How Do Great Music Sources Get Their Music

Free background music source?

I found a site last year with some really nice original instrumental compositions (mostly guitar) but can't remember what it was.

We have a few million visitors to our site every year - we're not going to create an overnight sensation but any artist we use will get their name in front of a few people.

What is a good source for music news?

For news I always start with Pitchfork. 80% of the music news I am interested in I will find there first and it's a great aggregator of most of the other sources I check and will occasionally alert me to a blog I hadn't heard of before. Plus, they don’t just run with the press release stuff. Their news is often written with a great sense of humour, something sadly lacking from their reviews. They are quite weak in some areas though, such as non-US artists. However, Twitter is steadily taking over as my most useful resource. I follow very few artists directly (too much noise), but a combination of blogs, promoters, record labels, music writers, venues, and well connected fans gives me the jump on most of the other sources. If I'm obsessive about an artist I will join a fan run mailing list, these often fail to live up to expectation but I have two that I have been subscribed to for 10 and 15 years respectively. Artist / label run lists are generally less likely to be good, but there are exceptions.Facebook is good for certain artists but there is something about it that encourages artists to over-post, with quality info often getting lost amidst the chaff.

What is a good source of great music tracks?

Apple MusicApple Music is a music streaming service, developed by Apple Inc. Users select music to stream to their device on-demand, or they can listen to existing, curated playlists. The service also includes the Internet radio station Beats 1, led by DJ Zane Lowe, that broadcasts live to over 100 countries 24 hours a day, and the blog platform Connect, that allows artists to share their posts, photos, videos, and tracks with subscribers. Apple Music provides music recommendations based on a user's taste, and the iOS application is integrated with Siri voice commands. The service was announced on June 8, 2015, and launched on June 30, in over 100 countries worldwide. New subscribers get a 3-month free trial, before the service becomes paid-only.Apple Music faces direct competition from other, similar music streaming services, including Spotify, Tidal, Google Play Music and YouTube Red. Apple Music has managed to distance itself from other services with exclusive content, integration with Siri voice commands, and high-profile advertising. Apple Music is designed to create vendor lock-in though network effects, and DRM encumbered downloads, occasionally deleting original music from a user's hard drive and replacing it with DRM encumbered versions. In April 2016, Apple Music exceeded 13 million subscribers.

What does music mean to you?

Music is my life. It is my form of love. If I didn't have it, I wouldn't be the person I am. Music makes the world go around. Its rhythm is our heart beat, its harmony the people who surround us. The melody is the gospel of our lives.
Music is what lets us grow from a tiny seedling to a towering tree. It alone waters our roots, and feeds us new soil.
Without music, our world would wither, and us with it.
Music is life.

(I'm not doing this for the points, ok?)

What is the best way to source new independent music?

Well, the first thing you need to do is define your taste. That can be a certain sound, a set of artists in different styles. Then, figure if there's anything consistent about them. The typical ways this happens is:1) Labels: Long-lasting recording labels survive because they develop a brand associated with sound. That brand be a very specific sound in a specific genre or a commitment to something such as experimenting in sound. I try anything released by Warp Records, Planet Mu, Ninja Tune, Ostgut Ton, Kompakt, Tri Angle, et al. because I know they have released quality music over a long period of time and have committed to certain sounds that I like.2) Publications: whether it's blogs, websites, or magazines, publications tend to specaliaze in certain areas. The chances of one or a few covering parts or all of your taste is high. I follow FactMag not for their reviews, but because their mixes are always from promising new artists.3) Retailers: you have to take them with a grain of salt because they are trying to sell you stuff, but retailers tend to focus on certain sounds as well. I follow Boomkat and Bleep's new releases to stay up-to-date.Labels:WarpPlanet Mu RecordsNinja TuneBerghain BerlinKompaktTRI▼ANGLEPublications:FACT magazinePitchforkRetailers:Your independent music specialistBleep — Your Source for Independent Music

What are some good sources for music to use in short films?

Another great source, if your project is not-for-profit is http://www.mobygratis.com/film-m.... It is a free service provided by the artist Moby and aside from a few glitches works very well. The process is very simple, you create a free account, sort through their database of music, choose the song or songs you would like and then explain what your project is to them and a few other bits of information. After around 48 hours they will send you an email with a private link to the downloads. I believe they give you .aiff or .wav files to download and they also encourage you to provide them with a link to your film or project when it is complete, which can help add to the exposure of your film. One thing to keep in mind during the process is that they only provide one download and I have in the past had an issue where the download hung and I could not get the file. Regardless it is well worth the price (free), for quality music.

Is there a good open-source alternative to Cakewalk Music Creator?

There's a few of them. You might need to use more than one to get all the functionality you need.
