How Do Geography Demography And Environment Interact

What is geography?

The study of space, place and time and the interactions between them.

I know I sound like a broken record when I answer this question, but its simple, sweet and very accurate.

How is demography related to geography?

Geography is the study of the lands, the features, the inhabitants, and the phenomena of Earth. It is, by definition, highly inter-disciplinary. It is commonly divided into 2 sub-categories: Physical and Human Geography.Demography is the statistical study of populations, including humans. It is one of the central scientific approaches within Human Geography and is applied to research across nearly every sub-discipline, including Cultural, Economic, Political,  Health and Developmental Geography.Demography is also used extensively in particular fields of Physical Geography that are impacted by humans, animals or plants. For example, in comparing the ranges of various plants or animals against long-term climactic phenomenon. Or the impacts of human demographic development on water systems (Hydrography).

What is meant by "the multidisciplinary nature of environmental studies"?

The multidisciplinary nature of Environmental Science is imbibed in its definition that it is the study of the interaction of physical, chemical and biological components of human surroundings. To put it straight any action taken by human and its effect on the surrounding and vice versa comes under the purview of Environmental Science. Lemme give an example, air pollution is a grave issue threatening the existence of life on Earth. In recent time , considering the extent of various environmental problem like Air Pollution, Water Pollution, it is clearly observed that all these problems are somehow integrally associated. For example as the air pollution is increasing, the global temperature increases which further causes the growth of blue green algae in ponds and rivers causing eutrophication. Also considering the variables that contribute to our immediate environment like humans, animals, insects, microbes, air, water, temperature, Sun, etc. etc. and their complex interactions. Many theories like Gaia hypothesis, has already proven that nothing on this planet earth is isolated. We all are somehow contribute to everything else in this biosphere. There are usually rippling effects that occur when there is a disturbance to an area’s natural environment. For example, what if there is a proposal to build a housing development in an area where there is a natural forest inhabited by many indigenous organisms.Pic Courtesy: Google.

Is geography simply the study of locations on a map?

Geography is the study of patterns and relationships between places and across space.

Geography has 3 sections:
-Human Geography
-Physical Geography
-Geomatics

Human Geography is the study of patterns and relationships between groups of people between places and across space, and the interactions between groups of people and their environments (both natural and built.) It blends together a lot of different social sciences, including economics, history, sociology, politics, environmental studies, and others. Topics may include economic development, urban planning, transportation planning, public health, demography, community development, real estate/land development, environmental management, social justice, and many many others. By understanding the geographies of our societies, we can try to improve the quality of life of everyone involved (economically, socially).

Physical Geography is about natural processes across the surface of the earth, and relationships between environments or between humans and the environment. Subjects include meteorology, climatology, geology, hydrology, oceanography, etc.

Geomatics is a sub-discipline that deals with how Geographers obtain and use information. It includes cartography (map making), GIS (interactive digital maps for displaying data and making models), remote sensing (gathering data from a distance--satellite imagine, airplane imaging, radar, lidar, etc.), and surveying (using instruments and GPS to take measurements of the land).

What is the nature and scope of geography?

Geography offers several career options with numerous specializations.Cartography - Geographers who specialize in this sub-category of geography make maps, charts, globes, and models Survey - Geographers can specialize in surveying, either by joining the Survey of India or state survey departments or private organizations. Surveyors map the surface of the earth through mathematical observations and field work. This is one of many geography jobs in India.Urban and Regional Planning - The specialization is concerned with planning, housing, and development projects with respect to their location and utilization of available land-space. There are degree courses available in this stream.Town Planning - Town planners are employed by public and private organizations engaged in urban planning and design and by NGOS involved in rural development projects. Many universities offer diploma courses in the specialized field of town planning.Remote Sensing - Studies of quickly changing phenomena such as floods, draught and forest fires, etc. Remote sensing satellites provide a variety of information about the earth's surfaceClimate Change Analysis - As a professional in this field, geographers are required to analyse scientific data and conduct research concerning climate and climate change and make prediction regarding the future of Earth's climate and weather.Top Universities in IndiaSASTRA University, ThanjavurAndhra University College of Engineering, VisakhapatnamLovely Professional University, PunjabChrist University, CochinUniversity of Science and Technology, KochiAnna University, ChennaiUniversity of Allahabad, AllahabadBharath Engineering CollegeGood luck

What is the relationship between sociology and geography?

Sociology is the study of human society, as implied by the name. Geography is the study of the land, and can be loosely classified as physical and cultural. Human society, through hundreds of thousands of years of development, has impacted the Earth in many ways, and this applies to both physical and cultural geography. Cultural geography itself is inherently related to sociology, as cultural geography focuses on how humans live on land and how cultures and groups of people live, whether separated or close together. This in many ways depends on sociology and how people and societies build up, as these people and societies will have a large cultural impact both within and outside their societies. Cultural geography studies how these culture differences impact the movements and scattering of peoples. Sociology studies why and how these types of social structures form in the first place, and this knowledge can effectively predict what cultural geographers study in future. Sociology can also affect physical geography, as knowledge of how cultures and societies form and the way humans interact socially can explain how and why humans have altered the landscape. Studying human society can explain and predict how humans will migrate, function, and alter the earth, which is also the study of geographers.

What is the relationship between history and geography?

History and Geography are very closely related.Geography is an areal science that deals with lands, oceans, atmosphere, people, cultures and earth phenomena, with reference to space and time.History is the study of past with the help of written documents. Many Historical events have geographical linkages.Geographical factors have had impacts on history.e.g. the Himalayas have always acted as a natural barrier for the Indian Subcontinent, thereby developing a distinctculture & history for the region. The only (relatively)easy land route for entering the Indian Subcontinent in the past was the Khyber Pass, hence most invasions in the region had been from that direction only, changing the history of the whole Subcontinent. Foe establishing their colonies in the interior of Africa, the European explorers used the rivers as a mode of penetration into the interior,e.g River Congo.Every historical event has taken place in/at a geographical location.Hence many historical events have been titled after the associated geographical locations.e.g.the Treaty of Versailles, the Normandy invasion, the Iraq war etc. While studying Geography, especially Human Geography,we need to refer to past periods every now and then,to understand temporal changes, for comparisons between past & present situations, changing interactions between human societies and nature over a time period, changes in physical factors/conditions like climate, river course, erosional activities etc. This is where History comes into picture. Many historical documents provide us insight/information about past flooding events, droughts during ancient times,& past climates.Map is an important tool for studying not only Geography, but also History.Expansion and contraction of past empires, limits of ancient civilizations, routes of past human migrations, studies of battles and wars and so many other historical events & phenomena can be best understood using maps.

How does geography help historians understand World History?

In order to answer your question, you must first understand the divisions of geography. 1.) Physical Geography- physical geography is the study of land and physical features such as mountains, oceans, etc.. 2.) Political Geography- political geography is the study of countries and nations and their borders compared to their location as well as what resources they have to use. 3.) Demographics- demography is the study of population and trends. 4.) Culture- culture is the study of the people themselves; it is a detailed study of the influence on people. 5.) Terrestrial Geography- terrestrial geography is the least used of all the fields; this is the study of Earth and the other planets in our solar system.

When studying world history, it is important to ask questions such as: "Where is this? Why did this happen? What could've happened instead?" To answer these, you HAVE to understand a little of the different fields of geography. Geography allows us to learn more about ourselves!
