How Common Is Nerve Damage Post Vasectomy

How long should I feel discomfort after a vasectomy?

The others are generally correct. The pain should and most likely will go away. I recall being in some degree of pain for 3-4 weeks. Some recover sooner, others take longer.

There is a vocal minority of us, however, that never recovered or (in my case) developed chronic scrotal pain months or years after the vasectomy. These chronic pains are collectively put under the umbrella Post Vasectomy Pain Syndrome (PVP or PVPS) and can result from nerve entrapment, sperm granulomas, immune system responses, and/or congested epi's and vas. Many reputable hospitals such as the Cleveland Clinic are researching the causes and treatments for this condition. In fact, I was there today getting results from yet another semen analysis, and I had my vasectomy about 4 years ago.

Again, most men recover and do fine. At one month, you're still within the time-frame for a normal recovery, so don't push the panic button. Just take it easy and use some anti-inflammatories and maybe some nerve-pain agents (like lyrica or neurontin).

If you continue to experience pain 3-5 months from now, then you MUST find a PVP-conversant urologist, and most vasectomy urologists believe PVP is a myth or due to an infection, so you may have to switch.

We have PVP support group on the web that may be able to point you to a resource should you need one at........

Post Vasectomy problems?

From what I have read vasculitus can be caused by an allergic reaction. Did he have a reaction to something the doctor gave him ? Did the ER doctors say the pain was related to some sort of trauma during the vasectomy perhaps nerve damage? You do not state what the complications were that the doc ran into. I suffer chronic pain from my vasectomy 11 months ago and at its worst I can feel it in my stomach too (feels like you are going to vomit). The only pain during the procedure for me was when the numbing agent wore off and it felt like he was ripping my stomach out through my scrotum. My constant pain did not start until three months after.
There is a couple of websites run by a doctor who is pretty knowledgable on the matter he will probably chime in here to try and help you two out.
They are

I hope thing work out I know how miserable it can make life. I also suggest a new Urologist. The one who did it is never going to admit it if he made a mistake (Trust me).

Is there a reliable fix in case one gets post-vasectomy pain syndrome?

While relatively rare, this is a possible complication from vasectomy. Symptomatic relief like wearing supportive underwear or jock strap to elevate the testicles, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, and low heat or sitz baths are helpful. In some cases, chronic pain syndrome management with something like amitriptyline or imipramine to promote healing and numb the nerves works (used for three to six months straight and then tapered). Sometimes seminal vesical injections for pain relief are used. If the pain is beyond that, referral to pain management is necessary.

Lower left back pain after vasectomy?

Common causes of low back pain include lumbar strain, nerve irritation, lumbar radiculopathy, bony encroachment, and conditions of the bone and joints. Other causes of low back pain include kidney problems, pregnancy, ovary problems, and tumors. Uncommon causes of low back pain include Paget's disease of bone, bleeding or infection in the pelvis, infection of the cartilage and/or bone of the spine, aneurysm of the aorta, and shingles. Body changes after a Vasectomy?

Vasectomy affects every part of the male urogenital tract proximal to the obstruction but people are told there are no effects.

1) vasectomy can change orgasm sensation and can cause retrograde ejaculation (into the bladder) due to nerve damage during the surgery - these side effects are rare - needless to say these can affect libido

2) vasectomy can cause testicular damage - no one mentions this but it has been reported all the way back to 1985 and there are now at least six articles in the medical literature linking vasectomy to testicular fibrosis - this damage can affect testosterone levels and in this way libido

3) Vasectomy can cause chronic pain in 2 to 6% of men and this pain can decrease libido and interest in sex

If your husband has no pain and his orgasm sensation is unaffected, he should have his total and free testosterone levels checked. If his testes have been damaged by vasectomy, the levels could be low. Very few men in their 30's have low testosterone levels(<5%).

How To Reduce Chronic Pain After Vasectomy?

If this is a legitimate question, you can email me directly via yahoo answers. I have written a website on chronic pain after vasectomy and I will try to put you in touch with an Urologist that may be able to help. I recently wrote a 35 reference 3500 word review article on the topic and have reviewed over 100 articles on vasectomy complications.

Persistent pain after vasectomy is covered on my informational site for patients and physicians at:
http://www.PainAfterVasectomy.org

I am an M.D., but not an Urologist, so I suggest you read my site, and click on the links to the medical literature so you can learn about the problem.

If you have questions, feel free to contact me. I have spoken with men from all over the world (Great Britain, New Zealand, Canada, Singapore, France and the U.S.) who have PVP and run a free online support group in Yahoo Groups.

Why does my erection hurt after my vasectomy?

When you get an erection, the cremaster muscle lifts the testes towards your body (instead of them hanging low as they usually do).

The lips, nipples (sometimes nipples become erect), earlobes and genitals become fuller and more sensitive. The penis begins to fill with blood and become erect, and the scrotum starts to thicken, pulling the testicles closer to the man's body. The scrotum continues to thicken and the testes start to enlarge slightly. The right testicle will rise and slightly rotate first, then the left will do the same.

So close to vasectomy, this movement, rotation, etc. of the testes can hurt due to inflammation and pressure on sensitive tissues as healing takes weeks.

In rare cases, scar tissue forms that can pull on nerves and when an erection occurs, this can cause pain that feels as if one "has been hit" in the testicle. This is one cause of persistent post-vasectomy pain, which affects about 15% of men as far out as seven months from vasectomy. (See reference below.)

Luckily, for most men, this does not persist and 85% of men do not develop chronic pain. Unfortunately, this side effect is not widely discussed and is not routinely mentioned on the consent forms...

If the pain persists beyond four weeks, you need to go back and see the surgeon. In fact, you should call him/her tomorrow and describe your symptoms.

Still have a lot of pressure after a vasectomy?

Five days is probably too early to make any diagnosis. Most men still have pains 5 days after the surgery. I know that I did.

And, it's normal to experience pain in the pubic and lower abdomen regions. Remember that your vas deferens goes up through that area (take a look at a picture of the trail the vas goes through; it's pretty long) so it's going to feel pain since the nerves that travel along the vas have been cut.

My concern is your use of the word "pressure". This could indicate a back pressure, or congestive condition that a minority of men (myself included) suffer, but that usually takes time to develop.

At this point, I don't think you need to push the panic button. Most men (85-95%) are OK with vasectomy after the surgery. Unfortunately, some of us suffer pain that is chronic and long-term. I'm still on pain medications and ice and I had my vasectomy 4 years ago.

Now, some guy named Keine Kinder will post after me and say that I'm lying, that pain from vasectomy is a myth, and other blasphemy that he can't back up with sources.

I suggest you take a look at any of these medically-substantiated resources. Or, contact the Cleveland Clinic where they've published research on the risks of vasectomy and where I've been treated for 4 years for Post-Vasectomy Pain.

the site they gave me was kind of stupid o__o .......http://dontfixit.org/ .
I dont want to call this person a liar though, they are pretty nice, but they are against things like contraception and believe people should have kids when married and all that. and im almost 17 and told them my boyfriend was going to get a vasectomy(he's 18) and they said things like, "im happy my husband still has his man hood" & " if you love him why wouldn't you want kids with him?" so i guess they are against vasectomy's O__o , and yeah, so are these side effects true? please dont play with me and lie =P, this is pretty serious to me, & rude answers wont get best answer anyways and might be reported.

Thank You :D !
