How Can I Read An External Hard Drive On A Mac That Was Previously On A Pc- See Details

Is it possible to reformat an external hard drive made for Mac to work with both Windows and Mac?

To make an external drive accessible by a Mac and Windows computer, the easiest way is to format it  using DOS (FAT32) format. From many limitation that it has, one limitation would make me not using it: it will not hold any file with size larger than 2 GB.Another option: format it using NTFS format. OS X can read it, but not write into it. In order to enable OS X write into it, you need to install additional driver/utility. There are several options:Paragon NTFS, orTuxera NTFS, or the free oneMacFUSEOnce you install any of those utility, you will be able to format any hard drive and thumb drive using NTFS format, using OS X built in utility: Disk Utility.

Fix Seagate 1tb external hard drive?

plugged in the usb cable into the female port on the external drive, and it just popped in. haven't dropped it, haven't misused it, just need to back up my computer. When i noticed it wasn't reading i checked the connection, realized the usb port was lost within the drive. Looked at the warranty, called the number, guess it isn't covered. popped open the machine and tried multiple attempts to get it to read just to get a few pictures, videos, and music files off. No luck.

my question is, is there a way to fix the usb port permanently, or at least temporarily?

if this isn't possible, where is a place to get replacement parts. I could just the circuit board the contains the port, the info i can find on the board is

2GEXKZMQ under a bar code, 090616 printed on the board and below this, also printed on the board, Cedar USB 1607 Rev.:1.0

if a replacement part can't be purchased or installed then best way to just replace the casing and keep the hard drive? the drive is just fine, it's just the usb port. hate to have to replace it all and lose my info if i can just connect my computer to the hard drive itself without the need of the broken components.

thanks for any help.

How can I fix my Mac not recognizing my WD external hard drive?

Hey,Let me ask you this first. Did it mounted successfully last time you plugged into the Mac. Was there an unusual behaviour of the disk say an unpleasant clicking noise? When you plug your WD external hard drive to macOS, does it show in Finder or Disk Utility? Perhaps the external hard drive is either listed as unmounted drive in the disk utility or not listed at all. If its unmounted in the Disk Utility then the hard drive name will be greyed out. Here is what Western Digital recommends you to do when WD doesn’t show up https://support.wdc.com/knowledg...File System ProblemWD not getting recognized on macOS because of a possible corruption occurred either on partition table or hfs directory structure corruption. Reformatting the hard drive should fix the problem however to erase such media, it must get listed to Disk Utility.Component FailureCannot rule out the chances of a component failure which is why you should monitor if the External HDD is producing unusual sounds (ticking, buzzing etc.)Try Data Recovery SoftwareData recovery software for Mac allows a free evaluation of the software. You can download Stellar Phoenix Mac Data Recovery tool and connect your troubled external hard drive. Navigate to the software and check if the drive appears in the drive menu. Select a data recovery feature for your external WD hard drive and perform scan to recover all contained data.In case of external hard drives component failure and not getting listed even in the software; the data can be recovered only in a data recovery lab.

External hard drive NTSF - Mac - was working but now I can't copy files?

I am using a new Toshiba external hard drive on a Mac. I opened and downloaded the software file "Tuxera NTSF for Mac." I had a folder with everything I wanted to copy. I dragged it over and it began to copy files. There were numerous files, so I walked away. When I returned, it was about half done. I left, and came back to find an error which stated that the process could not be completed because some files were unreadable. I tried to pull a folder over and it said I could not do so because the file to which I was copying to could not be modified. I kept receiving that error, so I tried restarting the computer. After that I was able to copy one folder to the hard drive. When copying another, I again received an error stating some files were unreadable. When I tried again, it said the drive could not be modified. Now, I can't seem to get past this error. Is there a way to make it work again? I guess I should have followed my instinct and gotten the one that said it was specifically for Mac. There doesn't seem to be any way to delete the files from the hard drive. If I can't make it work, is there a way to clear it out to return it for an exchange?

How do I download all my photos from iCloud to an external hard drive?

If, by iCloud, you mean iCloud Backup, then there are specialised software that claim to do that but beware that they usually don’t work if you have activated Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) or Two-Step Verification (2SV) for your Apple ID.Here, by iCloud, I’ll actually assume that you mean iCloud Photo Library. The answer to your question depends from the devices that you have in your possession:only iOS device(s)an Apple computera Windows PC (running at least Windows 7)a Linux PCFrom an iOS deviceIf you only have an iOS device, then it’s possible to copy all your photos to either a wireless drive or a dongle that connects via the Lightning connector (the one that you use to charge the device). For more details, have a look at this question on Quora:What can I do to store pictures from my iPhone camera roll if I don't have a computer?Even if you activated “Optimise iPhone Storage”, the process of copying the photos will trigger the download of the full resolution version from iCloud. From a MacIf you have a Mac running at least OS X 10.10.3 (Yosemite), then you have two options:either export the photos from the Photos app (if you have enough internal storage space)or sign into iCloud.com and download the photos directly to an external hard driveIn both cases, you’ll need good bandwidth (10 Mbps or up) if you don’t want the process to take days. For more details (incl. if your Mac is older), have a look at this answer:Damien Schreurs's answer to How do I download all photos from iCloud to my Mac at once? From a Windows PCIf you have a PC running at least Windows 7, then you can:install the official iCloud for Windows appconfigure iCloud Photo Library on your Windows PCdownload all you photos and videostransfer them to an external drive connected to the PCFor more info about how to manage iCloud Photo Library on Windows, visit:Get help with iCloud Photo Library for your Windows PCFrom a Linux PCIf your PC is running Linux, then the only sanctioned way is via iCloud.com from a web browser. For more details, have a look at this question:Is there a way to access the iCloud from within Linux?Hope this helps!

My external hard drive is not opening, but it is showing up in my computer. How can I open it?

well i know 2 methods:try this does it work as m quite sure that i might not need to tell the second solution cosidering normally this one always work: 1.go to command prompt2.Type the folowing:attrib drive_letter:*.* /d /s -h -r -s3.Replace the word ‘drive_letter’ with your drive. For Ex mine is G drive so it will have the command : attrib G:*.* /d /s -h -r -s4.Than you hard drive/pen drive will open and show a nameless folder. Open the nameless folder.5.You will see all files/folders originally in your hard drive/ pen drive inside that nameless folder.6.Please do reply to me if it work. Cuz second method works only if u tries this and your hard drive/ pen drive does not open still.

Problem with my external harddrive...please help!?

I have a Seagate FreeAgent Go external harddrive that used to work, was stored for a while, and now is giving me problems. When I plug it into any of my USB ports, the external harddrive just continuously blinks out of the LED light holes and my Dell Latitude D530 laptop will not even recognize it anymore. I do not have a owners manual to see what the lights indicate, so I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem with the Seagate FreeAgent Go and how they resolved the issue. I was thinking I could restore it to facroty settings if my laptop would even recognize it, but it will not. Any steps to resolving this issue would be great!

Can I use my external HD with both Mac and pc at the same time without formatting?

Yes, but it depends on how you define “both.”Do you want to plug the drive into a PC some of the time, and into a Mac some of the time without formatting ?Or, do you mean access the hard drive simultaneously via both PC and Mac ?Assuming the First Option:Most people who use both a Mac and a PC run into the problem where they plug the Mac hard drive into the PC and it can’t read it.This problem is due to Windows not recognising the disk formatting type.If you format your hard drive using exFAT it will let you read and write on both a PC and Mac, steps on how to do this on a PC are here. The only hassle involved is that you need to format the drive to change it to exFAT, and formatting will wipe the drive’s contents, so make a backup of it first. If you can’t or don’t want to format the hard drive first, as an alternative option, you can use one of the tools available at Paragon Software.Paragon Software makes 2 tools that I have used extensively as a computer repairer, pick the scenario you want to solve:1) I want to use a PC to Read and write to Apple formatted HFS+ hard drives2) I want to use a Mac to read and write to PC formatted NTFS hard drivesAssuming the Second Option:To be able to access one hard drive simultaneously via both a PC and a Mac, you would be best to use a NAS (Network Attached Storage) which is a box that holds multiple hard drives, and has a network port, so you can plug it into your router, and it becomes visible on the network to other computers connected to the network. You can then read and write from any computers on the network. There are also some wireless hard drives that have WiFi built in, but this will offer the slowest transfer speed of the above solutions, and is the least reliable option so I wouldn’t use it in this scenario.

How to explore/Access/Read an external usb attached Macbook Air/Retina SSD drive?

Does anyone know how I can read this type of SSD drive? I pulled it from a MacBook Pro A1398.

Do I need a special software to access it? I HAVE ALREADY TRIED HFSEXPLORER, MACDRIVE 9, TRANSMAC.
The SSD has Mountain Lion installed on it and I need to access a file. ONE Single FILE. I'm Stumped.

Details about my dilemma: I have attached a MacBook Pro A1398 SSD to a Sata Adapter which I have connected via a USB Cable to a MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion installed. It sees the drive under Utilities. But the drive does not get mounted with Mountain Lion, even though the Finder settings for Desktop view of Hard Drives is checked. I've tried seeing the drive on multiple Windows PC's with Transmac, HFSexplorer, and MacDrive 9 installed on them ( XP to Windows 8.) All cannot read this SSD drive, although Mountain Lion, Snow Leopard see the drive in Disk Utility, and MacDrive, Transmac See it, they cannot access the contents. transmac says "no mac HFS volumes on this disk". Now isn't the volume for a MacBook Pro A1398 HFS+?
There are no options to Mount the SSD under Disk Utility on Mountain Lion.

I feel that Apple has made these SSD drives Read-Protected.

Once again, Does anyone know of a way to access the folders and files on these SSD drives?
If you know a successful way to see and copy data on this drive you are a true Mac genius.

Please Help. many thanks to anyone who can rightfully answer this dilemma with either a solution or the reason why this problem exists.
