How Common Is Hiv Among People

Why is HIV/AIDS more common in homosexual people?

@John Plum/Janet : But HIV can be transferred through fluids, too, right? Why is it easier to transfer the disease anally rather than vaginally, when semen can transfer it just as well as blood?

or is transferring it through blood, like, more... "potent"?

How common is HIV in the UK?

The chances of you catching it from penetrative sex with an infected person is about 50/50. But there is also a slim chance of catching it through oral sex, depending if either person has any small open wounds in their mouth or stomach (Where the fluids go).

It is a fact that homosexual men in the UK have the highest preveleance of HIV/AIDS, second comes heterosexual men, and third comes heterosexual women. So the odds say that you are less likely to catch it from a heterosexual person than you are to catch it from a homosexual person.

An estimated 83,000 people were living with HIV in the UK at the end of 2008, of whom more than a quarter (27%) were unaware of their infection.

In 2008, there were 7,298 new diagnoses of HIV, contributing to a cumulative total of 105,625 cases reported by the end of June 2009.

There have been 25,470 diagnoses of AIDS in the UK, and 18,787 people diagnosed with HIV have died.

83,000 people with HIV/AIDS in 2008 so thats 83,000 divided by 60,000,000 population = 0.00138 or 83 people out of every 60,000 you meet will carry HIV/AIDS.

The odds of sexual interaction with one of these 83 out of every 60,000 people is much lower than this if you are heterosexual and don't have many sexual partners. Then there is also the 50/50 odds first mentioned in actually catching it through penetrative sex. Therefore the chances are pretty slim as a heterosexual, alot of people might argue with that though.

I would still use protection if I were you, like they say at the lotto 'It could be youuuuu'

What is the most common way that people contract the HIV virus?

The most common ways through which people contract HIV virus are-Unprotected sex drive with HIV infected persons (both anal and vaginal sex). But, effectiveness of transmission of HIV infection is 1%.receptive anal sex(bottoming) has highest risk of HIV infection. One can also get HIV from insertive anal sex(topping). Male homosexuals are more prone to HIV than female homosexuals because homosexual sex among females are non penetrative.[1]Both partner can get HIV through vaginal sex.Intravenous drug injections with needles, shared among drug abusers. Effectiveness of transmission of HIV infection is 70%.Blood transfusion has a small risk of transmitting HIV, as the blood is tested for HIV before transfusion. However, the effectiveness of transmission of HIV infection is highest in this case,90–95%.From HIV infected mothers to their children. In this case, the effectiveness of transmission is about 40%. Breastfeeding has low risk of HIV infection to the baby.Thank You.Abhinaba ChakrabortyFootnotes[1] HIV / AIDS

Is HIV/AIDS more common among gay men than heterosexual men?

Gay men in some gay male communities around the world are at a higher risk of acquiring HIV than some straight people. As a world-wide phenomenon, however, the HIV epidemic is overwhelmingly an epidemic that affects straight people. An overwhelming majority of all people infected with HIV became infected because of heterosexual contact.[1]In places like Euope and North America, gay male populations historically represented the bulk of all people infected with HIV. As far as gross numbers go, however, only a very small percentage of all people worldwide infected with HIV are located in North America or Europe.[2]To put things in perspective, in most of the developed world, only about one out of every several thousand adults or more are infected with HIV, with those infections tending to be concentrated in particular, insular populations. In southern Africa, by contrast, which could be considered the epicenter of the epidemic, one out of every four or five adults is infected with HIV.Transmission in southern Africa happens overwhelmingly because of unprotected sex between men and women. Significantly more women than men have the virus.Significant numbers of babies are born infected.Gay men became particularly at risk in some places because the virus took hold in insular populations before people understood the risk.In most of those populations today, rates of new infections are dropping sharply. In some places, like the San Francisco area, for example, rates of new HIV infections among gay men are approaching zero on an annual basis. In much of the developed world these days, poverty is the biggest predictor of HIV infection, not sexual orientation.Worldwide, HIV is not more common among gay men, no.Footnotes[1] James Finn's answer to Why is HIV/Aids such a big problem in the gay community? How did so many men get infected?[2] Central Intelligence Agency

How common is HIV and how is it mostly spread?

There are about 1.2 million people in the USA that have HIV. Only 300,000 of those people are women. So with around 300 million Americans, about .3% of f Americans have HIV. Is it common to get AIDS in prison?

A lot of sex in prison is not voluntary.Prison Rape and the AIDS CrisisThere are lots of documented cases where men in prison got HIV from non-consensual sex.StephenEven when prison sex is not clearly rape, it may be motivated by either need for protection or to supply a drug addiction. The demographic makeup in prison includes a lot of folks from communities that are at high risk of HIV infection even outside prison(for example something like 40% of all new HIV infections are alcoholics a group that makes up about 8% of the general population and I expect a higher portion of prison inmates).Nobody is really bothering to collect good statistics in this whole area. I think that is a huge public health mistake.

How common is HIV in heterosexuals?

I am currently 21 and have only slept with one person in my life (vaginal intercourse only). He is my boyfriend of 3 years, and we have a monogamous relationship (he is almost 21). I did get chlamydia from him, and both of us were treated. I have been tested for chlamydia, gonnorhea, syphillis, and herpes... I am negative for all of those. I have never been tested or HIV though and am deathly terrified to. Neither of us have ever used needles, had tattoos, or be involved in high risk behaviors. He had previously had 4 other female partners before me... two virgins (he had sex with each girl only once), one girl (my friend - they had sex twice) who was tested negative for HIV, and the fourth girl has a child and I am pretty sure she does not have it. I have OCD extremely badly, and from the time I was 11 I have had a deep fear of this disease. From what I have seen online, the infection is not as prevelant in heterosexual & non IV users unless they had previously been with people who had been with homosexuals or drug users in the past. I worry all day, every day... and it is seriously effecting my life. What are my chances of having HIV? The statistics come out very low... but I am still so scared. Does anyone else feel like this? :/
