How Did Waterford In Portmore Gets Its Name

How did "India" get its name? Wasn't it called Bharat?

According to WikipediaThe name India is derived from Indus, which originates from the Old Persian word Hindu.[21]The latter term stems from the Sanskrit word Sindhu, which was the historical local appellation for the Indus River.[22]The ancient Greeks referred to the Indians as Indoi(Ἰνδοί), which translates as "The people of the Indus".[23]The geographical term Bharat (Bhārat, pronounced[ˈbʱaːɾət̪]( listen)), which is recognised by the Constitution of India as an official name for the country,[24]is used by many Indian languages in its variations. It is a modernisation of the historical name Bharatavarsha, which traditionally referred to the Indian subcontinent and gained increasing currency from the mid-19th century as a native name for India.[25][26]Scholars believe it to be named after the Vedic tribe of Bhāratasin the second millennium BCE.[27]It is also traditionally associated with the rule of the legendary emperor Bharata.[28]The Hindu text Skanda Purana states that the region was named "Bharat" after Bharata Chakravartin. Gaṇarājya (literally, people's State) is the Sanskrit/Hindi term for "republic" dating back to ancient times.[29][30][31]Hindustan ([ɦɪnd̪ʊˈst̪aːn]( listen)) is a Persianname for India dating back to the 3rd century BCE. It was introduced into India by the Mughals and widely used since then. Its meaning varied, referring to a region that encompassed northern India and Pakistan or India in its entirety.[25][26][32]Currently, the name may refer to either the northern part of India or the entire country.[32]

How did they name Saturn?

The Romans knew of seven bright objects in the sky: the Sun, the Moon, and the five brightest planets. The word 'planets' comes from the Greek "planetes" which means 'wanderer' -- which fits since these bright star-like objects 'wandered' or moved through the night sky over time as they orbited the Sun. Although the ancient cultures did not see the planets as other worlds, instead interpreting them as the "lights of the Gods".So, they named these lights after their most important gods. Saturn was named after the Roman god of agriculture. According to myth, Saturn introduced agriculture to his people by teaching them how to farm the land. Saturn was also the Roman god of time and this is perhaps why the slowest (in orbit around the Sun, as far as they knew at the time) of the five bright planets was named after him. Also, in Roman mythology, Saturn was the father of Jupiter. Saturday is also named after the Roman god Saturn (Saturn's Day).

Why do we use the name India and not Bharat for our country?

People speaking English or any other European language often have a problem pronouncing eastern names. So in the past they would change names according to their convenience, and we blindly accept those.Look at us: we operate with two names, the original name Bharat, and the given name, India. The invaders of Bharat who came up to the river Sindhu somehow managed to pronounce Sindhu as Hindu, and then Indus. And finally India is stuck on us for centuries now.Historians should give a satisfactory explanation for the evolution of this name ‘India’, or trace its origin. I could not find anywhere in the Vedas, Puranas, Itihaasa or even Amarakosa the word or name ‘India.’The scriptures say “jambu dweepe Bhaarata varshe….” And from time immemorial a meaningful Samskrita ‘padham’ Bhaarat, has been in vogue: no one can deny this. Yet, our Constitution included the name India and liberally allowed everyone to use it even after attaining Independence from foreign invaders. When we speak in our regional languages or Rashtra bhasha, we proudly use the name Bharat or Bharata Matha. But while addressing the nation in English, people refer to it as India, like a translation for the original name for non-Bhaaratiyas to understand. The Hindu (newspaper)

How and when did the name "India" come into use?

India is the only country with more than two names.Yes, our country had four names:AaryavratBharatHindustanIndiaLet's start with first one.Aaryavrat refers to the time when Aarya used to live in our country. This is why  this region i.e., our country got its first name after them.Bharat named after the great king in the ancient time Bharat. He is not the one from epic Ramayana. He is later to that period.Hindustan is the name which was came in existence because this region of our country at that time is extended from sahara desert to Myanmar and from Himalayas to Indian ocean, covering the oldest and largest civilization of the world Indus Valley Civilization. As the Hinduism was the oldest religion known and is in existence in this region itself, its combination gave name to our country's third name.India, this was named because far back India was the part of African Continent and not Asia. It was the time when the whole world was in two parts. And India was in Gondwanaland. And both the parts were separated by the biggest sea ever known in the history of the world Tethys. Due to platonic changes India parted and got moved towards Tethys results to the collection of minerals and sands and stones in it at one place. This collection resulted into the formation of the youngest mountain of the world Himalayas. But as the India was the part of that continent so the name was given on that regional biased names. And the west Indies was also named due to; at that times geographical  areas, west to India. And thus named as West Indies. This is why West Indies is not counted as country. But just a group of places.British have nothing to do with any of our country's names. Simply ask you...Which was the tallest moutain in the world before Mt. Everest was discovered? Some of you will say K2, some say Kanchenjunga, Some say other names but the answer is Mt. Everest itself. Something which is not discovered doesn't means that is not existed. All names were given before British even Mughals enters to our country. Only thing is they wrote the history with their own hands as per their desires and changed the one that was prior to their rule in favor of themselves. After-all Mughals had 400 years and British had 350 years. Enough to patent and copyright anything even when hold was theirs'.I think this information is good enough for you to get your complete package on our Country's names. On History, Anything-Anytime.Thanks!

Seriously? I had to google this. I have no idea who this person is . And even after a most cursory search, I still have no idea who he is.

Vybz Kartel talks mentions "gaza" in some of his songs?

Gaza is in relation to the Gaza strip; is a coastal strip of land along the Mediterranean Sea. It's a violent place where the Israelites and Palestinians fought especially in recent 2008-2009. There is great conflict along the strip since 1948.

Okay, so gaza is just a word synomous with bad, war, violence, fighting. When he says "gaza thug".. its just the same as saying "war thug" but just using different words.

Dancehall and reggae singers often interchange words like this. I could give you another example but it'll take a lot of explaining.

What is Gaza. Jamaican?

It is \a group of musicians, producers with the leader Vybz Kartel he is a singer who sings
clarks again and also straight jeans. u can look it up on youtube the songs

Well the term was made popular because of the lyrics by Movado (or what his name is) who talks about him coming from the gully or the gaza.

Basically, the area commonly referred to as the gaza is actually Portmore in St. Catherine, and its environ. The term is locally used when referring to DelaVega as well, but its predominatly related to Portmore.
