How can I make a 'prom' dress look more casual?

I'm going to this banquet for the theater program at my school and the invitation said formal. But there was another piece of paper that said to dress dressy and I didn't realize that until today. I did a lot of research to find the difference (I have to dress dressy for an awards ceremony from school otherwise I had no clue about the second paper) and I realize that formal is like prom dresses and such. So this weekend I got this beautiful dark grey floor-length dress with a slit in one of the sides but I was worried that no one else would be wearing long dresses. My suspicions were correct because I talked to multiple friends who are attending the banquet as well and most of them said that fancy-ish sundresses are appropriate. One friend in particular said that a maxi dress would be ok as long as it didn't look like a prom dress. That's my issue, my dress kind of does look like a prom dress. I don't have anywhere else to where this gorgeous dress and too much money has been invested into it for it to sit in my closet until my prom, and it might not still fit me when that time does come. Therefore I was wondering how to make it look acceptable, I know wearing my hair down and in a casual manner would help but I'm not sure what else would. There is beading on one side around the abdomen area and a jacket and/or sandals aren't options because it's getting hemmed so it doesn't drag when I wear heels, let alone flats. At least my heels are casual though, any ideas? Thank you!

How to make a casual dress more formal and fancy?

Hi all. I have a wedding to go to in a few months and am not sure what to wear. The wedding is my cousin's second marriage and it's going to be 20-25 people (small) and on the beach during the summer. She is wearing an ivory dress and her daughters are wearing summery short dresses. I have a smocked vibrant purple & silver dress, made out of cotton but its pretty sparkly. It's strapless and looks pretty casual. I was thinking of possibly just adding accents to the dress to make it more formal for a wedding, but still beachy and cute. Any ideas? Thanks!

get your self a nice pair of heels, and spice up the dress by wearing big earrings, and keeping accesories more formal. also try doing your hair in an inventive and more formal way then you might normally, this paired with a little bit of makeup should make the semi-forma dress a little more formal.
