How Can I Remove My Cat Matted Hair Shaving Is The Last Solution I Hope There Is Another One

Can I shave my cat to get rid of her matting fur?

I agree with you, that if your cat’s fur has become extensively matted, and the mats are in several places around her body, then the best and kindest solution is to have your cat shaved. But I recommend having your cat’s veterinarian do this instead of trying to do it yourself.Your cat’s veterinarian can safely give your cat a little touch of “happy gas” to calm and relax her, or even put her in a light “twilight sleep” so that being shaved will not be so upsetting, traumatic or painful for her.Your cat may wind up looking like a tiny lion if her body fur and most of her leg and tail fur are shaved close, and only her ruff around her head is left. She may feel uncomfortably chilly without her fur, so I suggest a small blanket, like a baby-blanket to put over her when she curls up to sleep, so she feels warm and comfortable and less “naked”.

How can I make my hair matted, or start matting it for future dreadlocks?

before backcombing/crocheting/ and the lesser damaging TwistNrip
natural by separating the knots as they form was the only way to grow locks,

the only thing you can (safely I won't mention wax cause if you use wax your locks don't even feel like real locks should) do to help your hair lock up is

-stop conditioning (keep washing you want clean hair not dirty, don't listen to the fools who say that garbage,)
-go to the beach/ make a sea-salt solution (this helps the hair lock up so much faster/easier
-be sure to separate so you don't get a giant mat,, unless thats what you want,
-use a residue free shampoo (Dr Bronner's is the **** or type super clean locks into Dreadlockssite.com because that cleanse is the best)

Shaving my cat during the winter?

My cat will never get outside as our house doors are always closed.
as for bathing her I do shower her every two weeks but that doesn't seem to help
im ok with the shedding but my father is the one complaining (i think he will feel better if he saw here shaved)
in my country its hard to get those things you recommended and to get a good cat food im doing my best to find the best food and currently searching to find a homemade recipe with complete nutrition

Hair Removal Cream on Cats?

Don't put any chemicals such as Nair on a cat, especially a sick cat.

Matted fur usually has to be removed in stages, rather than going to the bottom of the mat, near the skin, and trying to take the whole thing. Be very careful with any kind of scissors to remove them...a cat always seems to move suddenly and gets cut.

What we have success with where I work is one of those letter -openers that are a disk or rectangle of plastic with a slit where the razor is. There is a point to open the edge of the envelope flap, then you slide it along and the razor cuts the envelope open. (I wish I had a photo to show you.) We've had good luck using the plastic point to separate and grasp a hunk of matted hair, then using the razor to cut it free. The sharp razor edge never comes near the cat's skin but it cuts the mat easily.

Ah...here are some lettter-openers similar to the ones we use.

What can I give my cat to put her to sleep for an hour so I can shave her?

Thank you all for your concerns, I do really love my cat and would not do anything to harm her in any way. In the videos that I have seen it appears the groomer puts them to sleep before shaving them. I guess in other countries with other laws a groomer would be able to get their hands on a tranquilizer or anesthesia to be able to carefully remove the cats coat. If I would be able to find out what they use and if it is available over the counter, and if it does not hurt animals in any way then I would think about using it. I brush my cat at minimum once a week and she very rarely has a knot. But she is a stubborn cat and cries every time its done. I have the furminator and other undercoat removing brushes however the hair is still EVERYWHERE. The wife and I thought that for the summer we would attempt this procedure. We would buy a professional cat grooming electric razor that parlors use. We just know that our cat will not allow this to happen. If anyone has any useful responses, I am

I have a cat with extremely matted fur, advice on how to treat it?

I recently moved into a house with some roommates, and noticed that there was a very sweet and friendly neighborhood cat. My roommates told me that he was basically an ally cat because his previous owners had left him and he was mostly fed by the neighbors leaving out food, or him stealing from other outdoor cats.
I feel very bad for him as I live in the northwest, and it's January. He has a very thick coat, very thick fat body, and seems perfectly healthy. I would love to have him indoors, but my roommate is allergic to cats and won't allow it. I'm going to be moving into my own place soon here though, and plan to take this big boy with me. (I'm primarily the one who feeds him, plays with him, he hangs around our house). But it won't be for a month or so more.

The thing is- this guy has HUGE mats in his fur. They seriously look like they're made of solid material. They seem painful and like they're pulling on his skin. His hair is very long and thick. But, Id say like 60-70% of his body is covered in these mats. I would take him and have him shaven or something already, except that I wouldn't be able to keep him inside during that time, and I didn't want him to freeze outside.

So when I move from this house, I plan to take him, shave him and keep him inside if he likes, or outside when he likes.

MY REAL QUESTION- Is how should I go about getting rid of the mats? Do I do it myself? Do I take him to the vet and have him sedated first? Are there shampoos that work them out naturally?
I have never done this before. My main concern is to not hurt this cat.
He is such a sweet loving boy. I don't want him to think I've kidnapped him and am now torturing him.

Thank you to all who answer!
