How Did Native Americans Get Into The Casino Industry

What are the pros and cons of native american casinos in america?

I thought Americans killed all the natives, but If theres any left I would suggest to give them what they want. Its the least you can do after robbing them of their home.

Do Native Americans meaningfully profit from Indian Casinos?

Typically, yes. Of course, how beneficial it is depends on the location of the reservation/casino. If the reservation is in a sparsely populated area, away from metropolitan centers (as they usually are), the chances of the casino being large and very profitable is much slimmer. However, if a casino is popular, it helps out the tribe immensely.Unlike private casinos, the profits from Indian casinos go into the hands of the tribe and the benefits are distributed to the tribe as a whole through public programs and sometimes dividends. This is crucial to cultural preservation and cultural reproduction, as it allows them to build more schools, teach the indigenous languages, send students to college, open up museums and cultural centers, give out home loans, create jobs for the community, etc. etc. People can remain on the reservation without having to worry about being able to support themselves and their family, and without having to resort to dangerous or unsavory jobs. The oft-thrown accusation that using casinos to chase profits takes away from culture is one that assumes that poverty is a key component of indigenous culture and that Indians with money are hardly Indians at all. This is far from the truth and ignores the aspirations of indigenous people to not be stuck in poverty forever. Indian casinos allow tribes to survive and flourish despite the limited land and natural resources on reservations.

Why are Native Americans associated with casinos?

Bluntly put, they were relegated, by and large, to the poorest land in that part of the state. Frequently, the “good” arable land with water rights was taken. That ruled out agriculture. Manufacturing typically involves a lot of capital. However, many, if not most reservations are sovereign nations, and, while they may be located within a state, legally are a separate country. A little like Vatican City is a separate country from Italy. Therefore, regardless of whether the surrounding state allows gambling, they can allow it on the reservation. There are several around Spokane, Washington. You can not only gamble, but get a nice meal, stay in a first-class hotel and see the Little River Band. It pulls in a huge amount of revenue for the county. Tourists bring money, which pumps up the local economy, so it’s kind of a win-win.Think Las Vegas, but much more peaceful and family friendly. Security tends to be good.

Is tobacco the revenge of the native americans for taking their land and destroying their civilization?

No. I'll tell you why. Native people used tobacco in a sacred way. It was used only in ceremony and not for recreation.

The majority culture chooses to use tobacco in recreation. It is not the fault of the Natives that they choose to do this and neither was this example set by Native people.

I am a Native woman.

EDIT: And to correct the first user. Natives didn't smoke marijuana. We didn't even have marijuana. Marijuana orginated in China.

EDIT: How much cultural ignorance can their be?
- Casinos - Most tribes don't make enough money from casinos to support anything let alone their casino. Casinos are the attempt of Native people to live a self-sustainable life. They money from casinos goes to tribal housing programs, tribal health care programs, and sometimes to their members so they can buy food and clothing. Anything else you have heard is a lie and culturally inaccurate.
- Global Warming - Natives know how to live with nature. It is this capitalist society who cares more about making money than saving the earth that caused global warming.
- Civilization - What about Natives insn't civilized. Depections of Natives as savages etc.. are media and government perpetuated stereotypes to oppress Native people. Before colonization Native people lived without most of the problems that currently exist in this society.

Before People Speak They Really Should Get Educated!!!

Why do we never hear about Native American casino billionaires?

That is because the Native American casino billonaire tale is a myth. A common stereotype.

Let me explain:
1. Not all tribes have casinos
2. Not all tribes who have casinos make enough money to go their tribal members.
3. Not all tribes who have casnions and make money give money to their members, sometimes the money just goes to the tribe in general, like to pay for housing programs.
4. Some tribes do make enough money to give money to their enrolled members. However, most of them do not make enough for this amount to be significant. It can be anywhere from a 25$ check to a couple hundred dollars a month.
5. There are a few tribal casinos that rake in the dough. Not many, just a small amount. Usually in this case the tribe sets up a trust fund for its members. Once they turn 18 the money is available to them. It's not a billion dollars by any means or a million. Sometimes these trust funds even have stipulations, like can only be used for education or wait until older to access it. There is one tribe I know of where they allot a substantial amount of money to their members, that comes from the casino, and this is still only about 2,000 a month. That is a nice living but in no way makes them a billionaire or millionaire.
6. Remember Native people have the highest poverty rates. So this billonaire myth is just that. And tribes have expenses that their casino money pays for, that is why they have them. They pay for scholarships or tribal housing or mental health care, honorable things to offer their community.

What impact did Gus Greenbaum have on American casino lovers?

He ran the Flamingo casino for New York families a while and then later the Riviera for the Chicago Outfit. His own drug and gambling proclivities led him to steal from his bosses. That’s an unacceptable management error when working for mobsters. He and his wife “woke up” with their throats cut in their Arizona home. He was not a creative force in the gambling business in Las Vegas, merely a replacable cog in the machine. The roulette wheels continued to turn, the dice continued to roll, the skim continuted to find its way to Chicago, tourists continued to visit and try their luck. He was replaced by Ben Goffstein who eventually built the Four Queens down town which he named for his four daughters. The Four Queens is there today. The Riviera is closed and awaiting implosion and replacement by something newer and glitzier.

How much money do Native Americans get?

Depends on what they do for a living. Some might work as baristas and get maybe 10-12 bucks an hour, plus tips. Or, you might have someone that works in the legal or health care profession that makes six-figure salaries. This gap in pay is simply related to job type and industry salary standards.Oh, wait. Are you assuming Natives just “get” money? From like the government or maybe their casino revenues?Yeah, that seems to be one of the new stereotypes for Natives. Used to be we were all poor. Languishing on reservation and had some kind of sad plight. Now, some people think we “get money” handed out to us.Here’s a mantra to remember and repeat:Natives don’t get money from the government just for being Native. There are 500+ tribes in the US. Only a small percentage of tribes have per capita payments, which represents a tribal business revenue sharing system. Only a small percentage of these per capita payouts are very large. The vast majority of Native Americans do not get per capita payments.

Why do so few Europeans consider Native American Culture as American Culture?

History is written by winners. The European colonizers were winners. They did not put in their books how they came to the American continent and killed most of the population there, a few that survived they put in reservations. In history books in Europe, the European colonizers came there and civilized Native American tribes. They call it their legacy. Therefore, for them, there is nothing Native American to be considered an American culture.Other Europeans, that were not colonial powers also were colonized by European colonial powers and we also learn history written by winners. The same is applicable to Asia and other continents. There was a question on Quora What was the greatest innovation of the Chinese Song Dynasty? One of the answers by Paul Denlinger was:Industrial factories powered by water. This was the industrial revolution 700 years before it started in England. That is correct but the answer was collapsed by Downvotes (Edited: It is not collapsed anymore. Someone removed the Downvote or Quora reacted). If European colonizers cannot accept that someone had the industrial revolution before them, can you imagine how it looks like to them to consider anything of Native Americans relevant and important? We all have to lie because it is the only way for the European colonizers to be supreme in everything. If we tell the truth their carefully built world of supremacy will collapse very fast.
