How Can I Successfully Transition From Vegetarianism To Veganism Do You Have Any Tips

What do I need to know when I am transitioning to a vegetarian diet to be successful as a vegetarian?

I am a vegetarian from birth, I have not any kind of meat in my life. I can tell you about types of food which can be incorporated, so that you get enough protein in your diet.I have 5–8 almonds and 4 walnuts everyday. If you are not lactose intolerant, make sure to include lots of dairy in your diet. I have at least one glass of milk daily. It is good to incorporate yogurt in your diet too. Not the flavored yogurt that is packed with sugar. Have Greek yogurt or plain full fat yogurt. (I make my own yogurt at home).I usually have food that is rich in protein for lunch. I usually have quinoa, chickpeas (garbanzo beans), black beans, black eyed peas, peanuts, and lots of vegetables.I also have paneer (cottage cheese) at least once a week. You can try tofu too. (You can find paneer in any Indian grocery stores in your area). It might be difficult for you to stop having meat suddenly. So I would advice you to gradually decrease the number of times you have meat. You can start off by avoiding meat once or twice a week, and gradually increase the number of days you don’t have meat. There are plenty of vegetarian dishes that you can try if you like to cook! There are so many options! All the best :)

How to make the transition from vegan back to omnivore?

I'm not a vegan, but I think I can help anyway. Try to take some Vitamin C and Iron vitamins. They will help. Try to get some omega-3 into your diet, try this by eating sushi or walnuts. Now, slowly transition back into those foods. Try by first eating an egg, it's good for you :) Then eat some cheese. Eat a bowl of cereal and milk one day. Try just leaving out meat, and eat everything else. Eat soy burgers (they're yummy), and fish. Then when you feel ready, eat a piece of meat. See how it feels. It isn't a big deal, you can live without meat, you'll be healthier when you eat animal products. If you're really against meat, sub with fish, soy, or chick'n. Chick'n is made of chick peas, and it tastes like meat (or better). Tofu is also pretty good.

If your parents and your nutritionist say it's okay though, you can just start eating it. I think it's more that you don't really want to..or you don't want to let it go. Just slowly transition, you'll be fine :) Good luck!

Oh, if you want to gain weight as a vegan, eat french fries daily :P Not the healthiest, but yummy and full of fat.

How to be a vegetarian in a house full of meat eaters?

Get a job. Buy your own food. Cook your own food. Clean up after yourself.

If you do all those things then your family will take no issue and if your not willing to do those things then perhaps being vegetarian is not for you.

Thanks for the thumbs down guys, only further proves my point that vegetarians are a bunch of lazy bitches who just want a title.

Becoming a vegetarian?

I don't know where you heard this, but it's just a myth/rumor. I've been a vegetarian for a year now and my skin is not lighter. My friend has been a vegetarian for 3 years and she's not getting any lighter. If you want to become a vegetarian make sure you do it for the right reasons, be it for your health, for the environment, for animal rights... not to lighten your skin. If you read this and are still interested in becoming vegetarian go to www.goveg.com they have great tips and advice on what to eat if you are making the transition to becoming vegetarian. Good luck with everything.

Vegan question......?

Going vegan requires extreme commitment and discipline, howeve,r it is not impossible to live animal-free. If you have a good support system. To get you started I recommend the following websites.

www.goveg.com
www.milksucks.com
www.peta.com (here you can request a free veg. starter kit)
www.peta2.com
www.vegetariantimes.com

Visit your local Whole Foods, Sun Harvest or Wild Oats to purchase vegetarian or vegan food products. If your really serious about going vegan you can also purchase every day items that haven't been tested on animals e.g (Kiss My Face product line). Please experiment with different brands of Soymilk and meat alternative products to find what you like best (my personal favs are Odwalla Chocolate Soymilk and Quorn meat-alternative foods). If you want to learn more about vegetarian and vegan recipes Vegetarian Times Magazine has tasty recipes that my husband loves and he isn't even vegetarian. Have fun with it. I wish you the best of luck.

Can being a vegetarian cause dizziness and weakness?

Simple Answer: It sure can.

Not eating correctly can definitely cause dizziness, not only for the vegetarian, but omnivores alike. If you aren't getting the proper nutrients from your diet it can be a problem.

I'm only recommending this from experience with a friend but I'd check on how much iron you're actually getting in your foods. Had a friend who was a 'vegetarian' (basically she ate like crap, but it wasn't meat so she thought she was healthy) in highschool but ate like crap and ended up being mildly anemic due to this, used to get dizzy all the time.

A good link for some reading on iron absorption (heme vs non-heme) here: http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/iron.htm. Remember that both calcium and tannins(found in tea and coffee) can inhibit the iron absorption so if you are drinking milk/coffee/tea before a large iron rich meal, try to do it an hour or two before.

Hope that helps, if it does continue I'd also recommend talking to a Naturopath or Doctor familiar with the vegetarian diet, would be able to give some pointers and take some tests.

I am considering becoming vegan. Does anyone have any advice?

Omnivore here.Maybe I am not eligible to talk about vegan diet, but from a medical perspective (I am a pharmacist by call), I would suggest you to search for pros and cons of becoming a vegan.I wouldn’t recommend anyone in particular telling you that eating meat is excellent, or that it is rather gross. I believe that you should build a firm opinion of life style you wish to pursue. And this doesn’t apply to a diet, but for other things as well.Be critical when judging the pros and cons and make the best out of it. Don’t listen to anyone in particular, but be open to explore the possibilities by yourself, by critically judging the advantages and disadvantages of such diet.
