How Do Children Learn Ethics

How do you instill ethics in your children if they don't participate in organized religion?

You can teach a lot of ethics without a religious belief system, but you will eventually run into problems. Look around at the majority of teens of this generation. They are an example of children raised without religion. When you have a void, you will find a way to fill it. Instead of religious teachings, children end up learning their values from other kids and their contemporary culture. Their culture is filled with religion, just about all of their music is about the devil. That’s pretty religious. It’s also very negative.Kids are receiving negative and violent teachings from Hollywood and video games. In some of the video games kids can make a character go and abuse a woman, just for kicks. There are a lot of images of killings, blood, and no boundaries. This generation is a very sad one. I’ve watched it happen. When I was a kid we didn’t even bring up the word suicide, because we knew it was stupid to be putting these things into other people’s brains, because they could hurt themselves. We had boundaries.Teen suicide is soaring. Do spotty mental health and addiction treatment share blame?

Can children understand the ethics of life?

The funniest thing about ethics is its subjective. What actually ethical for you may not be ethical for another person. Just like there are group of people cannibalism is normal, but in fact majority of the population thinks it as inhuman and unethical. So the question of whether children can understand the ethics of life is absurd.

At what age are children able to understand the concepts of ethics and morality?

Children have a sense of justice which is unfettered by culture or precedent. This is because they are simply too young to fully process and experience culture or precedent as each applies to ethics and morality (and justice). The childhood wound cried as "It's not fair!" is often among the first external manifestations of an understanding of the concepts of ethics and morality, but I am convinced children understand these concepts well before they can express them. They learn what we believe is 'right from wrong' differently than they learn justice concepts. I think justice concepts are innate, and ethics and morality are culturally defined, first modelled by parents, then copied by mimicking behaviors observed. As they become enculturated, children begin defining their ethics and morality according to those they witness acting in accordance with their beliefs.Speaking personally and from vivid memories of that time, when I was a child under the age of 2, I wondered why my mother was the one in the kitchen with my grandmothers and other female relatives, while the men (including my baby brother) sat in the living room and talked, watched TV or smoked pipes. Ditto the way women and men were divided in the religious rituals of a Saturday morning at dawn in schul. Even when I was a toddler, I knew about justice. I had my own ethics: I knew I was as important as any boy, and wondered why society would not let me, as a girl, be treated that way. It was and is unethical, and it is certainly immoral. Not to mention unjust. And sexist. I experienced the bias toward boys as misogyny -- when it was expressed in hateful ways, as I still do in this question: Is misogyny a greater hindrance to the progress of women in American society or is it women's pettiness and/or cattiness?

How do you explain ethics to a 10-year old?

You have a 10 year old. Their rational mind is online. They get what they would call "fair"Talk of someone stealing their homework and turning it in as their own. Someone telling a lie about them doing something they had not. Someone had used something they thought was ok, and then found out it was wrong. That they fessed-up and admitted it, even though it would cause them some kind of grief, is their morals. When a person believes the truth is more important than their own safety and comfort and that is their way of handling life, it is their ethics. When a person believes their own comfort and security are more important than being honest, that is their ethics for life. People who try to pick and choose when it is important and when it is not, always end up with the using others side. They forget practicing deceit makes them experts at lying. Everybody has to decide which side they want to live by. Do you want to be a decent and kind person or do you want to be self-serving and dishonest.Your choice becomes what kind of ethics you will have.

What is the code of ethics of early childhood education?

The answer to that has changed over time… unfortunately. ECE (here in the US) used to center on the child… their stage of development, setting up the environment to meet that need and then how they think & learn. It was all about the child.Having been in that field for close to 40 years I've seen the shift. Now it is all about the program and curriculum. So basically, when teachers get out of school it's a good bet that they know more about various programs and how to use certain curriculum then they do about how children learn. One summer I subbed at a franchise preschool and was sadly surprised at how little the schools were set up to meet the needs of the children. The classrooms were set up to meet the needs of the program… which were to impress parents when they walked in the door.Children's work and other visuals were put at adult level and higher. In fact the walls from floor to ceiling were covered… so when parents walk into the rooms, in a parents mind the look of the classrooms says that their children will be busy and their teachers attentive, instead of their child just being babysat. However, if it was a classroom set up with the child in mind, instead of a sales pitch… then it would not be over-stimulating/busy, and all work and visuals would be at child level.Another thing I noticed was how uneducated the staff was… and how much the teachers and aides followed the program more than the developmental needs of the children. Which made it apparent to me that they hired with this in mind — workers that they could mold into teachers and aides that would follow the program with no ideas that would conflict.

Why aren't Ethics taught in School?

They are in some private schools.

C'mon...you know the answer to this. We can't teach anything that helps kids be better people. That would be forcing our beliefs on them. We can't teach ethics because someone would raise hell about it and we are cowards and would give in to the loudest voice instead of doing what is right.

I need a good ethical counter arguement for Child abuse and neglect... Not sure if there is one!?

I have 2 days to finish my ethics essay paper and I need a good counter argument on Child Abuse and neglect. I am writing the paper on how it is morally wrong, and am going to try and use Kant's moral theory to support it ( not sure if that is the right theory to use). Please advise...

Where are the best places for kids to learn values, morals and ethics if not at home, in school or in religious-based organizations?

I would tend to agree.  Summer camp, sports, & boy scouts/girl scouts are other options but ultimately fall under school or religious organization.  I think given the separation of church and state in the US, public schools are limited in their ability to do so.  "Secular" character values like empathy and service can be taught and modeled in schools.* [Secular summer camps have the same limits as secular schools do.]
