirt). If your iceberg or romaine or baby spinach is contaminated, no amount of washing will remove those pathogens. It might make you feel better but the action has no merit. If you have a healthy immune system you’re good to go, more or less. But it would be wise to not serve raw foods to children, the elderly or the immune compromised.That’s the new reality. One day the US government might finally decide to irradiate raw foods (as they already do for the military) but that’s going to require a massive public education campaign and may cause the cost of lettuces and fruits to skyrocket. But the bottom line is we have not had enough deaths from food borne illness to cause the government to want to get involved.
