How did the city of Surprise, Arizona, get its name?
Surprise was little more than a gas station and few small houses in 1938 when founder, Homer Charles Ludden, a Glendale real estate developer and state legislator, subdivided the rural square mile parcel into low-cost home sites for the area’s agricultural workers, naming it after his southeast Nebraska hometown. It was originally El Mirage 2, where those who “made good” could move up to a nicer neighborhood, according to his daughter, Katherine Lieber, and stepdaughter, Virginia Fetterer. El Mirage - where a park is named after him - was established first as a haven for the poor. “He believed everyone should have the opportunity to own a piece of land,” Fetterer said. Statler started working for Ludden in the early 1920s pumping gas, but gradually became more involved with the real estate office. It’s Statler’s name that appears on Surprise’s first subdivision plat dated April 15, 1938, and until Ludden’s family stepped forward with documentation a couple of years ago, she was credited with the founding and naming of Surprise. I’d probably try talking to the party planner first to see if they would change their mind about either the events planned or the “surprise” aspect of it. I’d explain that the person the party was for didn’t like or enjoy such and to go ahead with the party as planned could be difficult for their friendship. Basically, I’d try to give the party planner a chance to change or rethink their plan. Best case scenario is that the party planner would listen and change the event to better suit the person the party is for. Worst case well…If the party planner was set on the “perfection” of their planned surprise party, I’d have a talk with the person the party was for. I’d probably broach the subject with a hypothetical scenario and discuss what that friend felt about such. A.K.A. “How would you feel if someone wanted to throw you a surprise party like this?” And then based on the friend’s reaction/comments, advise them what was going on.Throwing a surprise party for someone who does not enjoy them is selfish of the planner. It puts the main guest in a very awkward situation of being intensely uncomfortable and unhappy, while trying to not seem ungrateful or resentful, and trying to figure out how to balance their anger/stress/unease with trying not to ruin the event for everyone else. Yeah, not nice to do to someone you call friend. And often the person who plans such, gets angry/hostile/bitter if the guest of honor isn’t just so very thankful causing more issues than the party was worth.
