How Can I Treat Dark Gums

Why are my dogs gums dark red?

How long have they been red instead of pink?
As his teeth are good and he's so young, it's probably not gum disease.
Is he acting completely normal? No panting? Not at all lethargic or depressed? Not at all uncoordinated? Heavy panting, lethargy and a lack of coordination can be signs of smoke or carbon monoxide poisoning.

Press on the dog's gums with one finger. If the color returns immediately, he is probably okay. If the color returns slowly or not at all, he is in trouble. He could be experiencing bloat and must be rushed to the vet, you can lose a dog devastatingly quickly to bloat.
He could also be overheated, which you should also treat as an emergency. (If he's overheated, he might also be panting, disoriented, sluggish or vomiting.)

I think you should at least call the vet. I'm sure it's free to call, and they'll determine whether or not it's an emergency and if you need to bring him in A.S.A.P.

If he's behaving COMPLETELY normally, he probably just has dark gums.

How do you get rid of dark gums?

If you don’t have a gum infection, which you most likely would not have if you are getting a professional dental cleaning periodically, the most common recommended time interval is every six months, then the dark gums could be due to1. Natural pigmentation which is common among people whose skin color is darker than that of Caucasian’s, or has some genetic make up from those of darker skin. One may have the appearance of a caucasian but have a recessive gene or two from earlier caucasian relatives having mated with original Americans (Native) or those from countries with a population of pigmentation, but still carry a pigmented related gene which shows up in the mouth as pigmented spots on the gums. There is no treatment for this, it is just the way it is.2. And this is much more important, one could have some systemic dysfunction including cancer, which could cause the gums to darken. This needs to be diagnosed by a dentist without delay.I have many patients who tell me of an unusual area on their gums who are sure it is something new. However after reviewing my previous oral cancer screening notes, I find that what the patients are discovering for the first time has been there all along. It can be difficult for a person to know with out doubt whether or not what they are seeing in their mouth is new or has been present for a long time. This is why it is extremely important for one to get a professional diagnosis as soon as possible.
